[Rhino ] Jewel on Jay Leno on 26th (anyone else going?) [BudGoddess@aol.com] NJC: So Cal EDAdventures: Episode I (long email) ["Arthur, Lori" Subject: Scrap book??? WHY?? Hey peeps, I have to say I agree whole-heartedly with what Dennis Harris said about the gift giving. Jewel doesn't want socks. :) Couldn't have said it better myself. :) But honestly, I can't see why anyone should spend so much time making a scrap book for her. Will she really care? I mean, when it all gets down to the nitty gritty, will she give a flying rat's patootie? I think not. She'll probably open it up (unless she automatically sends everything to charity, which she probably does), take a look, maybe smile for a minute and say, "Wow, I'm such an inspiration!!" and then throw it in the recycle bin, or, if she's on tour, she'll flush it down the lavatory on the plane. Not to say Jewel's ungrateful, cause I don't personally know her, but if I got a scrapbook for MY birthday, filled with pictures of EDAs helping old ladies across the street, I would probably go "ok...." and then use it as a fire-starter. So maybe I'm insensitive, but at least I look at the BIG picture here. Besides, by sending a "gift" like that (she already said no, and a gift IS a gift, whether its a book or not), it says, "Hey, aren't we wonderful Jewel? Look at what we did just so we could take a picture of it and send it to you! You should really pay more attention to us cause we're so neat!". That would make my eyes roll for sure. So maybe I'm a cynic. So rob me and take all my food. But I'm still right! Are any other EDAs going to be there that night? I am so excited! I see Jay Leno a couple times a month and have NEVER seen Jewel yet! Yeah! :o-) ~Angela~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 21:12:51 -0700 From: "Arthur, Lori" Subject: NJC: So Cal EDAdventures: Episode I (long email) A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.... So Cal EDAdventures: Episode I: The Magic Mountain Experience Jason Vierling and his band of thrill-seeking EDAs envisioned a day of wholesome fun at the amusement park known as Magic Mountain in Northern California. Jason planned for weeks and posted many times the necessary information. And there was much rejoicing. Meanwhile, "Princess" Lori was busy helping to arrange carpools and meeting places. She badgered and she made executive decisions. It was decided that some would meet at Bennigans restaurant in Fullerton at 8am (so early!) and others would join up later at the Marie Callendars outside the park. And there was much rejoicing. ** Little did the thrill-seeking EDAs know what Fate had in store for them: defunct restaurants, syrup mishaps, eerie realizations about chalk, head contusions, special appearances by superheroes, and a certain event to be later called the Riddler's Revenge coincidence.... Cast of Characters (in alphabetical order) Andy (Jason's non-EDA brother) Jamie (the EDA with the jeans you can write on) Jason (the Rebel leader of this expedition) Lauren (Sonja's non-EDA sister) Lori (Me) Robert (Andy's non-EDA friend) Ryan (supposed former EDA infatuated with Jamie) Sonja (Wonder Woman EDA) Tony (the Backstreet Boy EDA) The day of April 10th began with everyone waking up at an absurdly early hour to make it to their respective meeting places on time. One obstacle was the last minute realization that Bennigans restaurant no longer existed. However, the distinctive building was still there and everyone was accounted for by 8:15am. Then we were off! Save one incident of a police officer (believed to be under the influence of an illegal substance at the time) weaving his vehicle across traffic lanes causing a sizeable jam, the drive there was quick and painless (about 45 minutes). We found the afore mentioned Marie Callendars and proceeded in. Breakfast buffets all around except for two rebels (Lauren and myself) that decided to perilously order off the menu. Worth mentioning at this point are two Kodak moments. The first occurred at the buffet with Jason (aka Syrup Boy) attempting to place the serving spoon back into the syrup dish. He did...only it sank to the bottom of the dish. Rather than reporting the accident or attempting to aid the poor spoon, Jason used the "hit and run" method. However, thanks to his ingenuity, the clever staff placed a ladle in the syrup. The other incident occurred in the restroom (and away from our personal observation) and was related to us by the "cute as a button" Sonja. Apparently, Marie Callendars has