[jenni] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 01:43:18 EST From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: NJC: Baring my soul about bears and beer... ***Jenni posted a question that probably had to be asked (sooner or later): >2) At the end of Jewelstock she said "take care of >your purple teddies." What does that mean? ***Mike Connel then answered: >Ever seen any pictures online from JewelStock where >Jewel is planting a wet one on a stuffed purple teddy bear? >(His name was Fuzzy). One of the EDAs who attended >(Robb Leigh) brought a purple teddy bear that pretty much >became the co-mascot at JewelStock (Dennis Harris was >the other co-mascot). >Well, anyway....Jewel "met" Fuzzy and made many of the >male EDAs at JewelStock jealous of the critter by giving >him a smooch. Well, that's Mike's version! Here's what really happened: On a hot rumor that Jewel often slept in a short purple teddy, we made an EDA pact at JewelStock to ALL wear short purple teddies to the show. Duly impressed by an audience of 300 dressed as such, Jewel made that comment in hopes that the less fabric-savvy amongst us wouldn't ruin our sleepwear once we returned home with a senseless hot water/cotton wash cycle or two... Since then, we always wear purple teddies when we get together (ie, the Java Joe's Pajama Jam EDA Sleepover immortalized on Future Folklore Volume #3). *ahem* Okay, as the "other JewelStock co-mascot" I can't lie to you. Yes, Robb brought a purple Grateful Dead Teddy Bear to JewelStock, and yes, the damn critter sat on the stage both nights, and yes, he crowd surfed. And yes, HE got the passionate french kiss from Jewel. *arggh* But he was unbearable! He hogged photo opps with Jewel, and although SHE liked him a lot, we had to ban the hairball from all future EDA gatherings. This story has a dark side, however. One that many of us would rather forget, but hey, what's this list for if not for the occassional heartfelt confession? The very next year, at the Bearsville '97 EDA campout (ironically commemorating the JewelStock weekend), a fatal tragedy occurred. Tom Proven, my faithful Harris sidekick Chris and I heard noises outside my tent. Rummaging through our cooler was a wild animal! Heroically, we all three beat the beast into submission with wiffle ball bats and saved the beer. Alas, lantern light brought the horrific realization that we had caught long-lost Fuzzy stealing a diet root beer! Well, we felt REALLY bad, so we nailed Fuzzy to a tree in the camp so he could at least be a part of the weekend festivities. I have pondered the events of that weekend many times since. Had that poor bear wandered the Bearsville woods for a full year, in a desperate, ill-fated attempt to be with Jewel? Could we have tempered our reactions at the cooler (ie, could cooler heads have prevailed)? *doh* But, spare the bear, spoil the beer? I think not! ;-) We have unretouched photos to prove this story, so there's no sense in anyone denying it! Everyone at Bearsville '97 was an accomplice, I suppose. But for God's sake, DON'T tell Jewel, I doubt she'd understand (what with her intolerance of senseless violence)... Dennis (man, I feel better getting THAT off my chest) Harris All True-Tales As Told By Harris (tm) are 100% guaranteed to contain a kernal of truth. Remember, truth is always stranger than fiction, and usually somewhat amusing! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 21:23:08 EST From: BRONCOBAND@aol.com Subject: NJC: Learning Guitar Hi everyone. Sorry to disturb you over this, but I am in need of some help. You see, I am attempting to teach myself to play the guitar and it just "ain't" workin'. I can't afford lessons, but I really want to learn, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips. I have a chord book and a method book. Some problems I am having are...well...everything, so if you think you could tell me something that would help, I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks for your time. Happy, happy day everyone, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 22:11:47 EST From: nyky d Subject: NJC:hate crimes Hey, I am a new member to the list. I used to be on a long time ago, and remember some of the stuff. I mainly remember how compassionate everyone is. So, in saying this, i want to ask a favor... I need you guys to give me some input... I witnessed a hate crime today, and it tore me up. A boy in a wheelchair was pushed 10 yards into a wooden bench. The guys who did it were our star athletes, so the coaches did NOTHING about it, but I went to the principal. I have been a big person on causes, and recently took up the cause of Hate Crimes. Seeing this today, then seeing them laugh, knowing they represented our school, it made me think... I have to get on the ball. I am starting an organization called the H.C.A. (name subject to change) I was wondering if anyone had any info or input on any of this.... Thanks... oh, yeah, and if naveen rao is still on here, i wanted to thank you for the post back in june of 97 on the topic of friendship. I went thru and personally removed all dead links. Also notable is the new "Angelfood