I have sat in the middle of the 2nd row, so i had a very good view on the stage. there have been many dutchmen and englishmen in the audience. first, steve poltz entered the stage for about 45 minutes or so. he was pretty good, some songs were really fabulous. he told some stories and it was pretty funny. then, finally, it was time for JEWEL, herself. the lights in the hall went out, so the only light came from the big screen behind the stage. JEWEL alone entered the stage and began to sing, without any illumination, so you could only see her silhouette. 'near you always' was the opener. after that the band came and they played songs like 'deep water', 'hands', 'barcelona' or 'donīt'. then JEWEL made a little acoustic part with songs like 'morning song' and some others. 'you were meant for me' was an absolute highlight, she sang it together with steve poltz. after that the band came on the stage, again. 'everything breaks' and 'hole in my heart' were two songs from her 'rare angel'-tapes. of course she sang her hits, like foolish games, who will save your soul, jupiter, what simple is true, life uncommon or kiss the flame. she interpreted every song differently from her studio-album. some (like 'who will...') were very fast and loud, others (like 'donīt') very quiet and slow. sometimes jewel seemed cold and inaccessible, but then she seemed vulnerable like a little child. JEWEL improvised even during the songs, she changed the melody, she changed the lyrics sometimes. so it was a unique gig. the audience listened devoutly and piously. sometimes the atmosphere reminded me of a religious act. some people cried during the concert, because it was so wonderful and special. jewel wanted the audience to stand up and to come nearer to the stage. i jumped over the first row seats and so i stood in the front row. i could have touched her, i was so near. the next three songs were brand new, one was called 'love me or leave me alone'. all three were very fast, up-tempo songs. they really rocked! then jewel and the band left the stage, but soon JEWEL came back to perform the final two songs of the evening: 'absence of fear' and 'angel standing by'. the atmosphere created during these two songs was very very special. my flesh began to creep, it was a private and intimate moment. the lights were turned off and JEWEL was like an angel standing over me. i am so thankful for this experience, it was so marvelous and wonderful. i will never forget these two hours of joy. after the concert we waited 1.5 hours behind the stage to get an autograph and................we got it!!! jewel came, with a black leather jacket and a black hat on her head, and she gave many many autographs. she talked to some fans and asked them where they got the pictures from. then steve poltz came out and a girl asked him to kiss her. he gave her a shallow kiss on the cheek. then he asked her: 'do you want a real kiss? a REAL kiss?' of course the girl said yes and so he kissed her for a minute or so. it was a deep kiss. the girl could not talk after that. steve signed my picture as well. 15 minutes later, (jewel signed EVERY picture and poster), she entered the coach and she took a slice of pizza. god bless her!!! is there anyone who has been in hamburg too? maybe you could email me privately. bye michael ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 16:11:12 EDT From: StarSky26@aol.com Subject: * How many.....? Thanx! stacy* the star gazing angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 23:44:04 +0000 From: "Richard Mee" Subject: * Jewel Concert Review (better late than never!) Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry, UK. 10 May 1999. After the dizzy heights of London's Royal Albert Hall, Jewel could have been forgiven for delivering a low key show in the more modest surroundings of Warwick Arts Centre. Instead, she treated the sell-out audience (of which I was privileged to be a part) to the kind of performance that would have graced any stage anywhere in the world. This was a phenomenal gig. Jewel truly has star quality, and no-one who was at this concert would deny that she fully deserves all of her success - and more. Poltzie opened the show with a set that started quietly but ended with the audience yelling out demented Wookie impersonations as though their lives depended on it. Assisted at various times by most of Jewel's band (but not, sadly, by Jewel herself), Steve won over an initially sceptical crowd with some fine songs. It was the ABC song which really cracked it for him, and the Star War song was the icing on the cake. I only hope that George Lucas never gets to hear it, or there could be some serious litigation. Go Chewie go! Jewel took to the stage alone, guitar in hand, and kicked things off with a classic rendition of Near You Always, before being joined by the rest of the band for a run through the opening songs from 'Spirit'. The only real gripe I have about the entire show was that the essential beauty of the songs was sometimes drowned out by the full-on, amplified band sound. Fine musicians all of them (especially Doug Pettibone and the brilliant but slightly insane drummer), but their playing could be a little intrusive, detracting from the impact of the heartfelt lyrics. For the mid-section of the concert, the band departed to leave Jewel back in coffee-house mode: a girl, a guitar, and a voice that no words of mine could do justice to. The range, the power, and the sheer versatility of her singing are quite incredible, and have to be experienced to be believed. 