Everyone should be as lucky as I am to have such friends. :-) - ------------------------------------------------- EDAdventures: The So Cal EDAs Take Beverly Hills Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip. That started from this ex-Bennigans, aboard this bright red truck. The mate was an avid Jewel fan, the skipper preferred Steve Poltz. Five passengers set sail that day for a two hour show. A two hour show. The concert started getting rough, the tiny group was thrilled. If not for the absence of Vogue invitees, we'd be sitting far above. We'd be sitting far above. The gathering set down on this well-charted Denny's. With Gilligan (Lori), the Skipper (Tony) too. The millionaire (Jason) and his wife (Sonja). The movie star (Jerome). The professor (Ryan) and Maryann (Jamie). Here on So Cal EDAventures! Greetings Angels! Yes indeed, we all set out to see Jewel at the Henry Fonda Theater (by far the smallest I've seen since high school) in Beverly Hills, California. And like all good gatherings in the Los Angeles area, there was a celebrity sighting, awesome music, and a theft. So without further adieu (or butchering of TV theme songs), here is an account of the events of Sunday, April 25th. Many of you don't know, but our So Cal EDA list members like to employ coercion in order to bring up attendance numbers at gatherings. So Jamie convinced Tony to go and Tony in turn coerced me into going. But even I am not sorry to have gone. Sure, we had an hour to kill in between getting our tickets from will call and being let inside the theatre. Sure, Jamie saw Jeff Goldblum in every black SUV after catching a glimpse of him in one earlier that day. Sure my purse got stolen during the show and I've spent an entire Monday replacing and cancelling. But it was still an awesome show and living with regrets sucks. :-) Setlist? Setlist? Yes, there is one that Jason and I agreed upon: 1. Near You Always 2. Deep Water (much quicker than the album version) 3. What's Simple Is True 4. Hands ("If I could tell the world just one thing, it's that I'm not a real blonde....") Whale Watching story (not a song, but a very long anecdote that seems to grow by the day....) 5. You Were Meant For Me (during which Steve pecked her on the cheek as they were singing the chorus on the same microphone) 6. Innocence Maintained 7. Gray Matter (is that the actual song title or just a repeated phrase in the song? Anyone know?) 8. Barcelona (cool light effect that changed to bright lights over Jewel on the word "fly" in the chorus) 9. Foolish Games (I will always love this song) 10. Down So Long (even funkier than on the video) At this point we were asked to move up to the stage. We spent the rest of the set so close to Jewel that Tony almost touched her toes. Only fear of the goddess stopped him. :-) 11. Down (I had only ever heard this song once before - wow was it awesome live) 12. Love Me Leave Me Alone (If all the critics who call her naïve could see her now....) 13. Who Will Save Your Soul (Extended Kitty version - no, I can't really explain. It went on forever and she kept saying "When the kitty gets hungry, he says meow, meow (beat) meow." Yes, it was still awesome.) 14. Angel Standing By (enough to give you chills) I'd never seen Jewel live before. Wow. You hear other people talk about it for pages and pages (as I am now doing) but you just won't get it until you're there. Sure, she forgets lyrics and improvises. Sure, she misses a few cues. No one is perfect. And the fact that she's not makes her all the more wonderful. What is the moral of this paragraph? Go see Jewel live when she gets to your town. Heck, go see her more than once. We So Cal EDAs are probably going to both the Irvine Meadows and San Diego concerts. :-) We ended the evening by first waiting outside for Jewel to leave the building. It was a long wait and then after a few cars with dark windows went by, Jewel escaped with Nedra in a non-tinted SUV. But she waved and I think there were pictures. Just for contrast, a few minutes later Steve Poltz walked out with his girlfriend (Anya, I think is her name). He just sauntered out there, signed something for Jamie and wandered off down the street. That guy is just kooky. We then went to the traditional Denny's. And it took the traditional wait time of forever to get our food. Then of course there was the mix up with the checks. It took three people to figure it out. Oh well, the mozzarella sticks were good.... Anyway, that was when Speed Racer (Tony) and I headed back for home, having carpooled to the event. However, we did run out of gas a few miles from my house (my keys were in the stolen purse) and had to call AAA. But at that point, we just sat there waiting. One disaster too many. :-) All in all it was a heck of a lot of fun. (I'm sure more than is legal in California) Just goes to show you never know what you'll get from an EDA gathering. :-) As a quick note, I'm going to be scanning pictures from the Magic Mountain gathering and putting them on our website soon. I'll let you know as soon as they are posted. And So Cal EDAs if you want a copy of the tape we recorded, let me know (you can have one if you aren't from So Cal, but I figure you probably don't much care about our incoherent ramblings). Lori Email: larthur@fullerton.edu P.S. As a consolation to me, when I went to take my picture for my new driver's license the DMV lady told me it was a good picture. Imagine that. Is that even legal?? Quotes: "F-you. I don't even know you." Jewel to a guy in the audience who told her to thank him during her speech thanking Vogue, etc. "I'm really hyper tonight. Must be all that coke...acola." Jewel to audience as she is bouncing all over the stage. "What do you mean you're in row C? I hate you." Jamie to Tony all night after she found out that he had a third row seat because he only ordered one ticket. "So does this mean that at our next gathering I'm supposed to wear that shirt?" Me to Jamie when she showed up in the same Jewel shirt that I wore to Magic Mountain. