It's highly likely that when the Jewel concert posters went up around town, nobody even noticed the fine-print that had Poltz's name down as the opening act. But the Nova Scotia, Canadian-born, San Diego-bred singer-songwriter is not one to complain about the lack of fame. He's used to the underdog role and he doesn't need to sweat it to appease crowds. While he may seem oblivious to the possibility of owning a few hillside mansions, you can't deny this laidback bloke has a simple gameplan. In realising the odds, Poltz has made it a point to push himself hard to gain some form of recognition with his gutsy debut One Left Shoe (Mercury Records). "I'll probably get about two people who have actually heard about me in these parts (Kuala Lumpur). But that doesn't really matter because once they've checked out my set, they'd probably wanna get to know me and my music better," says Poltz, smirking during an interview at the Shangri-La Hotel last week. Ever the optimist, Poltz is moving on to better Poltz had just flown in from Singapore, didn't have much time before the Jewel concert soundcheck, and appeared rather concerned about pigs being topped here--enquiring if pork was safe to eat. Otherwise, he was more than chuffed to sit through a short, casual chat about himself: Poltz, the singer-songwriter. "It's interesting to win over an audience that hardly knows anything about you, but the point is I would love to get a few copies of my debut sold here," he adds, before modestly revealing, "There were six copies of my album available at Borders (in Singapore), that was, I think a pretty good count." Talk about optimism. Poltz actually takes the time to check out local record stores to suss out his album. He knows that he has an opportunity to make an impression, and being part of Jewel's entourage might get him the necessary breaks. "I've been a solo artiste for the past two years; there're fewer hang-ups with this arrangement. I just got tired of being in a band, since everyone was leaving in the first place." In a way, Poltz has set his sights on achieving a level of acclaim as an earnest singer-songwriter. He used to be in the garage rock outfit called the Rugburns, which released two indie albums and managed one minor college hit (Me And Eddie Vedder). "Back in the US, it's hard making a living as a male singer-songwriter because there's hardly any attention given to this genre ... I reckon, only James Taylor gets to play stadium-sized venues while the rest of us have to settle for coffee-house gigs," he laughs. Poltz rationalises that contemporary male singer-songwriters are relatively ignored because they're probably too non-mainstream, preferring contemplative and difficult albums which hardly have any MTV generation appeal. But he's contented with being a solo act, because recognition will follow if you connect to enough people. "I think artistes like Elliot Smith and Ron Sexsmith are good examples of this generation's male singer-songwriter talent, while Paul Westerberg's new album (Sucaine Gratifaction) is the best thing I've heard in a while," he mentions. It's not a surprise when Poltz indicates that a good deal of his music background and taste includes listening to Bob Dylan, The Replacements and Joni Mitchell records. Honing his craft in Californian bars and busking across Europe helped too. All said, Poltz has an interesting CV to boast since he co-wrote Jewel's massive hit You Were Meant For Me and was partly responsible for giving the Alaskan-raised sensation her first break at the Innerchange Coffeehouse, San Diego. "It's too bad that the coffeehouse closed down, I guess, nobody was paying the bills. But Jewel, of course, has moved on to much better things," Poltz says, before adding that he's doing fine himself and catching up pretty fast too. In fact, Jewel even endorses Poltz's album during her shows and their friendship and songwriting relationship has grown from strength to strength. Jewel co-wrote a couple of songs on Poltz's debut, including the whimsical single Silver Lining. For someone who claims to be an incurable romantic and has a sock-it-to-me vibe about him, Poltz sure has all his bases covered. The man's 15-track debut is a sunny slice of direct and honest acoustic-pop, chronicling love-obsessed everyman tales, quirky Adam Sandler-like tunes and even a little honky tonk on the side--all tasty and dripping with optimism. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, with tear-jearkers like Kicking Distance and Broken Hearts And Painted Nails right down to the Nashville-inspired The Great Mystery, sharing the same bill with Silver Lining, which pays homage to ex-San Diego Padres hero John Kruk. No prizes for guessing Poltz's favourite baseball team. Even if commercial success has been hard to come by, Poltz will always leave a memorable, lingering impression as a chap who proudly wears his heart on his sleeve. Notwithstanding the cheeky Star Wars parodies, too (which he composed and sang at the concert). * Call Universal Music at 03-983 5633 to get Steve Poltz's debut on the local racks. