A rough diamond - --------------- Reformed hippie chick Jewel discovered that fame doesn't exactly open the right doors in Sydney. In town to promote her new album, Spirit, the 24-year-old Alaskan-born singer and a couple of hangers-on strolled across from their Double Bay hotel, the Ritz Carlton, to hot new nightclub The Embassy. Imagine thier surprise when they were denied entry by doorman David Panizzuti because they did not comply with the dress code. It seems that at this chic, Cross St haven, even $250 designer jeans are deemed inappropriate dress. "Jewel was actually fine," said one witness, "but she didn't want to go in without the other two and they didn't want to go back to the hotel and change." Needless to say, the thrillseekers did not take this well. At first, the guys tried unsuccessfully to push their way past the hunky Panizzuti, then they started uttering profanities. "It was ugly," an Embassy spokeman confirmed. "They used the kind of language not often heard in the Bay." Jewel was also unimpressed. "Don't you know who I am?" cried the woman who once did it so tough that she was forced to wash her hair in department stores. The group vowed to go to the media to report how badly they had been treated. Chrissie Camp, the national publicity manager at Jewel's record company, Warner Bors Music, said she knew nothing about the incident or the one mentioned below. "Jewel has now left the country," she said, "So, it's a little hard to get hold of her." The remainder of the group's trip did not go down well with the locals, either. Restauranter George Fischer, who has Fischer's coffee shop just across from the Ritz-Carlton, was not thrilled when some of Jewel's entourage swept out of the eatery, having clean forgotten to pay a $82 bill (blame it on that pesky jetlag). Thankfully, another hotel guest was there at the time, recognised the group and volunteered to take the bill back to the hotel. "Someone came back and paid $14," said Fischer, "so now I'm only owed $67." Isn't life grand? - -------------- There's also a picture that goes with the article, presumably taken during an interview in a hotel room or something. The caption says: Careless behaviour: Singer Jewel, whose party did not always observe the nicities of Sydney society. For the readers outside of Sydney, Double Bay is a pretty exclusive suburb, where most of the people living there are either doctors or lawyers. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Keep the concert reviews coming, enjoying them mucho. I just wanted to comment that though at first I was shocked when I heard about what happened to Jewel in Sydney, but going back over the post, I realized that it isn't really all that bad. Her friends started getting in an argument with the bouncer, and she came to their aid. It wasn't like she started the conflict, although I think her friends should've just walked away, instead of getting in a big fight. And as for the unpaid coffee shop bill, Jewel was not present at the time. It was her entourage, which behaved deplorably in my opinion, by walking out on such a large unpaid bill. - -Salinger99, The Philosopher Angel Jewel on DVD P.S. I keep wanting to post this to the board, but I end up posting about another subject, and I don't like to post so frequently, because I know people get annoyed when one person takes up so much digest room. Anyway, I was just wondering if Jewel upcoming home video was going to be pressed onto DVD. I know it's probably in a very preliminary stage right now, especially with Jewel out of the country, touring like mad, but I just wanted to put that out there, as a sort of suggestion to the Jewel creative team, since putting it only on VHS would be ignoring an incredible part of the consumer market, and would be incredibly passe in this day and age, since groups such as Hootie and the Blowfish, Alanis Morissette, Hanson, and I believe Madonna have released their videos on DVD. VHS is half-dead, already, and when recordable DVD comes out, it'll begin to head the way of the 8-track, joining cassette tapes as a technology hanging on by only a thread at this point. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1999 15:07:09 -0500 From: juel@mtneer.net (Sarah McCarthy) Subject: a little jewel... a little steve... just a mention here and there.... in the current issue of Marie Claire, there is one small article about Jewel with a pic... Just a warning for you all. 'Answering Machine' is a GREAT CD, with classic Steve wit and humor (which, however, sometimes is an aquired taste). But, the sound quailty on the CD isn't the greatest, and as it says on the CD, it was recorded over the phone, right from Steve's answering machine/voice mail, and recorded with a Sony Walkman held to the receiver.
