If you go to the Forum Shops in Ceasar's Palace there is a shop in there called "Antiquities". At the front enterance there is a book with a bunch of autographed photos of celebs. One of those is Jewel. It is selling for $120. In it she is in a purplish shirt, sunglasses, and is playing Big Blue (it's a live picture taken from some concert). The second item you will find if you walk up the steps to the second level and look at the wall towards the enterance. There you will find a guitar autographed by Jewel and mounted on a lovely display with a picture of her. This one will set you back $3,000. Both items are just awesome loooking. Would've got them myself but well you know...Vegas. Anyway if anyone happens to be there and has about $3,500 to spend pick them up and lemme know. Good luck. You'll never believe what happened to me today! Steve Poltz came at played at my Uni (Sydney University)! I couldn't believe it! I was just walking around campus and I saw these posters that said: "Who Is Steve Poltz?" I went up and read one, and it said he was doing a free live show at 1pm! I had classes then, but "Screw them!" I said. I waited around 30 minutes before he was supposed to go on, and he was just doing a soundcheck and walking around. I was really excited, and then he's on and the first song he sings is one from his album, Good Morning (Waking Up With You) I think. Then he sings 10 Chances, Beautiful Day, Treehuggers, a cover of TLC's Waterfalls, The ABCs Of Love (as requested by someone in the small audience), and then I yell out "The Star Wars song!!" He goes "What?" and I shout it again. He tells everything to do the Chewy noises and says "If no one else does the Chewbacca sounds, me and this guy (points to me!) are gonna look pretty stupid!" That's his final song and afterwards, he tells me that he had forgotten about that song! A few people go up to talk to him and I get my CD signed. I had asked him how come he didn't sing the Chair song that I had heard about, and he said he was going to sing it tonight (at the Harbourside Brasserie), so he signs this on the CD booklet: "To Khoi, I am a chair, Love Steve Poltz". It was great, he was really friendly and he was hugging these girls and just being a big flirt! I hang around for a bit and I ask him some questions like: "Where's Jewel?" and "When are you coming back again?" and stuff like that. He says Jewel's at home, and he doesn't know when he'll be back again. Then he asks me if I'll be at the show tonight, and I say I'm not 18 yet. He goes "You have to be over 18 to get in?" and I say "I'll be 18 in 3 weeks!" and he goes "Man! I really want you to be there! I'll get you in!". And so now I'm desperately trying to find a way to get there tonight! I still couldn't believe I saw Steve at such a small, intimate venue such as my Uni, outside on the lawn! Forgive me for making this sound like a long story, I'm still in shock :) Your friend, Khoi P.S. He also made a joke about one of the guys he was with from LA who "wasn't used to the cars on the other side of the road, and he got hit by a bus and pissed his pants. Look at his left knee, it's all scraped up!" or something to that effect, this is all from memory :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 01:23:21 -0700 (PDT) From: Erik Johnson Subject: Re: Color Aura Issue and a whole lot more Okay, I think this may be one of my state of the universe posts (if not, oh well), but bare with me- it's very much about Jewel. To classify Jewel as any singular color of the spectrum seems ludicrous to me. IMO it goes against her ideas of humanity, self-defined purposes in living, and everything else, etc. etc. etc. Rather, I believe that Jewel's "theoretical" aura is pure white- the conglomeration of all spectrums of color in completion. This also happens to be bridgeable over into the new/old changing/not changing Jewel discussion and works as a good metaphor to explain the same theory that I tried to express years ago in my first discussion of the issue of a supposed "new" Jewel. First, consider the expressed purpose of the Higher Ground for Humanity organization. Namely and expressly- to advance the evolution of what it means to be human in the "highest" sense. Second, consider the multi-faceted performances and genres that are characteristic of Jewel as well as the attempts and developments that she has made to span all avenues and methods to express herself and her belief structure: music, poetry, drawing, movies, television, support of this list (with a similar purpose of existence to her own [in part developed through her encouragement of and relationship with the list]), access (through celebrity status) to the leading minds and most powerful individuals in the world for opportunities to have personal influence, etc. etc. etc. Third, consider what has been historically viewed as the "developed" human- The renaissance man (asexual instance of the word 'man' intended). A person who is developed in all areas of life including science, artistry, philosophy, the heart, spirituality, invention or creativity, etc. That is, someone who attempts to understand the world and become the best that they can be as a person. Since when looking at the world dyadicly we can see benefit and goodness in any side of any idea, we must take what is good from all ideas and conglomerate them into one single "good." I propose this is Jewel's conclusion on the matter and explains the difficulty that can be had in understanding her sometimes dyadic behavior. Fourth, consider her supportive comments of Marilyn Manson. This shows a transcending sense of what good and bad are, as she must consider what may be said to be "ethical" issues rather than "moral" issues. That is, what is truly good rather than what rules are truly good. She has in her person, been able to make manifest this same form of good within her while