With attrition, hey, maybe you'll get back your little coffee house in time as you turn more and more people off. All this talk sure makes new members feel oh-so-welcome. I'm not a recent fan, just a new lister. Anyone know of any other Jewel list with less complaints? harin somone wrote : We once were a nice, little coffee house in the Village full with great food and drink, enlightening conversation, regulars(list vets), performers, discussion, etc. But at some point we became Starbucks. An overpopulated brand name, a congregational spot overcrowded with unfamiliar people taking up space and bogging down intelligent discussion. And you know what? The coffee suffered. What was once flavorful and vibrant became dull and bland. Censorship and moderation narrowed topics down. List vets jumped ship to the digest or just left completely. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 00:31:18 EST From: Jwlfan22@aol.com Subject: magazine info hola everyone i just joined the digest version (i've been on news-only for a long while) and i'm really happy to be joining the community (just like all the others have said). i haven't been able to read my news lately but i thought i should let you know about a few magazines i've found . . . first, jewel is on the cover of teen magazine. the picture on the front seems new to me, but all the pictures on the inside are old and the article is really disappointing. i bought it though, even though it's a girl's magazine (i was so embarrassed). also, there an L.A. magazine called the music connection (published every other thursday) that i found at barnes & noble that has a picture of jewel on the cover. i like the picture (it's from the same shoot as that green picture on the official website), but there's only one mention in the actual article and it's just a quote from her lawyer! lastly, there's a little picture of jewel on the cover of just for teens magazine and beneath it says "jewel made it through, can you?" or something like that. anyway i just wanted to say i'm really happy to be a part of the eda's. and to the person with the screen name "jewelfan22" -- sorry! i'll be changing my name soon. didn't know it was taken! adios for now -joe your one constant star angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 01:37:07 -0200 From: Sue Harrison Subject: Let's build our future! Hi everyone. I've only been an EDA for maybe 2 months now. I read Rebecca's post and she was so upset thinking that the Vets of the list are putting us new EDA's down.....like we add water to their flame or something. Well Rebecca, to tell you the truth, I felt the same way at first. I felt that it was implied that things were so much better before the list got so much bigger. Then Alan posted "I have Zero interest in recapturing the past. That is definitely NOT part of my hopeful vision for the EDAs. I'm only interested in how to improve the future". This made me feel better......thanks Alan. Maybe we (the New Angels) can find a common ground with the Vet Angels. We should try organizing some sort of get-together. I think it would be great to have some sort of annual EDA induction ceremony!! Not only would it make the New Angels feel accepted.....it would bring lots of EDA's together. We could have a blast! I live in NJ. I think it would be cool if we could have someone "in charge" for different regions of the country to organize something like this. It would be so much fun. Think about it.....Vets and New Angels...... Watcha's think??? I'd be really happy to get involved in some sort of activity with fellow EDA's. I'm sure we'd all get a lot out of it. Later, Sue **the God loving angel** aka **guitar strummin' angel** AM I ALLOWED TO USE 2 EDA NAMES?????? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 23:22:01 PST From: "alex smith" Subject: Anglefood down under Hay Angles, I was wondering if there was any anglefood from jewels ozzy tour in circulation yet. If so could you let me know, i would love to get my hands on some and if there is anyone in australia with any other anglefood well that would be a bonus. Thanks heaps Alex ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 23:39:35 -0800 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Re: EDAs are EDAs -- vets are animal doctors just so I'm not misunderstood, I agree -- those "vets" I've met, are great. Thing is, discussions about how the list has changed is creating a sense for those newer folks, that they are somehow less than those who've been around longer, even if that's not intended by some of the "vets". some new members to the list -- who aren't at all being disrespectul of other folks -- feel alienated, or like they're considered less worthy somehow because they're not "vets" -- even though that may not be the intent of discussions, it's making people feel that way I do think it's only a real small number who consider time on the list to be a big deal or a status symbol, but I don't like to see anyone alienated, and some people feel like that way. so, I was just thinkin' that maybe we could do away with the term so as to make everyone feel better... BTW, I think the discussion on this list in recent days has been the most honest and interesting in a while... and, being un-moderated, people have not been going crazy Note from the list owner - This list is still moderated....I do not want this last line to confuse anyone on that. