Though there was not much new info about her life (of course, I guess being EDAs we take for granted most people do not know much about her) My only real complaint.. It was short. Yes, it covered her history quite well, (Although like someone posted about "Angel Standing By".. it was like a report) But the story was complete for the length of time allotted.. I kinda was craving some full-blown "jewel" stories ( ya know, like the "pieces of you" fashion show story, or the YWMFM drug bust, or the "1000 Away" Zen and the Art of cycle repair story, etc) Hey, while I am being goofy here.... how about a 24 hour cable-access all Jewel/poltz channel? I would quit climbing my pole and actually pay for cable.... ANYWAY... That brings me to my last post about being obsessed. I have taken some flack for that... It was mainly a joke.. I had noticed that I expend quite an effort to make sure I keep up to date concerning Jewel, and to see her on shows, etc.. I was using a form of self deprecation humor... It was ill-taken by a few people, and I am not sorry ("I'm sorry is such a stupid thing to say"(sorry, I had to say that!) but I do apologize.. Obsession is a serious thing, and people really do go too far with being a dedicated fan sometimes... And I feel sorry for both them and the people they are obsessed with... Most of the people that are famous do not ask to be hounded, followed, or worshipped.. So, please, realize I was joking, and I needed some way to bring up roping plywood animals..... take care of each other Rowdy "What we have here is a failure to communicate..." from the film, "Cool Hand Luke" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 02:11:00 EST From: EPhili2568@aol.com Subject: Hi all you Everyday Angels... Andrew Daddo interviewed her from Adelaide. Wasn't too bad an interview but she looks really tired (not that that is surprising). I saw her concert in Perth on the 28th which was fab but I will spare everyone all the details in an email - I'll have setlists, photos and a review on my web page before too long. while I'm here I'd better tell you all that our "Glittering" gal is on the cover of Vogue this month and although its probably the most boring magazine in the world the article on her is great! Here is a review of the 25/2/99 Jewel concert taken from 'Inpress' Magazine here in Melbourne, a free circulated street press. (This review is *not* my own personal opinion! I don't agree with most of it!) Dave - Aussie Angel >From 'Inpress' Magazine 3/3/99 (reprinted without permission - so sue me!): - -------------------------------------------------------------- Jewel/Steve Poltz (Palais Theatre) "Thursday: 'Whatcha doin' tonight, man?' 'Well - I'm going to see Jewel.' Friday: 'Hey man, watcha do last night?' 'Went to see Steve Poltz'" "Who is this bouncy, throaty, super hansome young man with a guitar that had us eating out of his hand? They're love songs, they're awfully sincere and sad, but also heartbreakingly funny. From 'Forbidden Fruit', the story of a one nighter with a prostitute, the highlight of his 'One Left Shoe' album and tonight's exceptional set: 'We sat down on her floor/Connected like a human train/I talked on and on about my life/Her interest she just feigned.' No matter if it was with the slightly strained rasp in which he sings, or the easy, deep roll in which he introduced his songs, Poltz's every word saw his flirty grin reciprocated by a thousand people with a brand new crush. Even when his last couple of songs saw him joined on stage by backing vocalist Jewel, it was all eyes on Poltz. A wonderful surprise." "Jewel could best be described as a frustrating performer. A set dominated by bland, overdone radio rock was punctuated by a couple of truly compelling moments. These good bits owed much thanks to Jewel's voice, and very little to her songwriting. Definitely the least credit must go to her personality, which was inflicted upon us in great lashings tonight. I never realised how annoying the characters of 'Friends' were until tonight I saw one of them when they were not being funny. One of Jewel's cute little stories in particular would have put a Metallica bass solo to sleep, as she cutely described her reaction to each of about a hundred and two situations by saying 'So then I'm just like...' and pulling a cute little face. Totally. Before one song which she claimed to have not played for a while, she warned she may forget the words. At the end of the first verse, she did. It was so awfully endearing and cute that she went on to forget three other lines in the same song. This went down so well that later on she forgot the words to another song. Just when you're deciding just exactly which expletive to scream at the top of your lungs, she cuts the shit, tells the band to take five and actually sings. What an incredible voice - even a song as plain and overladen with pretense as 'Foolish Games' can be redeemed by this woman's amazing vocal talent. But, to our immense frustration, we only heard it a few times - either she was smothered by her over-populated band (Radiohead needed less players to reproduce 'OK Computer', and we're running through the equivalent of Melissa Etheridge B-sides here), or instead of singing songs she was just blathering on. And on." - -------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Mar 1999 12:22:43 -0500 From: "tricia pavlik" Subject: help for paper... Hey everyone! I was wondering if any of you could help em with my English paper that I have to write this month. The whole concept behind this paper is pretty awesome, but sometimes it is hard to find information. My professor asked us to choose one disk that we would take to a deserted island and write three papers on it; we are on the second one now which is a research paper. (Oh I chose Pieces of You). Anyways, I think I am going to focus my research on the people who helped to produce and arrange the CD, plus the other musicians. If you guys happen to know any information on these people or great websites to go to in order to find this information please e-mail me! I will put in names such as Spooner