Today's Subjects: ----------------- Jewel HGH Concert [Phillip Jacques ] Jewel TV apperances this week, including tonight :-) [Mike Connell Subject: Jewel HGH Concert I am usually just a lurker here on the list. I've been a member since around the time Spirit was released. I have always been a fan of Jewel, but I really got into her with this new album. After that, I got some of her unreleased stuff and must say that most of it's better than what she has put out there so far. Anyway, enough about me. :) The reason I am coming out of seclusion is that I just got back from Jewel's Higher Ground For Humanity Benefit concert at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, and I must say that it's true - the only way to experience Jewel is live. This was my first time seeing Jewel in concert, and it blew me away. I can't wait to go to the other concerts she does in the area. Jewel and Steve had a great energy going between them on stage, and Jewel's voice was just unbelieveable. I saw one person with an EDA shirt on and I was anxious to try and meet Alan Bershaw, but he never told me what he looked like. All he told me was that he would look like an "east-coaster." Well, that didn't help much. :) Anyway, the night started with the publisher of Vogue magazine giving a short speech, since this was the second of the third HGH concerts they are putting on for Jewel (with the first being the one in Aspen). Then Nedra came out and played a short video on HGH and their mission and goals. Then the main event kicked off as Jewel came out. Here is the setlist, as best as I can remember it. I never wrote anything down. This is straight from memory, so I am sure there are some errors, but hey, I'm human. :) Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple Is True Hands (Where Jewel sang, "If I could tell the world just one thing, it's that I'm not a natural blonde." It was hilarious) She then told the Mexico drug bust story You Were Meant For Me Innocence Maintained Barcelona Grey Matter Foolish Games (best version I've ever heard. I could have sword she was crying at the end. Heart wrenching.) Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Down So Long Who Will Save Your Soul (great scat section at the end where she started singing and one of the guitarists would mimic her voice on his guitar. She also started singing "When the kitty is hungry, it goes meow, meow, meow." Funny.) That was it. I can definitely say that it is a night I will never forget, and that I am anxiously awaiting her future LA performances. Sorry for rambling so much, but I am a print journalism major and I'm excited. :) Later. She will have some competition because several NJ EDA's look to be heading up to Woodstock instead ... Here's are some things to remember about ticket sales this Saturday: 1. Jewel did not sell out the PNC in 97 until a few weeks before the show, and the venue is 5,000 seats bigger now. I've got a good feeling this time around might be the same ... no promises, but I wouldn't worry about getting tickets after Saturday. 2. As NJ EDAs know, the PNC basically puts the whole summer series on sale at once. I am willing to bet that Jewel will not be the most popular act this year, meaning that if you got an wrist band you'll probably get at some fairly good seats. (and although they will be selling Lilith Tixs the same day, just thank your lucky stars that Aug. 28th Alanis/Tori tickets aren't being announced yet!!! I mean how broke does the PNC want to make us :-) 3. Get as many of your friends to get wristbands to leverage your odds. I believe the restriction is still six tickets per show ... more than enough to try the buddy system with three or four of your friends. 4. Try to carefully peel off your wristband and go back to get more ... is it cheating ... heck ya, but all is fair in love and prime Jewel seats!!!! 5. Although I prefer to buy my tickets the old fashion way, I know people who have had good luck with both the web purchase and phone purchase. More than once, I've seen someone while standing in line get tickets faster by calling on their cell phone. 