'Satellite' and 'Kiss the Flame' particularly stand out from this part of the show, as of course does the Cold song (which Jewel cheekily described as 'very intellectual, very deep'). The remainder of the show, performed with the band back on stage, was a stunning collection of the old, the new, and the very new. Jewel's performance seemed to lift with every song, and it was clear that she was enjoying herself (as were the rest of the band - although the drummer, who had lost his shirt somewhere along the line, was determined not to let it show). Towards the end, Jewel ordered the audience to their feet, before launching into what she later described as her 'experimental rock phase' with 'Down' and 'Do You Want to Play', (both a bit Sheryl Crow-ish but excellent live songs nevertheless) and rounding off the main set with a stirring version of WWSYS, during which she drove Doug Pettibone to break a guitar string in a brave but ultimately futile attempt to match her vocal gymnastics. Encores which included a tear-jerking 'Angel Standing By' and a rousing 'Chime Bells' left an exhausted audience still pleading for more. There's not much else that I can say, except to urge all of you who have the opportunity to go and see Jewel live. Even if you don't like Spirit. Even if you don't like the idea of her playing with a band. Even if you don't like the way she does her hair. Life's too short to miss out on an experience like this. Richard. This is what I found on the web about Rusted Root (who is opening for Jewel on many of her North American tour stops this summer). Formed in Pittsburgh in 1990, Rusted Root is known for its infectious harmonies and blasting energy. Their collection of music is known as aggressive, acoustic, body moving and magical in its intensity and power. The band's first single "Send Me On My Way" continues to be a staple on both MTV and radio stations across the country. Their debut album When I Woke was recently certified as gold and has sold more than 635,000 copies to date. Rusted Root is said to be part of a new breed of musicians who are accumulating legions of fans through their engaging live performances and roots-based music. Massive crowds of people have followed the band throughout the eastern United States and as far west as Oregon, to listen, dance and celebrate. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 22:01:14 EDT From: Zaria2@aol.com Subject: * Re: rusted root/Jewel Before I realized Rusted Root was touring with Jewel I had heard their music, but I wasn't too familar with them. Those who have copies of the "Innerchange Days" tape will remember Jewel singing backup for Joy on "Where Have You Gone, Jimmy Dean", a JEH staple. Anyhow, Joy was sufficiently happy with the response she got on last summer's LRT tour through the Midwest, to book another show in Indianapolis for Thursday, May 20. It's at the Music Box Cafe on Indy's northeast side. Write to me or to Duff (JustDuff@aol.com) if you need directions. Write me if you need a place to crash overnight. :-) Start time is 8pm; $4 cover, and the address is 4213 E 62nd Street. Phone (317) 290-4327 if you're close but can't find the place. :-) Hope to see an EDA or three there this week! - -- | Greg Dunn | And all you touch and all you see | | gregdunn@indy.net | Is all your life will ever be. | | The Sultan of Slack(tm) | Pink Floyd | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 23:22:28 -0400 From: "Kevin B. Pease" Subject: * NJC: Re: rusted root/Jewel Hi all, Here's what little I know (and highly subjective comments) about Rusted Root: they had minor "commercial" success a couple years ago (maybe 95, 96?) with a song called "Send Me On My Way", you may have heard the song. I never heard anything else from them on the radio, though... I did buy a couple of their earlier CD's (an EP, "Cruel Sun", and "When I Woke" (which Send Me On My Way is off of), and they're actually quite enjoyable... they released an album maybe a year ago, which I forget the name of, that didn't do a whole lot for me. I've never seen them live, so I can't attest to what type of live show they put on. I'm not quite sure how I'd describe their music, but I like the earlier stuff much better, it's just a lot more fun to listen to, in my opinion. There's a lot of interesting instrumentation, lots of layering of drums & "nonstandard" instruments, and a lot of it is uptempo stuff... vocally, they're also pretty good. As I said, I've never seen them live, but I would actually be very interested in seeing what sort of show they put on, because I do enjoy their older music, and their newer stuff would probably grow on me, if I listened to it more, but it struck me as a much more bland and unexciting than their earlier stuff. I don't know that I'd recommend rushing right out and buying the album, because I think it would be something that not everybody's going to like... but if you know somebody who has the CD, definitely borrow it... if you've heard one song and liked it, maybe you'd want to pick up the CD... That's about all the input I can give about them... maybe someone else can supply some more facts & opinions...