Sites" section for those of you who have lists of your Jewel Angelfood online. Simply add the URL which points directly to your list of tapes and I'll add it to the list. http://www.endor.org/jewel/links.html Also currently still in progress is the Audio/Video Music Central replacing the Angelfood Circle page. Unfortunately it is still in it's infancy stage due to the fact that I was gone for a month. I will be working on it and hopefully getting it completed soon. The reason for the name change is that it will handle any musical recording artist, not just Jewel. As usual, check out my jewel page at http://www.endor.org/jewel If you keep having trouble searching for lyrics or guitar tabs, stop by my page and check out that section of it. If by chance you have a song that I don't, PLEASE e-mail me and I'll add it to the site so others can have access to it. Thanks, Gerrit ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 17:01:40 -0500 From: "The Whites" Subject: Woe to Live on Sample Hey Everyone! I was on one of my favorite web sites today, and I found a sample of "Woe to Live On." To find it go to http://www.missourireview.org/fiction/. It's the first one on the page, enjoy! Bryan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 17:53:12 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel list subscribers - if the list volume is too much, try Jewel-digest Hi folks :-) It's been a while since this been publicized....but I wanted to ensure that all subscribers to the loose mail version of this list (you get all posts to the list as *individual* emails) that we have a digest version that includes each and every one of those mails, but you get them in one email which contains about 20 of the emails on the average. Thus you'd get 2 or 3 large emails a day, rather than 30 to 60 individual emails. Many folks prefer this version, as we have 1,100 subscribers on it, versus about 650 on loose mail. Also, we have a news list that has only the newsy posts from the loose mail version, and that list has maybe 10 to 20 emails a week. (There are 1,300 subscribers on Jewel-news) A popular subscription method is to subscribe to both Jewel-digest and Jewel-news at the same time, thus you can read the digests when you have the time, but still get the NEWS emails about Jewel and certain EDA projects and/or major gatherings/LRTs individually....and you might not miss out on late breaking news of a TV appearance or a project involving Jewel and the EDAs. I am mentioning all of this as it is a certainty that the list mail will increase in volume soon as it always does when Jewel tours (it already has been somewhat). More folks see her and are posting about it.....folks that see her for the first time hit the web looking for info on her and discover this list and thus the subscribership increases and so do the daily posts. (I get emails from the list server when someone subscribes, so I can see subscriptions increase from areas when she tours that area...especially when she's overseas) So, if at any time you are interested in changing your subscription to Jewel-digest and/or Jewel-news, you can do so by sending the doing the following: To change from loose mail to Jewel-digest AND Jewel-news, send unsubscribe jewel subscribe jewel-digest subscribe jewel-news end to majordomo@smoe.org To change from loose mail to only Jewel-digest, send unsubscribe jewel subscribe jewel-digest end to majordomo@smoe.org Please feel free to reply and ask me any questions :-) Mike ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 17:07:10 EST From: JewelAng@aol.com Subject: voting booth results Hey all EDA's, It's friday the day I've decited to post the votes of the week for your favorite Jewel songs. I'm just sitting here reading through the list posts and wanted to quickly address an issue. I'm going to try to make this brief. It seems whenever I say that I end up writing for hours, but this time - well.. we'll see. Anyhow. I just read the post about a young persons school teacher being concerned about their unborn child. A child that appears to have prenatal symptoms of DS. I certainly pass along my best wishes for you and your teachers family, but wanted to say something real quickly. I've worked with people with developmental disabilities for a long time, and one thing I've become to know is that there is no 'ideal' or 'perfect' baby. People born with developmental disabilities are no different from you or I. They deserve all of the same love and kinship that we take for granted. Many people say that they want the perfect baby, and when they have a child born with a disability, they feel let down, or betrayed. Children with disabilities are no more or less perfect than you or me. We all have disabilities. I think that everything in our lives happens for a specific reason. Sometimes its hard to find that reason, sometimes, we never find the answer, but there is always a reason. I've seen hundreds of people with DS that lead wonderful, prosperous lives. People with disabilities shouldn't be frowned upon, we shouldn't be sad for them. I wish I could write as prolific as I think, however, I can't seem to do it this evening.
