I have a couple things to talk about today...I've been saving up, so hopefully this will be worth your while reading. First off, I was just in my car driving home and the Top 9 at 9 came on our local station and Jewel's DSL is at number 6! They just started playing her song last week! I thought this was pretty good news! He also said a little blurb about Jewel after the song...he said that "she is expanding her talent field (or something to this effect) and she performed in her first movie that will be coming out later this year. IT's a western film and I don't even know the name of it, but it will be out in late summer." I have been trying to get through on the phone to keep his details correct...but it has been busy....I 'll keep trying... The other thing I wanted to ask of anyone out there that can help...I would like the tabs for Life Uncommon and Jupiter and What's Simple is True...is any one has them or knows a site that the links actually work...I would really appreciate this. I would also like to know: 1) does anyone out there know where Jewel toured in Canada on her last tour? 2) I still would like info on Lenedra's family history...geneology 3) I was wondering if anyone had little stories about how each of Jewels song was formed? On albums and especially off...Who they are about, or written for, and about what time period they were writtenin.... Thanks so much for all your help... Keep Smiling Erin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 03:13:43 EST From: LuverMb20@aol.com Subject: re:spirit question <> I cant answer your other questions but i'll try this one. I just think that it means that love isnt definable or even understandable. Its this natural thing, that people do. And when soemone else loves another person deeply, its like...that person's love is so strong, it becomes this powerful thing. And you cant understand it, or 'comprehend it' because its like it has a mind of its own. People say that love makes you do strange things, i think its related to that in a way . so, to sum it up, i think that people love so much of another that the person being loved cannt possibly grasp how much they are truly loved. on another hand, it could be a 'spiritual' thing. for people who believe in god, or another higher power such as god. that 'we are loved beyond our ability to comprehend' implies that there is someone or something above, watching out for us, taking care of us, that we are possibly unaware of just how much we are loved by this being. And that is my interpretation of the quote. I have no idea what Jewel means by it, but that is what I believe it to imply. Thanks for listening! My mom just brought home another newspaper. The newspaper has an official site, but the interview doesn't seem to be up there, so I'll just type it out :-) - -Jeanette "This Jewel is honest, playful, and has a quick temper." You have to try real heard to remember that Jewel Kilcher is one of the biggest musicians today. Because you would never be able to tell, if you met her in real life. After finishing an interview with some Hong Kong journalists in a posh hotel suite, the 24-year-old singer came out to the waiting area and went: "Okay, who's the next victim?" I sheepishly introduced myself. Understandably, if you consider that in the three short years since her first album, Pieces of You, came out, she's been on the cover of almost every magazine, including prestigious Time magazine. After a warm handshake, Jewel asked me: "Want to join me in the corridor?" She walked out with her two band members and plonked herself down to the carpeted floor and smiled: "Okay, let's do it." NOT WELL-REHEARSED ANSWERS You could tell this wasn't going to be a conventional interview. Mostly, I was having trouble dealing with the fact that the friendly singer, sitting on the floor has sold 12 million copies of her debut album. Decked casually in a red singlet and blue jeans, Jewel is a woman of few words. Yet, you couldn't help but feel that whatever she said weren't well-rehearsed answers from her thousands of interviews. Critics have labeled her music as honest and so are the vibes you get from her as well. She admitted that talking about herself all the time was weird, as was seeing her face on Time magazine last year, although that was also "cool". She also admitted she didn't know what to expect from the Singapore concert-goers. "I just hope they like my music," she said. With so many stories written about her, it was hard finding something new to talk about, but Jewel gave a hand. "I've gone over this so many times, I'm ready. Okay, I was raised by Alaskan wolves and had a terrible childhood because I never listened to the Beatles," she said with a wry smile. In truth, of course, Jewel was born in Alaska, raised by very human parents, and is a fan of the Fab Four. While not envisioning a career change, Jewel has completed filming for an Ang Lee movie, Ride iwth the Devil, where she plays a feisty bride during