So basically it looks as though there will be alot more Jewel exposure on UK television.....about time too ! I kept expecting to have the band come out of the shadows, but it was just her. Overall, I liked her performance. She cut the song a little, she didn't do the part "I take a trip, I catch a train, etc." she kind of just ended it, but it still sounded nice. I was unable to watch Leno the other night so I can't compare the two. But, this performance of the show was very calm and even slowed down a bit. Enough rambling :) Kirsten "the freckled angel" <<>> *Studies in Love #12 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 11:35:48 EDT From: RowdiusEDA@aol.com Subject: over analyzing EDAs My last post was to prove a point. We do tend to over analize what Jewel does as David wrote... I just wanted to make a statement about it.. MacPhee" Subject: Regis & Kathie Lee Hey there! Well, I've just finished watching Jewel this morning, and I must say, IMHO, that it was an improvement- in all areas from Leno. Clothes- Jewel looked her natural self. Interview- she wasn't as "snobby"as she was on Monday, covering all aspects- the tour, her books, and "Ride With the Devil"(although, I thought that the interview could have been a little longer. But not being a regular viewer of this program, I don't know how long these things normally last). Song Performance- BEAUTIFUL! A simple acoustic version of DSL. She even singled out "Boo boo bee doo yeah" which was a wise choice for this performance. Good show, Jewel! As for her saying "Thank you, well I'm in Limbo on this one. after the song ended, I did see her open her mouth, but no sound- either she whispered, or she was just plain ol' opening her mouth. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 23:51:41 +0800 From: "Jeffrey Jerrold Chua" Subject: Jewel is MTV Asia's Artist Of The Month Hey people, this hasn't been posted yet, and I couldn't do it on Monday because my computer was down, but Jewel will be MTV Asia's Artist Of The Month for May, so for those of you who have Cable, you'll get a whole month of Jewel! == Jeffrey Jerrold Chua | http://Jewel.OnTheWeb.Nu Page me with Urgent in subject or http://PageJeffrey.OnTheWeb.Nu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 11:19:56 EDT From: Tlcathome@aol.com Subject: NJC: A friend encouraging her friends to rope plywood cows...... Hi, my name is Tammy Campbell, and I rope plywood cows - and mailboxes, and kids, and friends, and husband, and........ I tried, oh how I tried to avoid the calling of that south park lookin' cow, but it musta been those eyes - they beckoned me and I almost made it - until Dennis said come on, you gotta try it! I did not expect to like it that much - I was hooked almost immediately - And my neighbors thought I was weird before - lol - they musta been ready to call someone to get me when they saw that! Between the plywood cow roping and the wharped game of cards over the weekend, I think it's safe to say that we are the strangest bunch of people you could ever expect to come across in your lifetime ;-) Everyone managed to scarf down Tammy's Salty Tacos and Sunday morning's waffles and eggs flew out of the kitchen, and everyone seems to have survived them, so never say you go hungry at an EDA gathering :-) The beach cleanup was great - It was nice to see the difference between when we arrived and when we left - with more garbage bags, we could have made an even bigger impact. It amazes me what little respect people have for the beaches - to think that if they would just take care of the beach to begin with, these cleanup efforts would not be needed. But until that time comes, count on us to do our part!! Thanks to everyone who made it out for the cleanup - it was great to get together again!! It seems about half and half on having the EDAdventure memorial weekend, so let me know if the first weekend of June is better for everyone!! Well, I didn't see the Leno show, but I'll pass on what my Little Ol' Granny once told me -- Folks see you kick a little dog once, they think you always kick dogs! :-) So, Jewel is a rock star now, huh? I thought so. Well, no big surprise there as Sean Hooks told us this would happen at least ten years ago!!! That's it, man, game over. We're done, stick a fork in us... I imagine Jewel wore those darn rainbow suspenders on the show and sure that was a "lollipop" in her mouth, not a cigarette and Delores of the Cranberries and the Freelance Dentist Ninjas were outside waiting to kick Jewel's butt and set her straight, until her spiritual sidekick Marilyn Manson jumped to her rescue! Insofar as I can see, Jewel has a sarcastic streak in her. Let it be. Let the girl be flippant in an interview. And if you think she's all nice and politically correct, then they've switched Jewels along the way, because she sure wasn't before. Listen to the older concert songs, they make POY and Spirit look very, very tame. She used profanity, anger and