concurrently manifesting what other good there is as well, that is, happiness, hope, etc. Fifth, consider the macro-psychology within the process of manipulating society that must be implemented in order to push them in a direction that is more evolved and developed. If she is truly interested in doing good for the world (even if only by changing philosophical view points), she is going to want to reach the greatest number of individuals that she can in order to have a greater effect of good on the resident and future minds of the world. Therefore, she may have started out as a folk artist, and she may now be a pop artist, but the music she writes is not who she is, the she writes her music (and poetry, art, etc.) because of who she is. Because she wants to help improve the world. She has since before her music career ever started, as is noted in Nedra's conversation (it has been mentioned in many interviews) where she speaks about the day Jewel first decided to play music and how she (Nedra) sent Jewel to her room to write out the reasons that she wanted to become a performer and then rank them. If you haven't heard this story, it's floating around on the net, I believe it will help us to understand Jewel's alpha level purpose in being what she is. Understanding that, we understand who she is. Okay, I may have gotten a little preachy there at the end, but I think all in all, that I have presented some *at least* good reasons to think of Jewel as the color white. Hey All. I am doing a research paper on Jewel and how her life has affected her poetry and would love to know what you EDA's think about her poetry, the good and the bad. Those of you that really like her poetry might be interested in my paper when it is finished, although I will not be a critical review of the poetry. Also, do any of you know where I can find other people who have done critical reviews of her poetry? I am gonna take some time to listen to what they have to offer and help them out by giving a little something to their cause. It's something that i haven't done in the past, in fact i try to avoid walking past buskers and if i have to, i would feel stink and generally look away. That's my two cents worth. Yesterday I listened to Pieces Of You. The last time I did that, was quite a while ago. The last few weeks, I only listened to live tapes and stuff like that, and also to Spirit. But yesterday, I was kinda bad-tempered, you know, just one of those sad days. I listened to POY, and suddenly I realised why people, at least why I, have my doubts about the sound of Spirit. To me, it's not that Spirit isn't as good as POY, or that I don't like the band, but listening to POY gave me this weird feeling... that feeling that I got when I heard Foolish Games for the first time. That ultimate Jewel-feeling, and I just don't get that when I listen to Spirit, at least not as much. Maybe it's the way that it's recorded, or it's Jewel voice, cause POY isn't great voice-technically, but that's exactly what makes it fantastic and human and so damn beautiful. Well, just thought I'd share... Second, I read about Jewels birthday and what we can give to her. Jewel is in the Netherlands around that time, and the day after her birthday, she will be performing at Pinkpop. Of course we, the dutch Jewelfans, want to give Jewel something for her birthday, if that is possible. We thought about something we made ourselves, not a present you can buy... But the big question is 'what can we give her'? I'd like to hear from you guys, what do you think? That's the day after Jewel's birthday. Because it is the day after we thought it would be really cool to give her already something from the Dutch EDA's. Nothing bought but something special that she would like ) This afternoon I contacted thePinkpop organisation and they said I should contact the recordlabel and so I did. The women who was in charge there was very rude to me and made it clear that she couldn't ( or wouldn't ) arenge something that Jewel could get her gift. She sugested that we throw it at the podium. Personally I think that Jewel would like our idea of giving her a present. Does anyone has a idea what we can do to get the gift to her? Your tips would really be appreciated. I posted this a few weeks ago, but since its handy & we'll be getting many more new people this year (with the tour & all), I'm gonna repost this again every few weeks. Just delete it if you don't need it & let it help those that can benefit from it. Thanks, Alan Hi everyone & especially new Jewel list subscribers! Here's some helpful advice to relatively new subscribers who are usually a bit confused & by no fault of thier own, not knowledgable of the history of the EDAs or these Jewel mailing lists. First of all--WELCOME! Since the list FAQ is almost 4 years old & extremely out of date , it's understandibly difficult for new subscribers to get a grip on all that goes on in this large community. These lists, as you can probably sense, have facilitated the developement of many personal relationships among listmembers. The EDAs have also gone beyond the boundaries of the NET & have participated in quite a few great outside projects geared toward helping others as well as meeting in larger groups at music & non-music related events. The purpose of this email is to give new folks a hand at finding the best resources to help with understanding this group called The EDAs. I promise any new person who takes the time to visit these sites, that you will enjoy the lists much more, feel right at home & be as knowledgable as most seasoned vets. (And those grumpy old vets will appreciate your effort.) I'm sure many of you new folks want to know more, but may not know how to educate yourself about the goings-on here. So here's some helpful suggestions for you. Please take the time to check these out. It's painless, I promise & actually fun.
