Here's what happened: Phil: " singer, songwriter and actress and poet... in fact you've got a new book out called ' A Night Without Armor' and you're going to play live for me. But first tell me about the poetry" Jewel: "Umm... I like poetry. Ya know I really believe in poetry. I believe in...uh.. people need to be educational... educated emotionally as much as they do historically, mathematically and English. Ahh so I did it for that just and also for my love of it, just because I love writing" Phil: " Have you heard the famous Pointy Bird poem?" Jewel: " Uh, no" Phil: "OK if I give it to you you can use it" Jewel: " Oh thank - you" Phil: " It's oh pointy bird, oh pointy, pointy... I know it's poignant at this stage... so Jewel: " Yeah" Phil: " Anoint my head, anointy, nointy" [Jewel chuckles] Phil: " Do you like that? You can use that in your book" Jewel: " You know I think I have it memorised just from one listening" Phil: " How do you that? [Jewel chuckles] Phil " Wow that's great. It took me like three or four years of personal experience to write that. Ya know with a lot of pain and anguish, but any way" Jewel: " Oh pointy, pointy, anoint my head anointy, nointy... was that it" Phil: " I'm honored, I'm honored" [Jewel chuckles] [Phil laughs] Phil: " So you did a lot of poetry reading at the Virgin Megastore, um what's that like? I mean 'cause you know basically, essentially your baring your soul. A bit like music I guess, but in front of all these people. Is that a bit intimidating?" Jewel: " It was definitely different. It's definitely a lot more revealing I guess" Phil: "Yeah" Jewel: " I'm just so used to rock shows. It was weird just to stand alone up on stage" Phil: " Yeah. ' Cause a lot of authors do that. You know for them it's also like a therapy thing. You know with a lot of people that write books they get up and do book readings and things, but it's not for the people that have brought the book. It's for them to kinda you know. I don't know purge, I guess" Jewel: " Yeah I don't know purging? The audience is purging. I know that sounds frightening" Phil: " Well there you go. It sounds like something out of Ally McBeal" [Jewel chuckles] Phil: " Alright your latest movie, which is coming out, called Ride with the Devil. Later this year in America. Is that right? 'Round about September. Which is based on a book called ' Woe to live on" Jewel: " Right" Phil: " Did you read that book?" Jewel: " I did" Phil: " And was it similar to what the screenplay's like?" Jewel: " Yeah. I mean the books are always so helpful, 'cause it really fleshes out a character so much more than the script does. It's the actor's job to flesh out the script. So having the book helped me" Phil: " Alright than listen. I wanna hear you play live right now and we've got a guitar there and a studio full of people. Ladies and gentleman, give it up ...... Jewel, Jewel, Jewel" [screaming and cheering from the studio] Jewel performs Do You. That was it. I remember reading about this only in passing when it originally aired. What I am wondering is why? This is clearly one of Jewel's best TV performances ever, perhaps her best since she did Emily on Charlie Rose. Why wasn't it discussed more heavily on the list? It kills any of her cheesy performances of Hands and is also better than her pretty good performances of Down So Long she's been doing recently. Aside from the heavy make-up it was very much the Jewel whose music I originally found so exceptional. Ironic also that the very song she played, Absence of Fear, was played once live on TV before by Jewel. Back in like, oh, musta been early 96, on MTV's 120 Minutes, back before she was popular and famous. And though she has tinkered with the song a bit since then, it was great to hear and see her play it live, just her and a guitar looking into the camera, the way it should be. So props to Jewel for showing a bit of her former self on the Tom Snyder show(despite his lame and relatively uninformed interview, I mean, not having ever heard of Lilith Fair, come on) and I am still hoping for a solo acoustic performance of Down So Long somewhere down the line, though I doubt it, and even if it it it will be the shortened Spirit version not the original much better Innerchange Days version. But I'm being too picky now. On that subject though, I am kinda looking for any tapes anyone might have of Jewel during say her Dylan opening act shows of a good quality show where she does Foolish Games solo acoustic, with guitar not piano. This is another song she has since cut to pieces and I don't have nay high quality versions of her doing this song life. I have the 1/96 Irving Plaza show and Innerchange Days but both versions are really hissy and just plain weak sound quality wise. Am hoping to find a better one. That's all for now. Subject: DSL radio play? Has anyone heard DSL on the radio in their town? I live around Houston, and not once, on ANY station, have I heard DSL yet. Don't radio stations usually play a single before a video comes out? That's what I thought anyway. Maybe they're just not playing that song here for some reason. Is it even a single in the USA? Unlike Hands. Or is it just going to be another import again? Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 15:32:23 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: So disappointing (DSL) Ok, I finally saw the DSL video...late maybe. But with MTV turning into a rap station this week, and me not watching it much anyway, the odds were slim I'd ever see it, so I guess I was lucky. Or maybe not, after seeing it. I'd rather have not actually. I really wish the J-team would have used one of the EDA's ideas...anything would have been better than what they did for the video...basically, nothing. Everyone, get up here on this fake stage, act like you're playing, and in 5 minutes or less (the length of the song), the torture will be over. I hope they didn't spend more than a day making that video, if they did, they wasted their time. I think they did anyway though. Natalie Imbruglia's video for Torn only uses ONE camera, that never moves. And it's even more creative than the DSL video. I just don't get it. They scrap all the good cretive ideas of the EDA's, after *asking* for submissions from us, then they give us something far less than mediocre in my opinion. Jewel won't be getting any AMA's for that video for sure. The only part I actually liked, just cause it was cute, not creative, was when she rocks her foot back and forth to the music....for about 3 seconds. That was it! She looks pretty near the end, the scenery is better than the rest of the video at least, but they only showed that part very briefly. Was there a story to this? I couldn't find one. The only part that even went with the song was when she was holding the suitcase on the "pack my bags" part of the song. She looked way too stiff there though. For some odd reason, Jewel reminded me of Melissa Etheridge in that video. Maybe it was her longer hair, the style, the minimal makeup, I don't know. I just kept thinking this is a younger Melissa. Anyhow, guess that's just my opinion, but I know others wish they would have used one of "our" ideas instead. I'm disappointed. I recently recorded an interview with Jewel broadcast by a German radio station. They are briefly talking about Jewel´s singing lessons. As far as I remember, she took just one or two before recording POY. She wasn´t too happy with this, she said that it ruined her singing, because she lost somehow the way she used to sing, without thinking about the way she sings too much. After those lessons, she startet to thing about the way she sings and that lead to a loss of here natural singing voice. She also stated that she was happier with here voice on SPIRIT. - I can´t compare those two albums, because (shame on me) I haven´t bought POY yet. Ok, a while back I posted about an EDA poetry book, and I've received so much enthusiasm that I would save myself work and reply to all of you here! Recently I've received word from Mike Connell that it has already been done quite recently, October/November of last year. One member e-mailed me and he had an idea of an (official) EDA poetry website, with which he will help since he knows HTML code. Another member offered the idea of collection EDA art. There was no link to any poetry site like that in any of the replies I got, so I assumed it doesn't exist. So what does everybody think about an official poetry SITE then? Anyone who wants to could e-mail their poetry to my address [koos@writeme.com] with the subject line [EDA Poetry : {Poem title}]. If we get enough support for the site then we will have an archive of poems to start with.