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ shad 96c / 3A CS / mac activist / eda / fumbler fan of / jewel / sophie b. / sarah slean / steve poltz / emm gryner / / x-files / buffy / dawson's creek / habs / bills / 49ers / t h i n k d i f f e r e n t. you spend all your time waiting for that second chance / for a break that'll make it okay / - -- Sarah McLachlan, "Angel" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 20:56:11 EDT From: Krz4catz@aol.com Subject: National Poetry Month Hi everyone! Jewel at the peace love rock and roll event will be great, I hope I can go, its only 5 or 6 thousand miles, I only need bus tickets, concert tickets, friends to go with, and a miricle for my parents to let me go. Korn, Limp Bizket, and possibly Guns and Roses will perform(whick i like all of), and I just hope Jewel is accepted by the audence, i remember she said she had to open up for gothic and punk shows in the past, and it wasn't always the greatest possible results. Well, well. Another case of someone wising up and listening to Harris! ;-) Luna's llama stories recall a bizarre streak of llama-centric occurrences over the past three years, most notably Amy's obsession and X-files type encounters with them, the infamous Hot Dog Fest Week discovery of miniature llamas on the Paramount studio backlot in LA (remember that one, Amy, Tom and Larry? ;-) and 1997's Great Looney Tunes EDAdventure and Search for the Elusive Blue Llama Safari! (Yes, we spotted one. Who could doubt the word of 54 EDAs on a mission from the Dolly Llama herself?) True story: two months ago, I found a book on raising llamas in my library (no joke), and when I finally went to return it late, I drove by a pair of llamas in a pasture. It was VERY handy having the field guide, just to avoid the embarrassing possibility of mistaking apalcas for llamas (don't you just HATE it when that happens?). When I attempted to frolick in the pasture with them, the male llama tried to spit, but I beat him to it. That's the trick with llamas -- you can't let 'em push you around. ;-) I'm sure that Luna, Tessa and Amias' visit to Mozart's Cafe was a blast, and the perfect end to a central Texas EDA gathering. Tessa and I had a post-midnight coffee there two summers ago, and were damn near assaulted on the river patio by an obese racoon (obviously wired on too much caffeine)! I look forward to their Texas EDA *big ass* event, and wouldn't miss it for the world. Now, who else wants to arrange a *big ass* angel event? Hmmmm, initials of BAA? As in BAAAAAAAAAAAAA? (another EDA urban legend involving inhabitants of the pasture, but I'm not telling it!) How do you get involved? Well, here's a quick rundown on EDA happenings that I'm aware of: APRIL 18th - Amy and other EDAs staff Team EDAF in the Jersey City Walk for MS. EDA Lesley is also forming a team for the Corpus Christi, Texas event. Me, I'm donating blood locally and getting those free delicious juice boxes and chocolate chip cookies. Email EDAFinfo@aol.com if you need details on any of these events. APRIL 24th - The EDAF cleans our newly adopted beach in South Amboy, NJ for the first time, and the Campbells have offered to once again bravely open up their home to fellow EDAs! Tammy and Rob have previously held wildly successful events such as the aforementioned Great EDAdventure, our first EDAF food bank all-volunteer weekend and of course, hosted a stop on the 1997 Living Room Tour series. Each event found at least two dozen EDAs from a half dozen states spending the weekend as part of the family. TOO COOL FOR WORDS. If you are able to reach New Jersey that weekend, you're foolish not to do it! (Tammy's going to post details soon, and I have something I saw in a cartoon that I'd like to try out that weekend...) For May, I have a suggestion that the EDAs might want to consider (trust me, I'm Harris!), but I'll have to spill the beans on THAT one later this week. :-) June OR August - I hope the *big ass* Austin gathering happens so I can attend. I haven't tubed down the Guadalupe River or canoed Town Lake in years, hint, hint... ANOTHER Great EDAdventure might be in the works, according to my spies in the Campbells' neighborhood. July 16-18th - The third annual EDA Bearsville campout near Woodstock, NY. Over 50 EDAs experience 3-4 days of wilderness survival, EDA style. July 22-23rd - A bunch of us will be terrorizing MacWorld Expo in the Big Apple (hey, lots of EDAs use the damn things ;-) Think Different! Word process with a pad of newsprint and a #2 lead pencil! Woodstock Weekend with a little Jewel in it - I like Alan's (MrBB) idea of pay-per-viewing it and making it an excuse for localized EDA gatherings. Jewel Show Gatherings - Dates are to be determined. Once Alan can announce Jewel's north american tour schedule (please don't bug him about it), I think our "usual suspects" will whip up a series of gatherings across the country. The main thing is, don't be shy. We're all strangers at one point, but that situation ends REAL quick when you walk through the door. (Okay, I'm the exception -- I remained strange ;-) Misc. EDA Happenings - Response to the membership call for the EveryDay Angels Foundation has been very strong, and we hope to hear from even more of you! Donations have been coming in, so the EDAF is sending out those EDA guitar picks in appreciation! The EDA Registry database, which tracks who wants to get together for gatherings by area, is up to a count of 133 tonight! I'll post more details on gatherings as I stumble across them. One more thing. The coolest thing about the Hill Country Llamas' posts is that they are very indicative of what happens when EDAs get together. GOOD STUFF HAPPENS. Normally, I think we forget to open our eyes and look at the world with innocence. Instead, we watch TV, look at our feet while walking, and just assume what's all around us. (Big mistake.) Being around EDAs and loosening up creates an expectation that there ARE llamas around every corner, that we can relax and find answers to all the questions. And that many of the questions (and most of our fears) are needless, anyway. It's hard to fully appreciate it until it happens. Then it becomes as clear as a spring day on Sesame Street... :-) Dennis, brought to ewe by the letters E, D and A... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 22:54:51 -0400 From: Courtney M Gordon Subject: absolutely no jewel content what-so-ever Dear Angels, I have now decided to come out of the shadows and stop lurking around.
