I joined the list on May 23, 1997.. Jewel's birthday I believe.. it's almost been 2 years. Back then I read every single post and enjoyed the conversations that went on and the introduction to new music (I'm still a huge fan of Tara MacLeans and many other performers). But now, as I've seen other people write, I don't read the list as much. As a matter of fact I'm beginning to lose interest in it and i delete most of the mail. I don't want that to be. I miss the old list but there's no "going back" because the numbers have increased largely and there are a lot more people online. I just want to say through all estrangements and mishaps and even good things that came out of this list, I'm still staying because I love the spirit of the EDAs and the meaning. And I know it's still out there through the shallow layer that's sitting on top. You know what I mean.. that layer of "no" Well take care everyone. If you want to write me back, please do, I love mail, I don't get much from you guys anymore.. *hugs* - -Linda the Lovable Angel BenderGrrl, PixieNJHC, and RiOtGrrLnj@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 01:14:16 GMT From: "Everything Breaks" Subject: us jewel bits as mike mentioned, jewel is in the new us magazine (#255, apr 99, dylan mcdermott on cover).. there are two bits on her.. first, the one from the 'ask us' feature: q: i look forward to seeing jewel in ang lee's 'ride with the devil.' has she had any previous acting experience? larry loiello, new york a: jewel, 24, studied drama at michigan's interlochen arts academy. she made her professional acting debut in 1995, as dorothy in tnt's the wizard of oz in concert. despite her limited acting experience, director lee was impressed with the singer's portrayal of a feisty confederate bride in his upcoming civil war epic, co-starring skeet ulrich. ::there's a headshot of jewel accompanying the question:: the second is from the magnificent 7 feature of seven sex symbols in hollywood.. it's accompanied by a photo from the rolling stone shoot, the one where she's on her horse, but she's laying down and smiling.. #2 jewel - "i am told/i am adored by millions," writes jewel in her best-selling 1998 collection of poetry, 'a night without armor,' "but no one calls." that's hard to believe. for years now, in hits like "you were meant for me," from her 10-million-selling 1995 debut album, 'pieces of you,' and in poems like "the bony ribs of adam" ("how my belly/hollows and aches/craving seed/craving kisses"), the 24-year-old arctic fox has been coming on like a phone-sex advertisement. in article after article, she has talked of community saunas on her family's homestead in homer, alaska, and of parrying passes from old guys when she performed bar gigs as a teen-ager with her father, atz kilcher, a musician and social worker, (her mother, nedra carroll, who divorced jewel's father when jewel was 8, is now her manager.) but things are cooling off a bit for the folk schwinger. jewel seems to be sttling into a relationship with chris douglas, a rodeo cowboy and former soap actor, and her current album, 'spirit,' is, indeed, more spiritual. this year jewel's fans can look forward to another book (according to its publisher, harper collins, it comprises "journal entires, poems, essays and stories") and her film-acting debut, in 'ride with the devil,' directed by ang lee ('the ice storm'). she plays a civil war-era farm widow courted by desperadoes skeet ulrich and tobey mcguire. according to lee, jewel's physical sts figure in her performance. (explanation below) This is the regular Jeopardy, not the Rock And Roll Jeopardy that's on MTV. Check your local listings for air time... Mike :-) From Barry (HRENB@aol.com): whats up halo heads well, my big Jeopardy week has finally arrived. I posted a few months back about this but some people wanted a reminder. Ill be on wednesday (st. pats day) and thursday. Thursday is the day Alex Trebek asked me about the EDAs on the little bio segment unfortunately it is also the day I lose! but at least I was champ for a day and I won a few bucks. Anyways remember, I was nervous and pretty spacey with the cameras rolling and I don't even remember what I said - so don't yell if its goofy or whatever! I havent been posting lately because I don't have a computer again right now but will get one soon. Actually I don't think I've been missing too much- it seems like there are tons of posts and not really that much going on lately, hopefully when the US tour comes around the posts will get a bit meatier. Lastly- to the person who was thinking about getting Steve Poltz's One Left Shoe- get it- its great- especially if you like old school simplistic folk songs (POYish). Hey EDA's, This is a site definitely worth checking out. It's got some nice pictures of Jewel in Ride With the Devil, pictures of the cast, as well as the list of the cast and crew, a review of the movie and the best part, a 60 second clip from the movie! Granted, the clip has no sound, but at least you can (kinda) see it right? The clip has plenty of shots with Jewel in it, including the infamous "breast feeding scene". Need not worry, as Mr.BB said before, the scene is tastefully done (although a somewhat close shot) and does not reveal anything of any sort. So, to all you angels who have RealPlayer, go check out the clip! For those of you who don't have RealPlayer, at least you have all the other goodies :) http://www.darkhorizons.com/1999/RideWithTheDevil.htm Enjoy, Melissa the angel who hates to drive. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 19:06:03 -0800 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: EDAs are EDAs -- vets are animal doctors just in case people don't get to the bottom of my last, lengthier, post -- Rebecca's touched me as a reminder of how elitist, and exclusionary, the term "vet" can seem; there may only be a tiny handful of EDAs who actually present themselves as somehow being superior because of how long they've been on this list; but the continual tossing around of the word when discussing how things have changed or worsened, can be hurtful; every individual is equal, whether they joined today or before Jewel learned to yodel :) ; vets are animal doctors... in the cause of kindness, maybe the divisive use of the word on this list can be reconsidered or entirely abandoned ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 18:50:49 -0800 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Re: Future of the List Hi EDAs -- reading a post like Sarah's (and other heartfelt messages that have appeared in recent days) is what has made this list a worthwhile place to be for me, Jewel and her art has played a big part in me giving up my job of 18 years to devote my life to music -- I'm not really a player myself, but I'm putting on concerts, promoting events, and doing my best to encourage young musicians who don't have as many opportunities to develop, play live, be taken seriously etc. It was through this list, observing the birth of the EDA Foundation, that the inspiration came to me to create a non-profit society here in Canada -- TSUNAMI (The Society for Unsung New Art and Music Innovators) -- that has sponsored more than a half dozen concerts so far, featuring over 30 different musicians, and touching hundreds of lives. Here on the island where I live, musicians old and young are excited by the chances to work together, and teenagers, who can't play in the licensed clubs and bars, are now performing, learning and growing, before the community -- having a chance to develop outside the opportunities provided by school assemblies, concerts and dances. About 6 - 8 young artists -- in genres from pop-folk, to jazz and soul -- who've been part of earlier shows are now encouraged and experienced enough that, later this month, they're producing their own concert. And to think a mail list has had a profound effect on so many lives... A lot of the people I'm now dealing with have been inspired by Jewel as have all of us here. As Sarah's eloquent post concluded: 'So, if anyone actually reads this or not, that's fine with me. My opinion is no more important than anyone else's. But I think the one thing most people need to think about is why they liked jewel in the first place. why they have been on this list for a multiple number of years. I can't answer that myself very well, but I know there is something cool about the people who have come together in appreciation for what Jewel was. She inspired me to play guitar, which has become a defining point of my life. And maybe that Jewel doesn't exist anymore. But maybe it's that whoever you were when you first liked Jewel, that person, doesn't exist anymore. Everything changes. It's not about moderated or unmoderated. "Innocence can't be lost, it just needs to be maintained," right? Or "We are everyday angels, be careful with me cause I'd like to stay that way." Or "Do you hate me because I'm pieces of you?" Pick a quote, start clumsily strumming YWMFM on your guitar, and stop reading this post which has become rather too long. I'm going to go steal some food from the cynics (sean hooks?) and give it to everybody that has some faith. yes, kids, I just think the list's innocence has rightfully been lost. I thought things got better with age? blue cheese does, at least, I suppose.' two final thoughts (before I catch a plane to Texas -- yeehawww!): - - the term "vet" should only be applied to those people who take care of animals when in need; in the context of this list it creates a divide that shouldn't be - - if anyone from MTV's not exactly laid-back security dept. was reading Sarah's post -- just think of it as being