Is there any sort of fundraising organization behind this? I just think that even with such an explosive line-up, the $150 should partially, at least, be toward something beneficial to people who need it. I'm saying this 'cuz of all the horrible things going on in Kosovo, I feel guilty for wanting to go. I know bad things happen all the time, but still. Back in '69 didn't they want peace? Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Thanks for listening. .. In a recent Singapore interview, Jewel was asked what she defined as "real kindness". Her answer was consistent with with she has told us EDAs for years: "For my birthdays, I used to get presents...and I wrote to them saying, "Y' know, I've so much abundance in my life that I don't even need them, now for my birthday every year , I get about 5000 hours of community service done in my honour and to me that's really fantastic and it makes me feel that I can exist more normally as a person within fame because people are watching me less for right and wrong actions as they are looking more at themselves. That's kindness to me because I don't think kindness is a constant anything it's a goal you try to upkeep through out." (Jewel) So, Jewel's birthday is coming up again on May 23rd, when she turns 25. (Didn't she just have a birthday last year?!?) Here's an idea for what EDAs can give her as a present. I propose that everyone go out and perform as many acts of "everyday kindness" as possible over the next month. These acts can be as small or large as you want them to be -- the important thing is to do them! Best of all, this produces a win-win-win scenario. EDAs truly make a difference, the recipients of the acts of kindness have renewed faith in human nature, and Jewel sees what you EDAs are really made of! What constitutes an act of kindness? Well, anything done for the benefit of another. It can be volunteering with a charitable organization, donating that older computer (sitting in your garage since you upgraded) to your local school or community center (odds are you'll never use the old one again), or helping an elderly neighbor paint a fence or clear their yard of trash. All the acts of kindness reported back to the list can be documented in a scrapbook, and the more creative (and industrious) angels among us can make their own individual page to contribute! The EDAF will take the individual pages, put them together and have them professionally bound into a "Book of EveryDay Acts of Kindness", which we will give to Jewel before she starts her north american tour. The EDAF will also scan the entire volume, and make it available as a digital book for everyone interested in seeing what our EDA community managed to do. This is a big project and we don't much time, but if there's strong interest by you EDAs, I GUARANTEE it will get done! So, what do y'all think? Any takers? Any other ideas for it? I was hoping that anyone who has seen Jewel live in concert would send me a review that they wrote themselves for my webpage. I'll give you credit, of course (unless you want to remain anon). It would really help me out a lot. I'm sure I'm going to get a million reviews and regret ever posting this :) Take care everyone. ~*Jessie*~- the angel with the most cake http://welcome.to/asb ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 21:57:25 EDT From: Swish9127@aol.com Subject: NJC: Looking for EDAs from Minn, Wisc, Iowa Hi everyone, I'm Erin from La Crescent, Minnesota (which borders Wisconsin and Iowa), and I'm looking for people that live around here to talk to or even possibly enough a time for a gathering around here...I wish I had the money to travel to all these gathering around the world, but unfortunately I'm not able to...So please email me at Swish9127@aol.com or ErinLintelman@hotmail.com Thanx again Always Smiling Erin "The Sparkling Angel" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 22:48:29 -0400 From: Mandy Sidorski Subject: jewel desktop Hi Everyone! Voice-Her voice is unique but pleasant. She can make it soar with upper notes (as in the song "Morning Song" "Do not answer the DOOOORR"; she can yodel really fast, she can enunciate as in "Who Will Save Your Sole" and she can vary from low to high notes in the same song as in "Amen" and "Angel by Your Side." Her voice is incredibly versatile, but it is also instantly recognizable. It is not pap-encrusted, cheery like Tracy Chapman, but rather has its earthy grating quality to it that makes the listener know a someone real is playing. 2. Songwriting-She is a prolific. At a recent San Diego concert she wrote four songs on the morning of the performance, took her handwritten notes up to the stage and performed the songs beautifully. All her songs are perfect in describing an aspect of the human condition and weaving the lyrics to the music. Her yodeling song is cheery, her songs about disgruntled housewives are minor in key, her songs about heavenly things soar. Her songs about love and relationships are right on point. Her songs about media, news and politics are also very insightful. Amazingly, she is ONLY 21 years old. I can't believe she has experienced all of the emotions (breakups, love, death of friends, religious epipheny, loss of brother) that her songs speak of. She must also write of things that she hasn't experienced, but is able to convey through her songs the emotions of those experiences as well. 3. Performance-Jewel is so friendly and approachable at her concerts! She treats the audience as partners. "What do you want to hear?" She discloses a lot about her personal life. She always thanks the audience for appreciating her and her music. I have never seen her flub a performance or just go through the motions. She puts her heart and soul into her music and cares a lot about performing it just right. 4. The music scene--Jewel is never someone who will be co-opted by celebrity. She is just a person who happens to have talent at singing and songwriting. She will not put her fans below her. She lives for her fans and her music. She genuinely cares about people and it shows in her dealings. She always lives up to her promises and appearance commitments. 5. Decent human being--Besides her talent, Jewel as a person is a very kind and caring individual. She cares about her family to the point of calling her mother her best friend and making her manager. She cares enough about a lost half-brother that she wrote a song about him which ends, "P.S. I love you, your sister Jewel." When asked in interviews what she wants to achieve she says, modestly, "I want to be happy and eat every day." She cares about people and happiness more than money and fame. As far as I can tell, she has never snapped at anyone or made a cold business decision that hurt someone. I think Jewel realizes that everyone on the planet is in this together, and she wishes her contribution to the whole of humanity to be positive. The unusual thing about a famous person is that although I have hardly met Jewel, I feel like I know her. I don't want to intrude into her personal life, but that is the nature of celebrity. People talk about you, who hardly know you. I hope Jewel doesn't mind this discussion. Keep in mind that it is out of appreciation. - - --James Reach ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #192 ***************************