sarcasm -- and all used appropriately, in my opinion. Much of what we now see is pure marketing. It's also someone playing around with their performance because they can. Let Jewel insert a hundred boo-boop-i-doos in DSL next time! We already have a very CLEAN SOUNDING studio version with just one boo-boop-i-doo, and the Spirit CD will always be available should you wear out your current copy of it. Getting the "same thing" every time is for MacDonald's, NOT art! We Americans are far too hung up on mass-produced cookie cutter entertainment. In art, variety is good, the same thing every time is BORING. You know what's really sad about the humor/sarcasm thing? Every time Jewel says something tongue-in-cheek that falls outside of her marketing image, she now has to turn to the crowd, and say "it's a JOKE, get it?". As time goes on, it will get much worse. And some fans are so anal that they actually have the nerve to get angry with the artist for INTERPRETING THEIR OWN MUSIC IN A NEW WAY! *sheesh* (Not to say that an off performance isn't an off performance. But sometimes, an off performance shows us something interesting and valuable as well.) Then there is the issue of perception of what everyone remembers was said and how it was said. Good luck on that one. :-) People only hear what they want to hear. No more, no less. Try having to put a disclaimer on the punch line of every joke you tell, or explaining HOW the magic trick works BEFORE you do the trick. Sometimes people just need to chill out, quit analyzing their arses off and simply enjoy the ride! Oh, and please let me know when Jewel kicks that little dog on national TV again, okay? But I suspect she'll rope it next time! ;-) Dennis (A big dog guy with a little dog boot) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 11:35:44 EDT From: RowdiusEDA@aol.com Subject: NJC:Re: Stardom & Overanalysing EDAs eikkert@hotmail.com (David Trinh) wrote: Every move Jewel makes is analyzed with an endless list of mails saying "Is she becoming this or that". I had been a dedicated "fan" (for lack of a better word) until late one night I first saw the FG video... I got suspicious then, but out of fear I did not relate what I saw to any other EDA on the list (or to anyone else for that matter!) As the days turned to weeks and the weeks into months I began spot more clues.. (mostly little slips here, little indiscretions there) My pile of evidence has slowly grown from a suspicious thought to a pile of notes the size of Mt Everest... If any of you other EDAs have noticed these things too, then you must share in my fear of what might happen.. but enough of this prelude... the other night on Leno I got the break I've been looking for.. I broke the Code!! What I am about to tell you may seal my fate, so please remember, I love you all..... Here is the fact: JEWEL IS REALLY THE ADVANCE SCOUT OF AN EVIL RACE OF SHAPE CHANGING ALIENS!!!! Don't laugh. It is true, and here is part of the evidence: First of all The Foolish games video, remember how "she" kept raising her hands in the air? After many hours of study I came to realize that this is a signal to the comrades in space.. And also, how she stood face to face with herself and waved? We all thought it just FX tricks, but really it was another scout in the same shape... They thought the best cover for their meeting would be a music video.... That is just one of many things I have spotted... Once I email the list about these things, but I just assumed that Mike thought I was crazy and shot the post down, but now in hind-sight I fear THEY intercepted it... Why? Shortly after that I received a jewelMerch catalogue in the mail, yet I have NEVER sent any EDA or JEWEL rep my address.. So how did they know where to send it? THEY are watching me!!! Without us knowing it, THEY are controlling our lives!!! In their evil plot to take over the world they need willing host bodies, but first they must break down our defenses.. Which is why we find ourselves do these weird things.. (roping plywood animals, staying up all hours, just to catch a five min clip of Jewel, etc..) Anyway, while the rest of ya'll were watching Leno and thinking "what IS she doing?" I was breaking the code.... There was a reason Jewel was on HDTV... the waves are more clear, and allow her minions in space to receive the message better.... All of those 'id-do-di-do's" you heard her "scream" were part of the code.. and the message is grim... the invason is to begin on the last night of Woodstock... As Jewel finishes her set the end will be near... And as EveryDay Angels, we are most susceptible to the mind bending force, since we have been subject to the 'brain-waves" most... Soon EDA will stand for EveryDay Aliens....... OK, there's been alot of talk about Jewel's performance on Leno. I personally agree with he who said that perhaps Jewel is trying new things with her songs, to try and keep them interesting to perform, since she sings them each