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 10:51:27 From: Nat Subject: Re[2]: EDAs are EDAs -- vets are animal doctors > I was just thinkin' that maybe we could >do away with the term so as to make everyone feel better... "Vets" is just a word, without the connotations behind it, it means nothing. To make people feel better, people who *do* think they are somehow more entitled to this list or are bigger Jewel fans should adjust their thinking, as well as those who, including myself, think some "vets" are being elitest. I guess it is a platitude, but everyone is capable of changing their ideas, and if people try, the word "vet" can just refer to the lovely people who helped create a wonderful list. It isn't the term we should do away with, but the negative meanings we associate with it. And I felt, and feel it too. Whether it is a conscious thing or not (and I learn towards the latter), the fact is, some list members are making new members feel like they're an unwanted burden. Almost all the posts have included some allusion to original members leaving as the list has grown in numbers. That implies that the list was better before all the new people joined. Now I don't really think that is what they are meaning to imply. Truthfully speaking, it is much easier to create a community atmosphere when you have less people to deal with. But that cannot happen, and there is no point dwelling on the idea of lesser numbers. To wish for Jewel to have *less* fans is an extremely negative and futile desire. People don't have to lose credibility just because they're, god forbid, "popular". Growth in a community can be just as enjoyable as when it was small. You have more thoughts, more imput, more creativity, more intelligence, more positivity. You have the opportunity to connect with many more people, and a wider range of people at that. It can seem that some EDA'S want to keep Jewel as their own private little American coffee house singer, out of reach from the rest of the world. Surely that is not what being an Everyday Angel is about! It is a GOOD thing that the list has grown. But all good things can be suffocated if people ignore the benefits and concentrate on recapturing a past that cannot exist on the same level as it did before. You want closeness? You want discussion? You want to share? All of that can happen on a large list, and defeatist attitudes, abandoning the list and huffing over the new members will only stifle the potential. >Then Alan posted "I have Zero interest in recapturing the past. Instead of just organising something in different regions of the US, lets organise get togethers in ALL countries. Foreign Jewel fans have missed out on a lot, and now we have the opportunity to join in. So lets do something. By then there was a lot of mails coming through the list with just SJC (some jewel content) or NJC (No Jewel Content) and I loved most of them, people telling about their lives, their problems, asking for help and also a lot of info about other artists and Jewel gatherings. Then the EDA-thoughts list was founded... I imidiately joined and read every single poem.... not that I posted often, but loved most of the stuff I received in my mailbox... I might be one of the few people who has joined almost every EDA list, but it becomes more and more differcult to post the replies a to the right list... that is mostly bause I filter every message from *@smoe.org to one folder, but that is because all these messages are related, and when something is going on on one list you often hear little additions on others so this makes it easier to get all the info. Having said all of this I can only agree with what Alan said... and I always welcomed his information on other artists and events... And I've mailed him about it more than once. Even discussed some stuff with him privately, and I must say thet I must praise his devotion to the list too, even though it is less than it used to be, but now most of the info can be found on the Jewel webpage on which he also does a great job. I'd like to end this message by thanking both Mike and Alan for their time and help. This wouldn't be possible without you guys.... And I sincerely hope that someone will be able to help you if it is neccesairy... I for one would really like to help anywhere I can. I think he and I have agreed to Disagree... But during our 'debate' I think he and I proved why the list should be moderated on most levels... But before I jump into this little monologue, I have to comment... I too was getting bored with the list in many respects.. the same issue had been discussed since November, and it was getting old!!! But between Alan's "Future of the EDA's" post and Sean's "Jewel a hypocrite for playing Singapore" post things have changed... new EDA's are posting, so are the old salts..