To refresh your memory, the questions were.... #1 - If you could pick 12 angelfoods songs and put them on a new Jewel CD for major label release, which ones would they be? #2 - One thing everyone didn't seem to like on Spirit was that it was overproduced. BUT, what song that isn't on STL, PBBAB, PoY, or Spirit do you think could benefit most from getting the studio treatment? #1 RESULTS I DID say that not only could they not be on PoY or Spirit, but they also couldn't be on STL or PBBAB. However, most people completly ignored that, and put songs on there anyway. So I accepted them. Plus, there were requests for the old versions of Deep Water and Innocence Maintained, and YWMFM w/ Steve. I can't remember the exact words but you get what I mean... are you talking about the Perth concerts? Cos I think those were the two before us... unless she meant the 2 earlier melb concerts which she did before she was in perth... But may I just add that I was disappointed with how structured the performances were.. I mean practically every concert sounds the same... she told the same stories sang the same songs which I suppose is good seeing as some people may have felt disappointed that she had done or sang a song they liked at a concert they heard about but not at the one they went to... still although i think its cool that everyone gets to hear the mull story and the model story... It would have been nicer to know they were spontaneous... Oh yeah and can anyone tell me what Steve Poltz's album My Left SHoe or what any of his other album's CDs etc are like? I know I heard him sing at the concert and I liked his stuff there but I downloaded some wavs and although they're just one liners I feel his music may be a bit too country for me... So if anyone can enlighten me on his music that'd be great... Also is he like well known in the states? I know not many people here know of him... well apart from most Jewel fans that is but i thought perhaps he was already well known in America. I got tix to his gig for april!!! Its an 18 and over show though and I'm 17... so I'm desperately trying to think of a way to get in... I wouldn't have been too worried but the tix say that photo ID will be required so any one out there with any good hints and tips on this sort of stuff... I'm anxiously waiting for your help! see ya all Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 14:59:30 +1100 (EDT) From: Barry.Howarth@anu.edu.au (Barry Howarth) Subject: Canberra concert 6 March Hi Angels, I saw Jewel live in concert last Saturday night in Canberra, Australia's capital city. It was my first time. I don't know what the "old" Jewel was like, but the "current" Jewel is bloody marvellous!!! She sang for about two hours and I wished it could have gone on forever. What a performer! What a woman! She has added a whole new dimension to my listening to her sing. Her physical presence is just stunning, not to mention her voice. Jewel began "traditionally" with "Don't": just her and her guitar, but a very slow, "Spirit" style version. She ended the concert "traditionally" as well, with "Chime Bells", and sang more than twenty songs in between, some from "Pieces of You", some from "Spirit", some not on either CD. Most she sang by herself and some with the band -- a really good mix. The highlight of the night for me was a simply beautiful acoustic rendition of "Enter from the East". When she sang with the band, she had the freedom to dance around the stage and to come right up to the front, as near to the audience as she could get, especially after she literally let her hair down and called on everyone to stand up and come down to the front close to her. Then she did a very heavy version of "Down So Long" and a fantastic up-beat version of "Who Will Save Your Soul" that was so sexy and wild, with an incredibly long scat section towards the end! I just love her scat singing. Jewel is far more beautiful than any picture I have ever seen of her. She wore a sort of tank top and leather pants and started off with her hair up.The way she looked and moved on the stage was such an integral part of the overall performance, along with the music and the words and that exquisite voice. The way she looks adds to the impact of a song. Anyway, her set was (not in the exact order): Don't Near You Always Morning Song Hands What's Simple Is True Enter from the East You Were Meant for Me (after the whale-watching story, and partly with Steve) Barcelona Jupiter Innocence Maintained Life Uncommon Deep Water Foolish Games (a really passionate but quiet version) Sometimes It Be That Way Grey Matter Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone Down Down So Long Who Will Save Your Soul Encore: Absence of Fear Angel Standing By Chime Bells It was a truly wonderful night with the most wonderful woman. Apparently she's bringing her guitar along with her and might play a song or two. Again, for the USA folks, 4pm Sydney time translates to 2:00am eastern USA time. Even though I love Sarah, it'd be nice if Jewel won.. so I figured a good way to get votes for her would be to send it out it all the EDAs :) So anyway, here's the email and the address to go to: - ---- We've recently been informed that Sarah is one of the nominees for the 5th Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, in the category of Modern Rock Female. Her competition in this category is Jewel and Alanis Morissette. You can vote directly on-line, or through any Blockbuster Video Store in your neighbourhood. To make your on-line vote, you can do so through this location: http://www.blockbuster.com/awards/index.html Voting ends March 15th, and is open to residents of both Canada and the States. The airing of this award show will be sometime in June on the Fox network. - ---- =P ~Laura R. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 02:34:51 +1100 From: Dave Wang Subject: "The Age" Jewel Review (1/3/99) G'day all! Here is a review of the 25/2/99 Jewel concert taken from 'The Age" Newspaper here in Melbourne, which is one of two major newspapers in Melbourne. (This review is *not* my own personal opinion and I don't agree with most of it!) Dave - the Aussie Angel >From "The Age", 1/3/99 (Reprinted kindly and without permission - so sue me again....): - ---------------------------- Buried Treasure Lost - Jewel, The Palais, 25/2/99 "Less is more is clearly not a theory American singer/songwriter Jewel Kilcher applies to performing - although maybe it should be. Earnest lyrics, folk-flavoured melodies and a sweet yet anguished voice have allowed the 24 year old to stand out from the crowd on the FM airwaves. But in the first gig of her debut Australian tour, Jewel showed she could render her distinctive tunes in the best of bland-rock fashion. She can also swamp her more poignant songs in excessive vocal theatrics. The result was a confused and only partly successful show. Instead of letting her trademark pared-back style come through, Jewel connected intermittently. Starting in the darkness with just her voice and guitar, 'Near You Always' was a promising opening. But then a five-piece band, including three guitars, joined her for 'Deep Water'. That track comes from her second and most recent album, 'Spirit', which has a sameness about much of its material. 'Hands', also from that album, was a major disappointment, lost and confused amid the guitars and Jewel's unnecassary vocal gymnastics. She soars, she whispers, she yells, she even comes close to caterwauls. Sometimes she's too much. After 'You Were Meant for Me', however, Jewel bantered with the crowd and showed a healthy disrespect for the neo-hippie aura she has developed for some. 'If we just held each other's hands, then we wouldn't have time to hold any guns,' she said in a parody of the sort of New Age philosophy that critics say she espouses. Then she followed with a series of hits and misses. She read several of her own poems (miss), sang one song polka style (hit) and forgot half the words to another (miss). Her talent was obvious, so why did she cover it with the silly ornamentations? 'Foolish Games', performed soon after showed Jewel at both her best and her worst. Supported by only a keyboardist, she began powerfully. Her voice sublime, she rose and dipped with the emotion until the effort got the better of her towards the end. Soon she was histrionic, at times almost yelping the notes to flaunt her extraordinary vocal range. Each no-o-ote was given more than its fair share of airtime. After 90 minutes, Jewel returned full circle to her accoustic beginning. 'Angel Standing By', her last song in the encore, was perhaps the highlught of the evening. A model of simplicity, it also gave us a glimpse into the enormous potential of Jewel's songwriting and vocal abilities." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 19:25:52 -0000 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: The Best Of Lilith Fair (with Jewel) The following is scheduled for early Sunday morning on VH1 in the UK. 01:00 - 03:00 The Best Of Lilith Fair "From the all-female American tour, with Jewel, Sheryl Crow and Paula Cole" Chris. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 12:00:26 PST From: "Michael Ward" Subject: SJC: Help us pick our wedding song. Hi EDA's! This past weekend my girlfriend and I were engaged! YAYE!!! We both love Jewel's music so much, we were wondering which song would be the best to have playing as Kathy, my fiancee, walked down the aisle at our wedding... This is where you can help us if you'd like to play a role in our wedding on October 2nd of this year. I'm kind of partial to "What's simple is true" and "Absence of fear", but since we don't know many of the more obscure "angelfood" songs out there, Kathy and I are asking all of you Every Day ANGELS for a little help. Just a reminder: The song will be playing as she walks down the aisle, not for the bridal dance, so it doesn't really matter if it's dancable. The words DO have to really mean a lot though. (that's why I said I'm kinda partial to the two songs I mentioned earlier on in this post). If there is a song that you think would be a really fitting for this, the most important event in our lives, please e-mail me privately at: michaelward10@hotmail.com Also, if we haven't heard the lyrics, we may ask you to send them to us if you have the time to, and maybe tell us where we can get a good copy of the song too. Thanks so much from both of us for all of your help!!! :o) From: Michael (not the ArchAngel) and Kathy (The real life Angel who came into my life!) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 17:14:39 EST From: Drake34@aol.com Subject: Bioryhtm Hey guys, I am need of some help...