6. Plan on being in line at the ticket agency for two - three hours. Especially at the PNC (which IMHO has the slowest agents and lines, you're better off at a ticket master agent). Good luck to everyone this Saturday!!!! And we hope to see you there! -- Rob ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 20:21:15 +0000 From: ro196179@att.net Subject: NJC: EDAs AOL IM names Hello Fellow EDAs! I decided not to dwell on losing Ryan, and being mad at Jewel, and my tape stopping half way through Foolish Games, and Lori losing her purse...I'm cool with it...really. =)**** FIRST OF ALL! I'd like to send lots of love to my EDA of the week-Adrian DuPlessis (I hope I spelled it right...). This man is the sweetest and most hopeful person I've ever met. All through the day, Adrienne was always, "Well, if it's up to Jewel...she'll definitely do it,!" and he was always up for everything...=) At the end of the show, Jewel threw the pick she was playing with in front of her. When she walked away, Adrian dove onto the stage and got the pick...then gave it to me. AWWWWWWW! SO yeah..I love you, Adrienne, and thanks again SO MUCH. SECONDLY! Close call for EDA of the Week goes to Larry Greenfield who convinced me to spend the day with him, even though at first I didn't care to too much...and then was nice enough to have a few connections. =) ON TO THE REVIEW! (This is gonna be long, and it's a review of the whole day...so if you don't wanna read it...shoo fly....) My personal internal alarm woke me up at 7 am (it always wakes me up really early when I'm excited...and whenever I try to go back to sleep, it just wakes me up again), so I just walked around the house killing time until 10:30, at which time Ryan took off for L.A. (I live in Oxnard, by Ventura for all those who care, and don't know). We got to Pink's at noon...and couldn't find anyone who may have resembled EDAs...and were too embarrased to ask...so we just kinda roamed around Pink's for about 10 minutes. Then we started talking about it out front, and this guy turns around and asks if we're going to the show tonight, too (YEA!!! WE FOUND AN EDA... FINALLY!). SO then we look for Larry as Ryan and Jerome (the EDA we found...lol...I talk like he's mine. I found him!) order hot dogs, then I walk over to the table and Larry's there and Adrian's in line getting food. Cool...5 EDAs accounted for. SO they all eat, and we all talk about Italy, and New Orleans, and Jewel show...and every other cool place Adrian's been, =) with a few acceptions of us adding in stuff. Then we head over to the theatre (around 1 pm). We kinda wait outside for about 20 minutes, and then Larry finally comes out and tells us that the soundcheck's at 3, and we might be able to get in. Sooo..Larry goes home, and Adrian, Jerome, Ryan, and I cruise the boulevard (hehehe). We now know where every photocopy place in Hollywood is, we know that there are 3 Desi Arnaz stars and 3 Lucy ones...but nowhere near each other, and we know that Star Wars fans have A LOT of computers. Then we went back to the Theatre and waited for another 20 minutes out front, for Jewel to decide if she wants people there...then decided to try our luck out back. Then after about 5 minutes, "Kelly" comes out and tells us that we can come sit it, but we gotta leave directly afterwards. So we stay for the soundcheck which was really cool cuz we got to see everyone hug each other and stuff. And Jewel and Steve did a 3 minute hug like they hadn't seen each other in years, and he kissed her. The drummer kept making fun of Steve's big ole cowboy hat, and everyone was laughing and energetic...and it was just really cool. Jewel, at one point, flashed Steve, with his girlfriend in the audience (Steve's girlfriend was really nice, by the way). The setlist was as follows: (Jewel by herself) - -Deep Water - -Last Dance Rodeo (with band) - -Barcelona - -Down *this cool little improv song she was making up* - -Hands (twice) In the middle of it, I waved to Steve and he waved back, then I waved to Jewel, and we accomplished the fact that she hates me. She was wearing this really cute little outfit (that she later changed out of)...a red tank top with a nice leather maroon jacket over it. SO yeah, that was great...it was 4:30, so we left and Larry went home again and Adrian went with him this time, and we went to meet Lori and Tony at Virgin records cuz we were late. We got there and had to tell them all about it...so then we all decided to go to Rosco's to eat (at Jerome's suggestion), and on the way back to park by the theatre, I saw Jeff Goldblum! He was pulling out of a parking lot, and his window was rolled down, and it was so clearly him...and he was just right there, with a lot of facial hair that seemed to be going gray...but he looked great, and the fact that he was in a black explorer was the butt of a lot of jokes that day. SO