about 100 times a week. I know that alot of times I also get disappointed when you see one of your favorite artists perform, and you dream of seeing them perform it just like on the CD becasue you love that version. But when you think about it, the CD sounds the same every time you listen to it, no matter what!! Isn't it even a little bit interesting to see it done a different way, a one-time chance to see her creativity?? After all, from what I've read, some people really liked it, even though there are many who didn't. I saw Sheryl Crow in Oakland, CA on Apri 13th. Sheryl is also a female musician that I love. She plays great rock music on her CDs, and I love it. When I saw her live for the first time a couple weeks ago, I felt like I was at a Dixie Chicks concert. Everything she played sounded so country!! Not that I'm knocking country music, I like some of it, but I had hoped to hear Sheryl Crow at her best, playing good old rock 'n roll, even if it WASN'T exactly like on the CD. I still enjoyed myself somewhat, but was a little disappointed. Of course I am still a big fan though. One other thing.... What is up with Jewel's attitude lately? There have been a few things I've read in posts the last few days that have really upset me. I will admit I didn't see the Leno show Monday night, but I heard that she was really snobby, going around saying "I'm a rock star now!" That makes me so angry, because that is not the Jewel I have always loved, so humble and thankful for her success. I also read that post about the British magazine interview she did a little while ago, where the author pointed out that she seemed "jaded", and Jewel got upset and told him he'd better rewind his tape and listen to her again because she is SO not jaded. It sure seems to me like she is, which is somewhat understandable considering she "hasn't had a day off in 5 years", and knowing that people are out there 24 hours a day talking about you, writing about you, and analyzing and critquing your precious creations can be very nerve-wracking! Did anyone read what Jewel said about the EDAs in her interview with the EDA on MTV's FANatic? Although she has always seemed to like us, she admitted in that interview that fans like us scare her sometimes, and she was never this fanatic about her favorite musicians before she became famous. I can understand how we might make her nervous--we talk to each other about her 24 hours a day, people whom she doesn't know from Adam!! We discuss her looks, her attitude, her music, appearances, EVERYTHING. Wouldn't it make you nervous if you knew there were over 200 websites devoted to every little thing about your life and career, and the songs and poetry you write about your most intimate feelings, spilled out for everyone to read and analyze? Wouldn't you be nervous to know there was a group like us, who talk about you non-stop? Be it that we do all say nice and admiring things about her, still, I'm sure its intimidating. All I mean is I can see how Jewel WOULD be jaded about everything that is happening in her life and career, and she shouldn't be angry or afraid to admit it. I think it would help people identify with her more, especially her fans, instead of acting out this way, bragging about "being a rock star" now. Perhaps she is angry that people only ever want to hear things the way they are on the CD, no one seems to be interested in her true self and creativity, only wanting her to act like a "typical rock star", and she is not like that, so she is sort of "rebelling" against the stereotypical image everyone has picked out for her, or assuming her to be. Of course I still love her and always will. I also have to say I was SO DISAPPOINTED to hear about the HGH concert, where she say "F-you" to an EDA!! I will admit, I can see how she may have found that guy obnoxious, she was trying to say a sincere thank you to Vogue for putting on such a great benefit for her organization, and he was interupting her, but STILL!! He was obviously an EDA, and she should remember that his very presence there was ALSO supporting her charity. I think to say such an insulting thing to someone who obviously loves her and admires her work and charity is so hurtful and mean. Of course I still love Jewel, but I am worried to see the change in her personality. I hope maybe she was just having a "bad couple of days", and maybe when her tour is over she will feel better. It would be really sad to think that the very fact that so many people love her, and albeit perhaps even worship her, could get her so very "down" and (maybe) even jaded. Thank you all for reading my feelings and thoughts (I know this was long!). Remember that I don't mean to sound like I am putting her down too much, just expressing some thoughts. Who knows, I could have things all completely wrong. Love With All My Heart, Your Fellow Angel, Jennifer McBride ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #225 ***************************
