I think firstly, it would be of some benefit for everyone to consider why they joined the list in the first place. I would imagine, that most people's motive would be a simple one, to meet other Jewel fans, to become part of a community with similar interests. I personally joined for those reasons, not because I wanted to read and write strictly about Jewel but because I wanted to become involved with people who had the same immediate interests as me (that being Jewel) but also have the same broad interests; kindness, help for those who need it, intelligent, thoughtful discussions, and so on. If I, or anyone else wanted just news, there are the millions of websites, and even newsgroups. Shouldn't this one be *more* than that, it seems to have been such a thing in the past. To cater for the minority who may only want Jewel content, is to deny the majority who want to share and recieve a whole lot more than just "When is her new single out". Although I'm new to this list, I have run one of my own for 2 1/2 years. It is not as high volume as this one, but it does have 750 vocal subscribers. Why is this relevant? Well the community of fans involved are quite similar to Jewel fans. During the years I've run the list (not through a server, but compiling it manually into a digest every night), I've left it completely unmoderated. It has thrived that way, and it is the best way to develop a close community of fans. We've had our fair share of flames and fights and lengthy discussions, even similar to the ones on here (the new (artist( versus the old (artist)) and it is a success because discussions could flow freely, without tight, constraining rules. You become close that way. We've reached a healthy equilibrium between on and off topic posts...naturally. It'll happen this way on this list too if given the chance. Basically, there is already a news list for people who want Jewel content only, there is a digest for people who don't want a lot of mail, and there is the option of leaving, for those who don't wish for any of it. Shouldn't new subscribers be given the chance to form the same, seemingly close knit friendships through this list as the veterans have? As a list owner myself, I would seriously recommend allowing free flowing discussions, with rules imposed upon the basics - no flames, no usless, unsubstantiated insults directed at Jewel, and no one liner "I agree" posts. Other than that, surely a more relaxed forum wouldn't result in 500 posts a day. The solution seems pretty simple to me. Nat ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 00:57:16 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: Jewel a hypocrite for playing Singapore For those of you who do not know, the country of Singapore is basically a police state that back in 1994 tortured, flogged, caned, and whipped an American citizen named Michael Fay, who was a teenager at the time, for petty vandalism. The young man is a victim of this country's horrific, liberty-less policies and still feels the physical and emotional scars of his victimization to this day. It was a shocking abuse of civil rights and to this day Singapore continues to use corporal punishment and caning against those who commit marginal crimes, crimes that in the United States or any other developed nation would at worst result in a fine and some community service and maybe some probation, not even jail time. The poor, unemployed, and working class are routinely subjected to such dehumanization and violence at the hands of the Singapore government. I feel that for Jewel to play shows in such a place is nothign short of an outrage and it seems to stand against and contradict everything she stands for in her music and her efforts through Habitat for Humanity and other such endeavors. The country of Singapore is the polar opposite of humanity, they are a land dictated by inhumanity, a country that treats people more like animals than free human beings. Now, yes, I call Jewel a hypocrite in the subject of this letter but perhaps she is not aware of the conditions that prevail in that country. If so, she should be so apprised in which case she is not such a hypocrite after all, but instead perhaps just a little ignorant of politics and such. Which is prob'ly a good idea in some ways, but then again, ignorance is never bliss. Bare in mind that the PEOPLE there are not the government, and not guilty of the crimes you mention. Surely the Jewel fans there should not be *punished* or denied because of their government. I have quite a few friends there, and all of them opposed the particular case you mentioned, and all of them are excited to see Jewel. By your logic, they should be denied to see Jewel because of the governments ideology? (sorry if that sounds confrontational, it isn't mean to) All countries have been guilty of such crimes against humanity in the past, and it is *almost* always the action of the government at fault, not the individual people. Should she not play in Germany because of their Nazi history? Should she not play in Australia because of the past genocide against aboriginals? I could go on and on with cases. She is not