that those photos of Jewel are just on permanent loan from your art dept. :) slean leat, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 19:46:32 PST From: "Karen Boysen" Subject: Re: The Future of The EDAs Well I've some of the posts about this subject, including Sean's. Now I"m not considered a veteran either although I'm not sure who, when, or where they decided to draw the line on that. Never the less I"m sure I didnt' make the cut. Now when Sean recalls the "old" days on the list and how much better they were, I can't help but feeling unwanted. I"m not sure if he is trying to make it seem this way or if it's just me. Because it seems as though everyone that matters or who he thinks matters which would be the "veterans" don't want anyone else on the list but themselves. Well, things change and not always for the better I admit but they're not always for the worse either. This really has no big point to make except it seems as though sean wants to exclude those who joined post jewelstock by being selfish and making us feel unwanted. just my thoughts, Karen We Are Everyday Angels - Jewel Kilcher ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 22:03:36 -0800 From: scott e sykes Subject: Re: EDAs are EDAs -- vets are animal doctors (and Shawn Mullins list!) Big Sexy Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 23:56:58 -0500 From: Greg Dunn Subject: The list & the EDAs It's great to see all the discussion here, spurring comments from a lot of the long-time members (and reopening some gentle back-and-forth between old "adversaries"). I guess I count as one of the old-timers. I joined this list a little more than 4 years ago, only days after the release of Jewel's first album, after being clued in from another list I was on. Within months, I had made a large number of online friends, with whom I could share my opinions of Jewel's album and ultimately the concert reviews. Ah, those days, when a casual comment to an acquaintance about this up-and-coming talent would yield a blank stare, and the response to a casually-presented track off one of the Angelfood tapes would generate manic enthusiasm... Funnily enough, I was a member of this list well over a year before I had a real opportunity to meet several of my fellow EDAs in the flesh. That opportunity, however, was a blockbuster -- the fabled JewelStock. A very chaotic three days, where I got to meet, in the flesh, the people who went with the names of Dan Stark, Liz & Shelly, Rachel Martin, Steve Ito, Mike Connell, and many others. A true awakening, which was only intensified when 30 of us crashed Liz's 16th birthday party the following February, and reaffirmed that there was something more than Jewel which linked us all together. A feeling which I have experienced again and again, whether it be a Rugburns concert in Toledo, LRTs near and far, or an out-of-the-blue meeting in Austin TX which mellowed an otherwise stressful three months away from home... For me, the EDAs are at their best when a group of them gets together. Whether shouting themselves hoarse at a Saturday night broomball game, picking up litter on a beach, or just hanging out to talk and become friends, there is magic in the gathering (pun not intended). While many of us have drifted away, and the special occasions like JewelStock may never again achieve that critical mass, I still cherish the friends I have met through the list, and the new people I have met through list activities. Old friends Liz, Tessa, Dan, Tim, and especially Duff, all of whom I still see occasionally; new friends with names like Cindy Lee, Elizabeth, Lisa and Joy, who have been wonderful guests at my house... even those I have yet to meet, but still hope to cross paths with someday. Every get-together brings back some of the wonderful memories. So what am I saying? I guess that the thing which best personifies the EDA spirit is a gathering. A party, a concert, whatever. We need more of them. One LRT per home per year is kind of a poor substitute for the community spirit that was so much fun in 1996 and 1997, but it's a good start. More concerts! More campouts! More birthday parties! :-) We did this back in 1997, but most of the nearby people who could attend are now a lot further away. Still, I'd like to propose that aynone in the Central Indiana area get in touch with me (privately!) and let me know if you'd like to get together for a party. As an incentive, my daughter and her rock band (check out http://www.spvi.com/ChuckMarten/) play fairly frequent concerts around here, and it would be great to have a few EDAs show up to make the audience louder. We have limited crash space too, for those who can't drive all that distance and home in one day. Let's hear about it! Maybe we can schedule something to bring back some of the EDA spirit, this Spring or surely by Summer.