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 01:40:15 EDT From: RowdiusEDA@aol.com Subject: DSL tonight EDAs Well, I survived my little jaunt down to Houston, and the only way I am going back there, is if I have to miss the Dallas Jewel concert, and must venture to Houston.... I got home from the Leno taping a while ago. I thought Jewel did an ok job with Down So Long, except she changed it around a little too much. But, she looked pretty good. And Steve was playing the guitar, i swear, that guy has so much energy. As we were leaving the show i saw him walking by so I shouted "STEVE" and he turned around and waved, and i told him good job. I shoulda gotten an autograph (even though i have his already) or asked him to get Jewel to sign something for me. Oh well. It was fun going anyways. :) oh yea, i didnt see any EDA's there. Were you guys wearing your t-shirts? I'm Sensitive (live) 4. You Were Meant For Me (live) 5. Foolish Games (radio edit) by the way, for those Statesiders who have no idea what an EP is, it stands for Extended Play as opposed to LP which is Long Play... these days it's basically just a CD that's longer than a single but shorter than an album, generally with around about 5-8 tracks and about 30 mins playing time, although it varies quite a bit... for those of us who remember the days of LP's, the vinyl equivilent used to be the same size as an LP but ran at 45rpm instead of 33... in the 80's they were used quite a bit so they could fit like extended remixes of songs and stuff which they couldn't with just the standard 45 single... geez, I really am showing my age!!! *LOL* Kim Lees Your New Zealand Angel Standing By ICQ# 9270797 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ check out Kim's JEWEL Shrine... http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stadium/7485/jewel.html includes a sounds section of over 100 Real Audio files - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: 27 Apr 99 17:05:08 MET DST From: Katrin Reil Subject: just a question I just wanted to ask, if anybody on this list knows something about European (or maybe even German) media appereances, articles etc. of Jewel Please don't send me the tourdates, I got them already... This is my story for a major school assignment I am making a documentary on Jewel but I am lacking interviews with her and I was hoping that someone out there would be nice enough to make me a copy of anything they have whether it be of TV or Radio it would really help. Anything at all you know her singing or talking anything would help me so much. I am more then willing to pay for the tapes' cost and postage if you can help me please please please let me know. Also anything with Steve on it would help to. Thanks for taking the time to read this and my thanks to anyone who is able to help it means more then I'll ever be able to explain Thank you Ross ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 10:30:57 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: What song was that? > Anyway i just wanted to know how some of you thought she sounded cause i > dont like how she basically changed the whole song. Just a thought - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------- What song did she sing? I never heard that one before. It sounded like a blend of several actually. Ok, so I'm being sarcastic...but you have to admit, that was a little extreme...even for Jewel. That's the worst I've ever heard her "perform" that song before. She didn't even say "thank you" at the end like she usually would. Sounded like she almost tore her throat up at the end...that was way too high of a note for her. There's a point where singing turns to yelling, that was yelling. Then for the interview part, she seemed more stuck up than ever...Jewel needs to get off her pedestal and realize she's not going to be "at the top" very long if she keeps being this way. Of course I guess I should be encouraging her, cause then it'll be all that much sooner when I get to see her back in the small clubs. Even Jay didn't seem all that enthused to talk with her. I think he even picked up on her "star" attitude. She wasn't even funny. Whether she was playing around or not, it didn't come across that way. She needs a reality check. I know some artists change up songs a bit when they sing live, but to butcher a song the way she did last night is uncalled for. Simply the worst TV performance she's ever done. I wonder if she'll do that on Regis tomorrow too. Hopefully not, since she usually doesn't have the whole band with her on that show.