the American Civil War. She also released her second album, Spirit, in November last year. When asked if a third is on the way, she said: "Come on, I only just had my second!" Ah, that notorious Jewel quick temper coming to the forefront? "There you go, I've just displayed my quick temper," she said with a laugh. Playfully, Jewel brandished a huge diamond on her ring finger. "Tell in, in Singapore, does this mean I'm married?" asked Jewel who is currently dating a male model. When I nodded, she said: "Well, I'm not, and I'm not engaged either." When told that I was done with the interview, Jewel stood up and shook my hand again. "It was really nice talking to you," she said. For the first time for as long as I can remember interviewing celebrities (about 4 years now), I actually believed that. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 17:51:09 +1200 From: "Peszynski Family" Subject: Jewel, Live in Wellington 20/03/1999 LONG POST! Hello to all the lufferly EDA's, I know this is an extremely late post, but I'm still going ahead with it. Ok, so my friend (also on this list) bought the tickets way back on January 26th or something like that, and slowly the anticipation increases and finally the day came. My girlfriend and I (also on this list) kept walking past the Queens Wharf Events Centre a couple of times an hour in the hope that we may see something, all we could see was the stage crew setting up and nothing else. so we met up with Nick and his friend and walked around the Centre again in the hope of seeing something (no luck) but Nick did manage to have a chat to the head of security, unfortunately didn't come to anything! our next destination was the Hotel at which Jewel was staying, we thought she might be in the bar relaxing and having a nice cool drink. didn't see anything for a while then we caught a glimpse of 3 people that looked like Jewel, her Mum and Steve from a distance, so we went in to check it out, but no such luck. However, what i did see was (and paid no attention at the time) were 3 or 4 people sitting in the foyer (which i later found out where the bassist, drummer, keyboardist and lead guitarist). so we left, went home, changed, went back into town, met up with everyone (bout 8 of us) ate, then headed over to the Centre, ready for an awesome night. (what i didn't mention before was that Nick managed to get us FRONT ROW TICKETS! right in the middle, and it worked out we were about 3 metres away from Jewel. so we got in about 7:50ish i think, bought our goodies from the sales desk, and sat down, had a look around and waited. one thing we didn't know was the Jewel's mum walked right by us and no-one picked up on it (talk about silly!). Steve Poltz was on first...AMAZING! I really dug the guy, he was funny, awesome songs, chair song (made up at soundcheck), Star Wars song, Go Chewwie Go, ARGH! he finished and got a HUGE round of applausal, justified too i might add. we then waited for about 20 odd mins and then the music went off and the stage was dark. someone came out and everyone whispered 'is that her', 'it's her' and the like, and she started off with Near You Always, damn well impressive, blew me away. i can't remember the exact songlist, but the stand out songs for me were Jupiter, Down So Long, Angel Standing By, YWMFM and Foolish games, wow, that last one blew me further away, just Her singing so hauntingly and the keyboardist, so soft and nice. another stand out point was they were performing Down So Long, then it came up to the silence of about 2 or 3 seconds, and my other friend in the 3rd row yelled out, 'Keep up the good work Jewel!' talk about perfect timing! one other cool bit was when Jewel was singing YWMFM and asked us to sing the chorus, unfortunately no-one really sung it except Nick and myself, and we just BELTED it out, as loud as possible, she liked it! after it finished she looked down at Nick and asked if it were only us guys singing it, talk about awesome! so it came up to the bit where Jewel got everyone up close to the stage, i nearly got right to the front, but these little girls were faster than me! so we rocked for a bit and then she finished. Chris and I (another friend) started the 'Encore' chant and on she came again, her mum sung the hidden song on Spirit and then she finished off with Angel Standing By. that was it, i was still awestruck, the event was totally amazing. but wait...there's more, we waited for everyone to leave, and happened to see Steve Poltz on the wing signing some stuff, so we went over got our ticket stubs signed and a few other bits and pieces, also tried to get to the after party but Steve was keeping quiet. anyway, we went back to the hotel thinking she might be there, but no such luck, then 2 of the group went off and danced the night away, whilst the other 6 were waiting around the hotel, hoping to bump into someone, one of the others (Mike, the piker, if need be known) wanted to go with the others and drag us