Oldham, whom I know is fairly well known, but will only get little clips of info. I would appreciate and information or advice you can give me. Last night as I watched Biorythm I absolutly loved it, the music, the story, and how they showcased her poetry in the background but there is one aspect that really angers me. She puts her heart and soul and everything thats worths something to her in her poetry to help her cope with life, love, and everything in between. She had the bravery to put in a book and show it to the world not to make money and not to show people what a great poet she is but to help comfort hurting people in the world and to show them that they are not alone. And I'm sorry if the critics out there are too thick skulled and un-passionate that all that had to say about her book were rude remarks thrasing it for it's honesty, then they are the ones who need to be honest with themselves. I mean come on, when you discourage honesty and optimism in this world then look what you have to face: War, Lies, Drugs, Alcohol, and anything and everything you can think of. And I have a question, if Jewel's book is so bad how come it is still on the bestsellers list and I'm sure more people love it than agree with those critics. I loved it last night when she thrasheed the critics on her album POY and for her book. They finally deserved it and she has more influence in my mind than they ever will! Subject: I want to FLY from here How many times did they play that quote last night on MTV? I'm referring to the Biorhythm show. All in all, I thought it was pretty good. Aside from a few skewed captions, it was fairly accurate. I had seen most of the footage, but I liked some of the "still" photos. They were cool to see. I also wish they had done a little more about the present. Not alot, but more. More than the 2 minutes they allowed for that. Out of over 20 total. Maybe give it 5 minutes. They made Conan seem like a hero. I know he helped out Jewel get her break on TV, but they overdid that part I think. Steve helped more than Conan, but I know they gave him credit too. And they should have mentioned about the movie, and her Wizard of Oz performance. I thought THAT was more of a break than the Conan show. The music was pretty good, but some of those songs I didn't get how they went with that time of her life. One I DID like though, was when they played "Save Yourself" by Stabbing Westward. That was cool. Perfect timing. They did that during the time she released WWSYS. I guess most people know she sold over 10 million copies of PoY, and other more current things, but they still could have given more attention to the present. Maybe 1/4 of the show. I would give it a borderline A rating, but there wasn't any mention of the EDA's! Not ONE! Can yall believe that? We didn't help her at all? Not even a little? Not for one caption on biorhythm? I mean, the whole in-studio audience on MTV's own Total Request Live with Jewel was made up of EDA's! Helloooo! Because of that, I give MTV a B+ on the show. They showed tons of fanatic footage too, the interviewer of those segments was....guess.....an EDA!!!! MTV, do you have brains? We all know the answer to that one. Oh well, life goes on. If you didn't catch the show, then try to. There are some cool photos, and early stuff many may have not seen before. Even if no credit or "acknowledgement" is given to US. And they showed a lot of footage of generic blonde children, not really her. I mean, I just noticed it because I have watched a lot of the episodes from the series and the others seemed to have a lot more personal pictures and footage. Anyway, the rest was really good. Later, Rebecca PS- I just got this free CD in the mail from PLAY, a new Columbia House type company. Anyway, they have samples from about 60 different songs. One sample was YWMFM as a sample for Female Singer/Songwriters. It only about a few seconds. I was confused why they would use YWMFM since it was a single what 2, 3 years ago??? I mean its cool they used it and all but the CD is supposed to advertise NEW music, not old. They should have used Hands. The calendar, headline news & rumor/truth sections have now been updated. You may want to check www.jeweljk.com for most current accurate info or if you've missed this weeks postings. The Japan/S.E. Asia tour dates are now up more accurately. I know many of the European EDAs are confused about their tour dates posted on Atlantic's site. They are still in the process of putting that swing of the tour together. With the exception of the UK dates & The Pink Pop Festival, none of those dates are confirmed & all are subject to change! That's why we haven't included them yet on Jewel's site. We do care about you but we want to give you accurate information. NOT speculation which only confuses everyone even more. As soon as those dates are confirmed & venues booked, I'll definitely let you know both here & on the website. Those dates are still more than two months away & theres plenty of time. Also, several have mentioned the AOL browser isn't working well on the website in the past 24 hours. We are aware of this. It's related to some changes on our end & will be fixed up soon. I experienced the same thing on my AOL browser but its working perfectly with Netscape. Should be running perfectly for everyone soon. I know many of you are extremely curious to see the new "Down So Long" video. Just another reminder that it'll premiere tommorrow at approximately 3:30PM EST on MTV. Then it should be on quite a bit & easy to catch from there on out. Also, don't forget the VH1 "Jewel Rockin The Rockies" special premiering on Saturday night at 9:00PM EST. And "Jewel Day" on Australian MTV on Sunday. ( More OZ concert reviews & setlist postings please! ) Finally, a shot in the dark... Are any CT EDAs going to see Veda Hille at Trinity College in Hartford Friday evening? If so, say hello. I'll be that bearded, disoriented guy having flashbacks of college & panic from not remembering my locker combination.... ;-) MrBB ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #98 **************************