being a hypocrite by playing in a country with people in it who perhaps, *need* to hear her optimism, and pleas for kindness. I would find her a hypcrite if she ignored certain fans because of the country they happened to be in. Nat The Classical Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 02:23:41 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: What this list has become. Alan's post. Mike. Censorship. Jewel. Etc. Want to get in on this one early I guess. First, Alan's post. In my opinion a very verbose way of saying very diplomatically and in his humanitarian, altruistic way-"Censorship is bad." I agree with you Alan. I don't think that is what dilluted the quality of this list. What diluted the quality of this list is quite simply Jewel's popularity. Mike was just doing what he had to do for himself to prevent himself from working hours and hours a day on bounced posts, illegal posts, inanities, flaming, etc. When Jewel became a top 40 radio star and cover girl etc that is what killed the list because it became inundated with people. It's that simple. Size. Quantity. The list became big. Something this large cannot be intimimate and filled with poetry and laughs and recommendations or other artists and communal atmosphere. It just isn't possible. We once were a nice, little coffee house in the Village full with great food and drink, enlightening conversation, regulars(list vets), performers, discussion, etc. But at some point we became Starbucks. An overpopulated brand name, a congregational spot overcrowded with unfamiliar people taking up space and bogging down intelligent discussion. And you know what? The coffee suffered. What was once flavorful and vibrant became dull and bland. Censorship and moderation narrowed topics down. List vets jumped ship to the digest or just left completely. You weren't allowed to curse or even talk of something remotely contraversial because it would create too much work for Mike. And again, I understand his side. I wouldn't want all that on my shoulders either. Oh, and lastly. Does anyone think Jewel gives a rat's ass about this list? OR ever did? Now before you jump on me for this one be reminded that this is something Alan(Mr BB) has told us all numerous times. How we are such a small part of her fan base, etc. She never finished answering our questions(remember those) that we put so much time and discussion and work into, and the ones she did answer were short, clipped answers, looked like she put two seconds of thought into it. That whole big, you write the Down So Long video thing was a disaster. We may have at one time served a purpose, had a use to Jewel in her quest to become a self-subsisting musician, but once you are selling platinum records and selling out amphitheaters, a little internet discussion list doesn't mean a whole lot to you. Not since Hiranya's days has there been any serious interaction from Jewel(and what is now the J-team, her publicity/damage control department). Hope I am wrong about that and someday Jewel gives us another Jewelstock. But I want that for selfish reasons, just as I am sure Jewel used us for her own reasons and, let's fess up to is, no longer needs us if she ever did. Now, this has not been a negative post, just an honest one. I still respect most of Jewel's music even as she slips away from us, the hardcore fans who know all the words to Louisa and her Blue Guitar and Nicotine Love, et al. So this is not an anti-Jewel thing. Even Spirit has its truly wonderful moments, though most are tainted by overproduction, something like Do You is one of her finest written songs ever by far. So I've rambled on long enough. Tell me what yous think. Oh, and read my Singapore post, Mike promised me he would send it out, it is censored no more. It's really a hell of a lot more important than this one. Oh, and I predicted this all a long time ago. Just wanted to try to get some of you to be all angry at me for decrying Jewel's popularity like you did in the old days. Hmm, nobody really seems to do that anymore, maybe I was right after all....... Later, Sean Hooks "I'm just calling, one last time, not to change your mind, but just to say I miss you babe, good luck, good bye." - -Bruce Springsteen (Speaking for myself I feel we are all trying to cope with losing something, the intimacy of Jewel's music, the intimacy of this list, whatever. I think Alan's post sparked a lot of things that are all reminiscences of the past. We have to say goodbye to that, to Old Jewel(god how I miss her), to the Old List(alas it is no more), and just send it off to college, away from home, to be its own entity. We can't change it anymore. We can't go back to how it was no matter how much we want to. Now if that isn't a microcosm of life, the loss of youth, the pain of aging, I don't know what is.) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 01:58:19 -0800 From: Rowdy A White Subject: NJC Re: Singapore 'ello Well, I have not been to Singapore, so I cannot not really judge, but I've heard that the crime rate is incredibly low... and with good reason... We Americans are soft in many ways... And we assume that the rest of the world should live like us.. (How many times have you heard "I am a American citizen, I Have rights!!") In some respects, i would like to see the U.S. borrow the punishment ideas from other countries.. (Would any of you litter the Highways, or paint building walls if you knew there was a great chance of having the skin flayed from your "Bottom Cheeks"?) For added benefit, how about taping the use of the cane and showing the film in Juvenile detention centers across America? I am sure that I will get more than a few mails against this idea... But please look at a few ideas... Our war on crime is failing.. Our jails our overcrowded, and our tax money is just being spent on more.. (About Prisons... Here in Texas we have State Prisons on every street corner... no really, There are 6 state prisons within 100 miles of my house..) And our war on drugs? Failure in most areas..... So, how about this: for minor offenses (minor drug charges, petty crimes..etc) still levy a heavy fine, and a couple of swift hits with the cane.... For Drugs? How about 10 swats for every misdemeanor count.. and a heavy fine.... Leave the prisons for real crime(and give a few swats there too..)... Now I am sure many of you are screaming "Cruel and unusual Punishment!" at the computer screen.. And I am sorry.. I do not think use of the cane fits that description.... excessively perhaps.... but with proper use it could be a very useful tool..... As a child and early teen I had my butt busted with just about everything (my father preferred a thin slat of wood with holes in it..I bled more than a few times.. mainly because I was a little hellion) And I think I've turned out alright... - ------ As for Michael Fay, he was a visitor in another country, and broke their laws.. And he should have been prepared to face the consequences.. During that entire ordeal I was shamed to be an American.. For some reason we think we are above the law in other places.. I guess I need to step down off the soap box.... PS perhaps the first thing that we need to use the cane against is the blatant abusers of plywood animals!! Roping plywood animal is not a viable solution to relieving stress... I had been a fan for quite a while. I know I missed out on being a part of the 'old' list, but from what I have seen, the list has changed. I used to read every message and reply to many. Nowadays I just skim thru the list until something stands out. And about moderation vs free speech. I think the last test shows we're a bit immature and we need someone to filter the list for us. A few new calendar entries on the future calendar & news from Australia including photos from the "Free Spirit" cruise in Sydney earlier this week. (See headline news area. New photos under the news blurb.) While you're visiting the "news" area at the site, click over to our "featured artist" department where Steve Poltz is now currently featured. Also, I've recieved a bunch of questions about a rumor that Steve Poltz is leaving the tour. NOT TRUE! During some break time during Jewel's tour, Steve will return to Australia to do some solo dates, but he is not leaving the tour & will be on board through the Asian & European swings. We'll also soon have the setlists & fan reviews of the Australian tour on the site for your enjoyment. Please keep posting those concert reviews (& cc them to me). We only have a few & would like to feature one for each gig on the tour. We're also revamping the JewelStore to make it more user friendly & several new items (including the songbooks) will be up soon. Visit Jewel's site for the latest accurate info at: www.jeweljk.com And finally, because this probably got buried in the current onslaught of mail, here's a repost about the first Higher Ground For Humanity workshop. We want 10 EDAs who attend High School in San Diego to join us. Read on for details & instructions. Hello to any EDAs that attend High School in the San Diego area, Jewel & Nedra's humanitarian foundation Higher Ground For Humanity will soon begin the first in a series of workshops geared toward focusing the concepts & projects that they will pursue. We would like to create a "High School Advisory Board" & we'd very much appreciate having YOU participate in this! What we're looking for over the next few days is 8 to 10 EDAs who attend High School in San Diego, that would enjoy particpating in this first workshop. The workshop will take place most likely on Friday March 19th (after school hours at 4:00PM) in the Mira Mesa area & costs you nothing other than time & serious thought about: "Being The Difference That Makes A Difference". We'd like to invite 4 to 5 male EDAs & 4 to 5 female EDAs (who attend High School in San Diego) & are available to attend & participate in this workshop. If you would like to be considered for an invitation to this first HGH workshop, please send me the following information as soon as possible: Name: Age: Sex: Email Adress: home phone number: home address: High School you attend: Briefly tell us why you'd enjoy being included. PLEASE put "HGH Workshop" in the subject line of your reply so I can see it easily amongst all my email.