too, but I remained persistant and said no, just then, none other than Stever Poltz walked by, so we got my signitures and a few photos too. about 5 mins later the bassist walked past so we got more photos and a few more autographs. we then thought that Jewel might be hanging around backstage, so we walked over to the Centre again and immediately we saw the lead guitarist, Doug, and the keyboardist, Steve, more autographs and photos, which were awesome. that was nearly it, except my Girlfriend and i walked around the back in hope of anything, and we managed to get 2 guitar picks, one each, which is cool, because i play guitar. Doug wrote in my autograph, ' keep on pickin' ' cos i told him i play and he was pretty inspiriational! anyway, that was pretty much the jist of it. if you made it this far, congrat's. it would be better if you were there, it was mindblowing and if it could happen again, i'd definitely go for it, it's a show you MUST-SEE! the next few days were a bit of a let down, we didn't get to meet Jewel, but you can't have everything i guess. i'm just glad i have a real good friend with a huge heart that bought the tickets for the night! on behalf of the other 9 ppl there Nick, thanks again. i hope you all enjoyed reading this, it was fun typing and re-living it. i'll hear from you later. byebye Angel that likes Smashing Pumpkin (not only as a hobby) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 12:08:24 -0500 From: "Willms, Gregory J." Subject: NJC: RE: Patty Griffin tour info for 25 dates The thing that makes Patty Griffin so incredible, moreso in concert than on her albums is her sincerity. When you see her perform, you can tell that she believes what she's saying. And when someone does that, it makes the performance ten times better. I saw her at JewelStock.S and when she was on the 2nd stage at the first Lilith. I was right in her face at that one because no one knew who she was and you could basically walk right up to the stage. By the end of her set, the area was packed and quite a few of those people were in tears. I think she closed with "Let Him Fly", that'll do it every time. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 19:47:13 +0200 From: "michiel" Subject: Jewel in Paris - who is going to see her in this city? hello jewelfans, I am really excited to go to paris, this may to see Jewel. Also i am curious who is going to Offenbach, Stuttgart and Munich to see her perform in this cities. I will be there as well... So European fans of Jewel , let's mail eachother and make plans ...it should be a lot of fun in May to see Jewel sing :-) and of course to see Steve ....longtime collaborator of Jewel...*LOL* Greetings, Michiel dutch fan who has his own webpage http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html a dutch tribute page to Jewel - a beautiful angel from alaska ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 20:31:29 +0800 From: "Jean" Subject: Jewel performance Yeah, I know, it's me again :-) I just came back from a taping of an interview Jewel did for a local talk show. And it was amazing :-) It was incredibly crowded and I didn't have tickets, but my friends snuck me in. So when this guy was warming up the crowd, Jewel suddenly came out! Well, she was riding piggy back on this guy and they were running across the stage with Steve Poltz following behind. Everybody started screaming, and then they ran across again :-) Later, they came out and sat at a corner while watching the guy warm up the audience. Much later, Jewel came out for the interview (which I can't remember much of at the moment...), and she made small talk with the host. Jewel seemed as though she was having fun, laughing... making fun of the host and vice versa. She was dressed in a red T-shirt, a denim jacket and then jeans. She looked real good. She read a poem, and talked about going to Zouk, which is *the* club to go to here, and then they talked about animals speaking French (!?)... Jewel also talked about Higher Ground for Humanity, Nedra, touring, her horse... And then the host asked her if she had a boyfriend, and she quickly replied, no.... hmmmm... Later, she performed 'Hands', which was really funny because all her musicians switched roles, and Steve was playing the keyboards, her drummer was playing the guitar etc. Steve was totally having fun, with him pretending to play the keyboards with his feet. When the taping ended, they were just laughing. AND, I hugged Steve twice :-) He was sitting in the audience and I went up and introduced myself, and I gave him an Eeyore beanie baby, you know, 'Taking the World By Donkey'? Yeah, and then he gave me a hug, and then another one, and I was so *sigh* .... He's truly polite and very, very friendly. More from me tomorrow when I go and see the actual concert! And just an other question: are there EDAs who go to her concert in Zürich? Bye Jérémie ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #166 ***************************