acquired a new sympathy for the restroom goer and placed chalkboards and chalk in the stalls. So Sonja, happy as a clam, starts writing all over it ("EDAs Rule" and the like). Then, she suddenly has a realization about WHERE that chalk has been and the myriad of germs that must have successful colonies on that piece of chalk. Fear not, reader. She spent a good while with soap and hot water and we spent a good long while laughing. :-) After inciting chaos at Marie Callendars, meeting up with Jamie and Ryan (who drove from Oxnard on their own), and deciding on seating arrangements, we headed for the entrance to Magic Mountain at around 10:30/10:45am. When Tony, Jamie, Ryan, and I (who had been carpooling together) reached the main entrance, we looked around for the others but to no avail. We finally went inside the park and were just about to page them over the loudspeaker ("Attention, will all Everyday Angels please report to guest relations.") when Sonja found us. Turns out that the others were not allowed through the metal detectors, due to various metallic objects in their possession (a pocketknife, a chain-link belt, etc.). So they had to return to the car and come back. By the time we had gathered ourselves together, it was nearing noon. We headed to Viper which had an unusually long line. At this time, I will mention that Saturday must have been the summer preview in terms of temperature. It felt like it was at least 90 degrees out and all of us were in jeans. But despite the heat and the long line, Viper was the perfect kick-off to our trip. And for those of you who are interested, we will be offering an exclusive bootleg of a certain someone singing "Diamonds are a girl's best friend." :-) Let me esplain the rest of the day. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. (That's for you, Jason) ® I know there are those of you who are dying to know what other rides we went on, so let me satisfy your curiosity. Riddler's Revenge: Really long line, but worth the wait; Batman: worth the wait every single time; A carnival-type spinning ride: very relaxing; Ninja: a "pretty" ride, but far too short; Colossus: line to ride backward was far too long, so we settled for the wild ride forward; Free Fall: overcoming great obstacles such as sheer terror, Jason and I survived the drop exhilarated. After Free Fall, it was almost 10pm (closing), so we headed for the exit with weary feet. ® So you want more anecdotes? We got anecdotes for you! We broke for a quick snack/lunch before Batman. While getting our snacks, several people bought kooky foam superhero masks. So for the rest of the day, we had the sporadic company of the Green Lantern (Jason), the Flash (Andy), and Wonder Woman (Sonja and Jamie). Sure, people looked at us funny. But we're pretty funny-looking anyway.... ® And what, you may be asking, is the Riddler's Revenge coincidence? We passed the enormous line for Riddler's Revenge on our way to Free Fall (which is now in the middle of the track for Riddler's Revenge) and a little while later noticed that the Riddler's Revenge was stuck at the top of the main incline (right before the initial drop). There was a full load of people up there and maybe it was the mental exhaustion or maybe it was the throbs of pain emanating from our feet, but we found this immensely entertaining. The thought of having the people in line who had waited for over an hour who were now going to be sent away and the people on the actual ride who were stuck in the freezing cold was just too funny. It was at least a half hour to 45 minutes later that we noticed the frozen occupants being led down the sky-high stairs. We started clapping and cheering, which incited the other people in the line to look up and start cheering loudly as well. We did spend a good deal of time looking for a place to eat (and get enough caffeine to drive home) after we managed to get out of the park. And just in case you should be in the area again, there is NO Denny's in the immediate vicinity of Magic Mountain, despite what any park employee tells you. Nor is there a Coco's there, despite the weary hallucinations of anyone in your group. :-) The Denny's is three exits down on Lyons Ave. We had a truly wonderful time marauding around Magic Mountain. And I met some of the strangest, craziest, sweetest, and funniest people on the planet. And I guess the EDAs were kinda cool too. :-) Look for the further EDAdventures of the So Cal EDAs. We may possibly be marauding at the Renaissance Faire soon.