(someone mentioned that they did not care for the term "vet"..) With Alan's post we all have begun to discuss the list itself.... the actual behind the scenes mechanics our little community... We started out as a small hamlet, and slowly grew from there... Everybody knew everybody, and the common theme was to help your neighbor... Well, our town grew. More people started packing up and moving out here to enjoy the scenery and the companionship of such a close knit community... and it continued to grow, until we ended up with our little metropolis... Of course, now not everybody knows everybody, and people seem to group up into diffrent neighborhoods.. which is fine... People get together outside of the list and discuss things.. it is great that we have so many people... It brings diversity to the list, and allows everyone to see so many different views..... We are still a community, we only grew in size... Instead of everyone meeting in the town square to chat and gossip; a few people collect at a friend's house to hang out and chat... But when there is a town meeting everyone tends to be there in one way or another... For example.. the posts had been fairly few (less than around 20 a day.. I cannot be exact, since I check it too many times a day) but after Alan's "future" post and Sean's "Singapore" post I had over 45 posts the next morning... which brings me to the next point... Sean and I proved why moderation is necessary.. Many of us do not stop and reread what we have written before we post.. We should... A major concern should be "How will this be received.. will I alienate somebody? enrage them, be made a fool of?..." Often we feel quite passionate about something and we write what we think conveys our feeling best... but often it is rather acidic (to borrow a term..) We do not realize this because we feel strongly about the issue.. So we hit the "send mail" key... And that is where Our friend Mike comes in... he reads our nasty posts, and says "WHOA!!! I don't think so Tim (or Rowdy, Bob, Leroy, Ahab, Ishmail.. etc..)" And he will shoot it down, often letting us know that perhaps we should tone it down somewhat... Sean and I proved why this is a valid point... He and I both had posts shot down and with good reason.. I do not know, but I am sure he got a bit of flack for his Singapore post, as did I for my reply (about bringing the cane to the U.S.) BUT.. If Mike had let our posts go through the way we originally wrote them, Sean and I both would have been hunted down in the streets by a angry mob of villagers wielding torches and pitchforks, not unlike karloff.. people will be people. If we could all be little "flower children" and be mature about what we post, I think we could slacken up on moderation somewhat.... But we will never be able to do that.... No one's sense of "what is okay" is the same..... what I may consider art, someone else may consider a crime against nature... So, really there is little reason to discuss this anyway.. we need moderation...( now perhaps we could discuss making a digest of un moderated posts, but that is Mike's gig, not mine) As for censorship.... Not hardly... This is not a newspaper... This wonderful community is the love-child of Mike.. He has dedicated alot of time to the EDA's (if not for this list, He could be working on his master's degree for polka dancing!!) Really, though when we post, we are not posting to a newspaper, we are emailing Mike, and if he agrees, he shares it with the community... It is his list, his choice, and from what I have seen he has been quite fair (heck, he shoots down about 65% of my posts!!) And I think he has done a decent job, since I can be offensive about 67% of the time... Anyway, the blurb for this post reads like this: Enjoy the list as it is.... If you want it to be better, then "Be the Difference that makes a Difference.." in other words, get off your butt and come up with some ideas that would make the list better and let Mike know... The EDA's are a work in progress.. everyone that posts leave their mark on it forever, so Be kind to one another..... Next, For all of the "Founding Fathers" of this community.... yes it is not a hamlet anymore.... we have mini-malls and tanning salons, but enjoy it.. Modern convience is nice... as for your new neighbor you just moved to the list, be kind.. and remember, once upon a time, you were new to everyone else too.... Newbies.. I've heard that we used to have "EDA parents" to ease the pain of being a new member.. i think that practice has gone the way of the Dodo though, but suggest it if you like it, and maybe one of the old salts will take you under their wing and make you feel welcome... and please newcomers, come join in our reindeer games!!!!!! take care..
