["Rebecca Smith" Subject: Jewel's B-day and Re: Why I like Jewel Hi angels :) After a long, untypical silence, I once again have a few things I would like to say. First, the easy part, about Jewel's birthday.... Whoever it was that posted on it (sorry I'm bad with names :) ) said something about an act of kindness... Well, I think what we should give Jewel isn't something anyone else can give her... Ok, I'll make that a bit clearer... Anyone can BUY Jewel a nice present. i think what we can do is far more creative and fun :) For example, we can make her a big scrapbook with letters from us all. Since we have time, we can get someone to agree to organize it, and all the letters can be sent to him. I think it could be very beautiful and very touching. That's just my two cents :) Mooooving on... For a while I've been feeling... Weird about Jewel. I can't-or couldn't-put my finger on it, I'm still not sure I can, but I'll try. When I first learned about Jewel, it was the music that caught me. then came the lyrics-that took more time to digest, that's just how I work. Only then came the actual person. I have always hated the idea of a "fan". I don't think any of us should adore another person. we all have different abilities, true, but there is no need to idolize someone for a certain ability of theirs. I think in a way it seems degrading for everyone... and it helps people grow a very large ego :) the thing about Jewel, is that being a "fan" was very different. Reading into her lyrics and poems, it would *appear* she agrees with me. Therefore, I have a bit of a hard time defining myself as an actual "fan"-I love her work, and as a person-I may not know her too well, but I did like what I saw. Something has changed. I became the fan I always hated, and she's changed. Change is not necessarily bad-but right now I'm not very sure where I stand about this... I think we all need to think what Jewel means to us. I love her music, yes, but I don't know about the new Jewel. she's a person after all, just like the rest of us :) That's one of the good things about her-the one i liked better than anything-her ability to admit it and stay that way. I'd like to think she's still like that. Only time will tell. Thanks for baring with me, I love you all tons! I've been noticing that there are more and more Asian EDAs on the list, and when I say Asian, I meant those in Asia itself :-) So with the help of the other Singaporean EDAs, I've set up a separate mailing list for us so as not to flood the main list with mundane stuff :) This mailing list is for the sole intention of helping each other with Angelfood. However, discussions of Jewel, her concerts here in Asia, reviews etc :-) But again, I stress, the main intention of the list is to help each other obtain Angelfood. The list is opened to all EDAs in Asia... although if you're not in Asia, and still want to join, by all means :-) But be expected to help out with Angelfood. The address to join is http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/sea_edas If you have any questions whatsoever, feel free to contact me :-) Jeanette ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 17:12:39 GMT From: "Everything Breaks" Subject: Jewel Charts This is on my page, but I thought you all would like to know. •Spirit is on the rise again! Hello to all, I just wanted to let people know that, for all you international EDAs who can't find Seventeen magazine wherever you are, I bought 3 extra copies of it yesterday (the one with Jewel on the cover), and will happily send them out to people who need them. So just drop me a line if you want me to send one your way. :) Blessed Be, Rebecca :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 14:20:49 EDT From: Cisalpine@aol.com Subject: a foolish dream? I know this has to be a stupid question, but does anyone out there know of any ways to get backstage passes for the Wa. show that I haven't already thought of. The only thing that I have thought that might have even a remote chance of working is writing a freelance review for a newspaper and getting a press pass from them, but that is a longshot. Anyways, if anyone has any bright ideas for how to help a loner singer/songwriter meet his spiritual guide, they would be greatly appreciated. Each is about 15 minutes. Go check it out! Oh yeah, if you don't know by now, Jewel is on the cover of the may issue of Seventeen. I read it at a friends house, and there is a contest where you can win a guitar signed by jewel. Since I don't have the magazine, could someone who does tell me, and the list where to send entries for the contest? Some of you may have seen this on the list, but since you requested to be informed of gatherings in your area, this is being sent to you individually also :-) For those of you who haven't seen it, I wanna hear from you soon ! :-) This is also being reposted to the jewel list(s) to be sure that all interested persons have the opportunity to attend - Hope to hear from most of you!!!! Feel free to send me questions if you have them! Tammy :-) What: EDAF sponsored Beach Cleanup When: April 24!!!! (gathering from April 23-25) Where: A beach in S. Amboy (gathering at Campbells in Old Bridge) Why?: To show our support to the EDAF and the care of our environment! Contact me at Tlcathome@aol.com for more info or to RSVP!!!!!!! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ---------------------------------------------- << APRIL 24th - The EDAF cleans our newly adopted beach in South Amboy, NJ for the first time, and the Campbells have offered to once again bravely open up their home to fellow EDAs! Tammy and Rob have previously held wildly successful events such as the aforementioned Great EDAdventure, our first EDAF food bank all-volunteer weekend and of course, hosted a stop on the 1997 Living Room Tour series. Each event found at least two dozen EDAs from a half dozen states spending the weekend as part of the family. TOO COOL FOR WORDS. If you are able to reach New Jersey that weekend, you're foolish not to do it! (Tammy's going to post details soon, and I have something I saw in a cartoon that I'd like to try out that weekend...) >> Gee, this doesn't even mention the pre-Jewel show gathering we had when she played the PNC, or the pre-Poltz show gathering turned weekend and EDA birthday celebration last April :-) Are we nuts or just EDA addicts - you decide ;-) OK, folks! Here is just a little info for you......... We are probably less than 20 minutes (depending on traffic as you New Jersey-ites know all too well...) from South Amboy, so we're in a good location for hosting wayward EDA's in our home once again :-) Many of you are familiar with our locale, but for those of you who are not, we are in Central Jersey in a town called Old Bridge - if you want to look at a map, we are just south of New Brunswick and East Brunswick and North of Freehold - if Old Bridge isn't on your map, just look for where routes 9 and 18 meet and we are just a mile or two north of that - but don't quote me on that :-) Specific directions etc... will be sent out to individuals planning to attend along with our phone # in case you need to contact us..... For those of you who have never attended a gathering, don't worry, we aren't too scary :-) Just a few things to keep in mind - be sure to have money to pitch in on food, whether we order in, take over a local eatery (I still have my IHOP coaster autographed by Harris from the Great EDAdventure weekend - lol), or have a good ol' Campbell BBQ, we just can't feed the masses (especially since we go to Vegas the following weekend - jealous? hehe). We will also be doing something fun that you'll need some money for - I'm leaning toward the goofy golf arcade outing since it's close and should have something fun for everyone :-) I plan on people arriving starting Friday afternoon and staying until whenever the h*ll they want on Sunday :-) If you need other arrangements, let me know. As soon as I start hearing from people, I'll send a list of attendees out and where they are coming from so people may arrange to share rides if needed..... If you plan on taking a train in or something, let us know and we can try to arrange a pickup. Oh, almost forgot - plan to bring a sleeping bag or blankets and a pillow for floor crashing! OK, most of you know what to do now, right? E-mail me and let me know if you plan to attend! Please include where you will be coming from and if you can offer rides or need a ride and if it's ok to list your e-mail addy so you may contact each other for rides...... oh, and please include your age! That's all I can think of for now, but feel free to e-mail me with any questions - but please put beach cleanup in the subject line so I don't miss it! Hope to hear from a bunch of you!!! Huggles!!!! Tammy :-) who you will all be sick of hearing from by the end of the summer...... heh ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 22:27:43 EDT From: NikosSong@aol.com Subject: ERGHH I still don't understand why you guys bring up the "new jewel" topic. I'm not sure if anyone brought this up, so bear with me: I read that many people did not like the "new" kind of music on spirit, and they liked the solo guitar on POY. But did you not remember? Jewel wrote many of the songs on spirit early in her career, many around the same time as the POY album. So, basically, what I am trying to say is that just because the new songs are on her sophomre album, does not necessarily mean they are "new" songs. OK, that was all babble, so I'm going to try and restate it again. None of jewel's songs are new because they were mostly all written at the same time. :) There, I think i got my point across. Thanks! Jenni ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #193 ***************************
