A little while ago someone posted about poets inspired by Jewel..can't remember exactly what or who, but what if we compiled a book consisting of EDA poetry? I don't think it should be published, but it'll make a stunning gift for Jewel, ar just something to have (like an EDA T-shirt). Anyway, tell me what you think!! The quote dated 3/4/99. It was the classic: "Maybe if we are surrounded in beauty, someday we will become what we see." Cool, Huh? I attended the concert in Canberra on March 6th (last Saturday) & had the best night! I missed the first support act which was a bit of a bummer but unavoidable. We were escorted to our seats and they were really excellent seats at the back of the Theatre (on the balcony). The performers were a little tiny, but it they were still excellent. Steve Poltz took the stage as we were seated. I haven't listened to any of Steve Poltz's music (she says shame facedly!) and I WAS COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY! He is a consummate performer, a joy to watch with a great sense of humour to boot! He revved up the crowd & left the stage on a wave of applause. As a side note - Canberra (for those that aren't aware) is Australia's Capital City. Lets face it, fellow Australians, it's a bit of a farce - Sydney is the true Capital of Australia. Anyway, what I'm getting at here is that, as a musician & avid lover of live music/performances, Canberra is a TOUGH crowd. Particularly at a venue that is IMO fairly average. The other thing I would like to note is that I don't think that most of the people that were in attendance had heard very much of Jewel's music aside from the much played radio songs such as YWMFM, WWSYS & Foolish Games. Although all of the Australians on this list have had the pleasure of discovering Jewel's un-released material - the chances of us happening upon rare Jewel recordings is basically pretty unlikely. It is not a given when you join a list that the content will be much chop - I'm happy to say that this list is peaceful & intelligent (except I really don't like the "Jewel's changed - She's gone Pop Princess on us!" etc.) As an extra side note - One of my favourite Jewel audio sites has been bought down due to expensive web space - if I could I would offer my own, so if you have any web space free please offer it! http://members.aol.com/jewelpage/ Now, back to my original train of thought! Jewel came out to a crowd that was pretty cold - I will never understand why they did this but after Steve Poltz the crowd was jumping they then went to a 25 minute interval. I'm not sure what was up with Jewel - but she goes into 3 consecutive songs without saying "hi" which is okay - but then she says "How's it going?" and everyone started to cheer and go off and she says "Yeah well" & rocks into another tune. I just thought it was a bit odd. For the most part Jewel's communication with the audience was pretty much a non-starter. She did tell the "bust" story - which I am not going into because you probably can recite it by now due to an amazing amount of stories about it. I was almost mouthing the words to the story as she told it - fully ruined that punchline! By the last four songs after Jewel had bought everyone down from the balconies & middle sections she was warm & really great with the crowd. But it took the entire concert for Jewel to break the ice. To be fair to both parties, as I said, Canberra is a tough crowd, but it is also the responsibility of the performer to get them revved up. Steve Poltz had no problem - the crowd were ripe to be rocked on a Saturday night. Jewel just fell a little short IMO. Don't kill me guys - it's the truth. And I also can sort of see why that Melbourne article was so scathing. While we're on the topic - the chemistry between Steve & Jewel is almost tangible. Now, I know they are not together, have been in the past, she's dating someone else etc. but I don't care - they obviously shared something very special together! Musically speaking, they really set each other off too. Anyway, I think Jewel was a bit amazed by the fourth song that the crowd were pretty dead. The first five rows did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except one request for "Boy Needs A Bike" before the last set. Shocking. At one point Jewel is singing Foolish Games I think or maybe YWMFM - and she says "Half of you don't know the words". I suppose she couldn't see me way up the back singing along with my copy of ANWA and guitar books of POY & Spirit. Another thing - no-one at the front obviously had a copy of ANWA that Jewel could see anyway, so there was no poetry reading. I FEEL RIPPED OFF about that. I would have quite happily wandered down the front to give it to her to read from..... To be quite honest, I don't think Jewel suits big venues. Her voice is absolutely superb & so powerful but something is lost in the translation of the lyrics perhaps - I don't know. I almost crucified three stupid girls with a look when they giggled through the last half of Near You Always. I know I'm being harsh but adolescent does not have to equal heartless does it? You would have to be heartless not to hear those lyrics & pause for reflection. The concert was a great success and I really enjoyed it. Somehow though I wish it had been at a more relaxed venue & that the general focus was not in ticket sales but the appreciation of the fine talent that Jewel is.... Take care peeps, Luv Dani PS - I didn't post the set list because it would have been completely in-accurate. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Mar 1999 20:53:37 -0200 From: Sue Harrison Subject: RE: rerun dates Jewel/Rockies Hey EDA's, I read that "digital spew" in digest #103.... It made me cry...the lyrics were so haunting. I haven't even heard the song. I will write you the lyrics so everyone can read them if you haven't already: Jessica He used to walk with Jessica Down to the diner They'd sit and talk for hours About nothin' in particular Just bullshit the time away That's what she used to say She'd wrinkle her nose when she said it That's how you know she meant it Jessica Jessica She'd call him at nine a.m. To see how sleep had been treatin' him And though they were never lovers They were soulmates under cover They'd drink beer and sit around Or just sit still and not make a sound And he would shudder to think Of what life would be like Without his best friend -slash- shrink Jessica Bridge: She's an angel at his table Forced to feel but not to see Blinded by her absence Haunted by her memory If only you were able to see the angel at your table He got a phone call From her mother He said, "Yeah, right stop kidding around." He felt his heart fall to the ground Since then everyday Seems to feel like winter Everything is colorless As he can't see it with her Jessica Jessica He could easily have been with her Driving home in the car It was her birthday It's sick how things work out that way Now at night when he sleeps A watch over him she keeps She whispers in his ear For his heart to hear Jessica Jessica It's amazing how a soul can leave Suddenly from a body Rendering it useless And stealing its desire to breathe One moment here then gone With no forwarding address Love no longer has a house Residence in flesh Religion without a temple No place to take your worship to No God for the eyes to see No fruit to lay at the feet of Jessica Jessica If only you were able to see The angel at your table Then you'd understand why You never got to say goodbye To Jessica There's no such word as goodbye For Jessica She's always standing by Jessica I can't explain but it just really affected me. It is so sad. @~Rachel~@ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Mar 1999 18:02:35 -0800 From: "David E. Loewen" Subject: Re: My Jewel theme Hi, all. They talk about the lyrics of Hands and other stuff. I read really late at night and I haven't gotten time to read it again. Sorry this is late. I wont go into too many details/set list about the concert since it's already been covered (you can hear Steve giving a kiss to Louise on the tape). I'm willing to give away the angelfood but on one condition. Unfortunately due to work commitments I wont have alot of time to tape it for my fellow EDA's so Im looking for someone who will be the "head of the tree" so to speak. Im willing to throw in the tapes and postage to this person, so dont be shy :-) - -=- Jase PS> Im going to work in Nashville to work for 3 months in April, so are there any EDAs from Nashville. On Steve Poltz's promo ep "Conversations over a Cerveza" I think I remember him introducing "I Thought I Saw You Last Night" about his friend passing away. So I was wondering, is Steve the friend she wrote "Jessica" for? Peace, cymbaline ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #107 ***************************
