Yeh, that's what I always thought... well, not really conceited, but definitely aware that she could talk circles around anyone and perhaps a little too eager to prove it... often getting sidetracked into some tangent when asked a simple question... often the same tangent would keep popping up for a few weeks, until it was replaced... ^_^ > come July I'm sure. In a message dated 99-04-29 01:08:50 EDT, you write: << he word >> Hi, I'm a very big fan of Jewel and really have enjoyed reading this list everday for the last few months. I've never posted before, but I'm always quite impressed with how nice the people are, so maybe a few of you will see it in your hearts to help me in this instance. First, can anyone please tell me around how much tickets at the Garden State Arts Center will be going for? Unfortunately, I'm working all day Saturday and I can't find this out for myself. I'd really like to go, but I feel that quite possibly the only left over seats might not be too great. I guess what I'm asking is if I try to buy tickets Saturday night, can I expect to still get really good seats? The second question is whether or not anyone could possibly make me a copy of Unplugged, and of her videos from POY? Thirdly, I'm also interested in getting some Angelfood, but I just don't know where to turn! If anyone can help me in any way, I'd be greatful, so please write me back! Thank you. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 17:16:00 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: Royal Albert Hall previews The following are three brief previews of Jewel's Royal Albert Hall concert, next Wednesday, which I found in some London listings magazines. - -------------------------------------- Evening Standard - Hot Tickets 29 April 1999 The Alaskan goddess, who was brought up in a shoebox in the middle of the tundra, reflects all the great songs on Pieces Of You and Spirit and may even recite a bit of verse from her collection, A Night Without Armor, which is the biggest-selling poetry book ever! If you like the sight of grown men dissolving into gooey puddles then get ye down to the Gore. Time Out - April 28 Still yet to emulate her mega success Stateside, this is Kilcher's first London show with a full band. Alaskan raised Kilcher is possessed of a wonderful talent, only let down by a tendency for worthy self-celebration. Following up her ten million selling debut, her second album, 'Spirit' (Atlantic), more than consolidated her earlier promise. It is a work of rare depth and spiritual assurance, infusing the melodic grace of early Joni Mitchell with the spunky ire of Liz Phair. What's On In London - April 28 They say that beauty is exemplified by slight imperfection. This is quite true. Take Jewel, an absolutely ravishing American beauty with teeth that have clearly never visited a dentist. Okay, so she's not quite Shane MacGowan in the dental department, but her crooked pearly whites offset her otherwise faultless face to the extent that everyone notices. Perhaps it's contributed to her fortune? Jewel has sold over ten million albums of insipid acoustic poetry, and, after something resembling a backwards brainwave, she's also published a book of insipid poetry, without the acoustics, which has now sold two million. She is, therefore, America's First Lady of letters, but she's hardly a communicator in the way Tori Amos is, and neither is she zeitgeisty like Alanis is - or at least was. No, essentially Jewel sings vaguely pretty songs in a very pretty way. So of course there's an audience for her. (See you there, then. Front row.) - -------------------------------------- Chris. I just found the following at the UK dotmusic web site www.dotmusic.com - -------------------------------- Stars gather for Net Aid charity concert Sir Harvey Goldsmith, organiser of 1985's Live Aid charity concert has announced plans to stage another major event this year which will simultaneously take place in London, Geneva and New York. Both Sting and Celine Dion have already been approached to play at the event. This year the twist will be the fact that the live event will be globally accessible via the Internet as well as the expected live television transmission. The event will consequently be called Net Aid and supports the United Nations' plan to eradicate world poverty by 2006, the UN Development Programme. Other artists reported to be considering involvement include U2, Lauryn Hill, Jewel and John Mellencamp. - ------------------------------ Chris. I would love to hear what everyone thinks > about her CD "Spirit" and how it compares and contrasts to "Pieces of You." In a nutshell, I think that Spirit is less of an album of actual music and more like a fundraiser. I never would have listened to Jewel if all of her music sounded like this record. With the production the way it is, I never would have noticed that she's a brilliant songwriter... POY is amazing. Spirit is kinda dull (okay it has its moments). I WANT... I would classify her as a folk/rock/country star, > but NEVER a pop star! I can't even think of one of her songs that > could be called a pop song! What does everyone else think? A lot of people simply use "pop" in its original context - an abbreviation of "popular". She's a prominent figure in pop culture. "Pop" doesn't really mean Spice Girls... > 2) I've noticed that Jewel has a song called "Enter From The East", > and Poltzie has one called "Look To The East", and I was wondering > what the significance of this direction is. Or is it just a > coincidence? The East is, traditionally, mystical... there are lots of reasons. The major religious traditions come from the ("middle") East, that's one... also, the orient is traditionally considered very mysterious and exotic, because many things about the culture are/were so different. Muslims in Europe and North America have to face east when they pray, because that's the direction of the Kabah (that's what it's called right?), the big cloth building in Mecca that they just have to face when they pray for some reason. I don't know about steve's song, but Enter From The East sounds a little like traditional Chinese music to me, and it's possible that there's some correlation there. talkin' all that jazz... ^_^ > End of jewel-digest V4 #226 > *************************** .end.transmission. | Jesse Dangerously | .10.04.good.buddy. | without justice | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 07:31:15 -0400 From: Courtney M Gordon Subject: rock stars Dear Angels, hi! I think that if Jewel wants to act like a rock/pop/contemporary (who cares) star, then fine. Because if you look at it, she is. I mean, no you can't be rock pop and contemporary at the same time (I don't think) but if she wants to act like the rest of them do, i think it would be fine. (for me anyway) As long as she was doing it just because that was how she felt at the time, not so she would appeal to this group or that group. i certainly hope she doesn't feel that she should have to watch her tongue and act a certain way just to make everyone else happy. love and luck always Courtney the EvE 6 angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 17:47:04 -0400 From: "Willms, Gregory J." Subject: RE: over analyzing I think it's only fair to critique Jewel on her bad points as well as the good ones. Be objective. I'm not saying that if you hear one bad performance you should burn her CD's, but what I AM saying is that if she has a bad performance, be enough of a person to admit it. It doesn't make much sense to me to be happy with a bad performance or album just because it's Jewel. That's why I always want to hear at least part of an album before I buy it, regardless of how much I loved the last one. I'm not going to listen to an album or performance and pretend that I like it just because of who it is. But I usually give them the benefit of the doubt and say, "well, it was just a bad night." Especially if I've seen them perform before. I guess the point is that it's not fair to analyze one way and not the other. This is a list for expressing opinions (among other things), and if negative thoughts on some things can't be expressed... well, what's the point? - -----Original Message----- From: yael snir [mailto:yael_snir@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, April 29, 1999 7:02 AM To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Re: over analyzing YOU GO GIRL!