yeah, we went back and parked in the free spot we'd been at all day, then walked down to Rosco's which had a 45 minute wait...so we were all Screw that...and we went to Togo's. Then we walked back to the theatre around 6 to get our tickets from the willcall office, and oddly enough because Ryan and I were 2 people and everyone else was just q, they got seats on the floor and we got them on the balcony...and they got them the day after us. I told Tony about the concert the next day and he got C row (!??!), but all's good =) SO there we meet up with John and his friend, and we decide to go hang out at Starbucks till the concert starts. STUPID STUPID JAMIE...was listening to Last Dance Rodeo from the sound check on her recorder, when she stopped it in Starbucks, and STUPIDLY recorded over a tiny part of it with "Do you have a problem with that Lori?" "Slut" and it only cuts out a few words but still...=( SO then we go back to the theatre and wait in line to get in, and we see Gerritt and Mike, and Adrian and Larry, and Cindy Lee Berryhill and MrBB... and JEN!!!, and everyone else. While inside...that Diane lady from Ally Mcbeal and 8 Heads and a Duffel Bag walked next to us, and we were all hey! Vogue! I felt very out of place with my little Jewel shirt and khaki pants, but oh well. SO we go upstairs to see our seats and don't really like them..so we go try to get some downstairs. Adrian somehow managed to get another ticket front row center...buttface. =) WE play dodge seat for a while and finally get settled...and Jason and Sonja show up...so the concert was great, here's the setlist: - -Near You Always (first verse accepella...the most beautiful version I've ever heard of this song) - -Deep Water (with Steve on guitar) - -What's Simple Is True (with Steve on guitar) - -Hands - -You Were Meant For Me (in which Jewel kissed Steve while singing with her...so cute =) and a 10 minute long pot story) - -Innocence Maintained (acoustic and Jewel's guitar was out of tune...ewwww!) - -Grey Matter (beautiful...but she still hasn't tuned the guitar!) - -Barcelona (there's one note that she holds THROUGH the second let me fly in the chorus in this song...how the hell does she do that???) - -Foolish Games (unimpressed...one of the worst versions I've heard of it...) - -Down So Long (the BEST version ever) (then Jewel asked us to come forward, and somehow Tony, Jason, Sonja, Adrian, and I all managed to get in this small huddle at the front of the stage, right under her) - -Down - -Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone - -Who Will Save Your Soul (WONDERFUL *sigh*) *encore* - -Angel Standing By And that was it...one encore, but still..no opening act either..I guess it's cuz it's a benefit thing for Vogue. I was still great. So after the concert, we hung around out back for about a half hour trying to meet her, but moreso for me...trying to meet Steve. SO then they come out and jump in the red van, and Jewel kinda hides in the back while Nedra's in the front waving like crazy. =) SO then everyone leaves, and Jason, Jason, Sonja, Tony, Ryan, Lori, and I all decide to go to Denny's again...then I turn around for a second...and I'm like (really calmly) "hey Steve...thanks for posing for me on stage!" And he's all, "That was you? That was fun!" Then I asked him to sign my higher ground booklet (well, one of em anyways), then I start to talk to him about New Orleans and he says "Yea! That was fun!" and I tell his girlfriend she has a really cool shirt, and she thanks me, and so does Steve..and then Tony says "Hey!" (You see...as Tony pointed out several times in the day...once upon a time, he sat with Steve in his hotel room in his boxers and got drunk with him. He even peed with him, so Tony's cool...and I just want to know why they were in their boxer shorts, and why they were peeing together) and Steve's all "I remember you! That was fun!" Then he walked across the street and got in a black explorer (Jeff?) that pulled out 5 minutes before along with Jewel and them peeps. He walked out after they left. That was so sweet of him. SO yeah...then we went to Denny's and rounded off a lovely night with EDA chats and reminiscents. Until next time, Jamie *the everyotherday angel* ~When the kitty gets hungry, he goes meow, meow, meow...when the kitty gets hungry, he wants to go to bed...when the kitty gets needy, it goes meow, meow, meow~ Jewel Kilcher =) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #219 ***************************
