I presume its the same article as appeared in the US end of year double issue, presented in 6 part headings by Neil Strauss. (Part one: She Likes Dessert, etc) Eight pictures including the cover shot (although one is a smaller pic of a full page pic later in the article), and about 4 or 5 pages of text. Worth checking out......go get!!!! Craig The Aussie charts for those of you interested, Hands is steady at #38 after 15 weeks in and a peak of #25 Spirit is currently #11 on the albums chart, down from #8 last week, it peaked at #5 the last week of January (this could well change though in light of the tour) Also I have heard the single "down so long" is due out for release in early March, they wouldn't give me a date though. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 00:03:00 -0600 From: Scott- e Sykes Subject: Music is life! Well, I have to tell you I had the most amazing night tonight at the first concert on the Jewels Tour. I sit here at 2:30 in the morning after what has been an awesome day just reflecting about all that has happened and I thought I would drop you all a line. It started at around 1pm this afternoon when we got to the Palais in Melbourne hoping to catch Jewel from her sound check. Unfortunately because this was the first show, I found out that they had actually arrived in Melbourne on Monday and had been rehearsing since, so the sound check had been completed the previous day so we were out of luck. My friends (who are not Jewel fans) were having a bit of a light hearted joke at me because I was hanging to meet her and I was not going to get a chance. So after a bit of a chat with the security guy at the door we found out that Jewel wasn't going to arrive until about 7:30 - 8pm, so I decided to go home get my stuff and come back. After hell driving in traffic I finally got back to the palais and found that she had already arrived but couldn't sign any autographs because she was running late. I felt a little relieved that I hadn't really missed out on an opportunity so it was on to the concert we went. Steve Poltz was first up and he was awesome. He was very funny and played a really cool song he had only written in the past few days and played it to us first. Jewel then came out and did a duet with steve on 2 songs which sounded unreal. After Steve's set there was a short break and it was on with Jewel. I was really apprehensive about seeing Jewel with a band. All of us are used to her playing with a guitar and little accompaniment, but as the concert progressed it just sounded right. (I apologise about my description of the concert in terms of what songs she played because its all still a little blurry) After a few songs and one or two minor mistakes, the band left the stage. She asked anyone if they had a copy of "A Night without Armor" and she asked the crowd what poems they would like her to read. She read the poem she read on Oprah (about Vietnam) and accordingly took the piss out of oprah, (saying the word "Girlfriend!" a lot) and finished by playing "satellite" as a request of the crowd. Then she introduced "You were meant for me" by telling the audience about her and Steve's Trip to Mexico and the events that led into the writing of the song. While I wont repeat the story here , it was very funny. Jewel played the Cold Song and was really suprised that the Australian Audience knew it, but it went down really well with the crowd. She played a good mixture of stuff of both albums, with a really passionate performance of "Foolish Games" The highlight of the show came with "Down So Long". This is a song that I only had luke warm feelings for on the album, then after seeing it live on Letterman the other week it sounded heaps better. In Concert it went totally off! The whole band got into it, Steve was jumping up and down everywhere and they all seemed to really enjoy playing the song and the audience appreciated it. Jewel finished the main set off with "Who Will Save your soul" which was awesome as well. For the encore Jewel started off with "Absence of Fear" which was funny because she stuffed up the first few lines and had to start again, but it was great. For the finale, Jewel played (rather aptly) Angel Standing By. All in all it was an awesome concert that I have been hanging out for ages. For me personally though the night just started there. My friend and I decided we were on our way home and we saw the van Jewel was in parked out front a hotel around the corner from the concert venue. We thought that it maybe a closed function, but no we walked straight in and there was Jewel and Steve attending there talking surrounded by her entourage. Not letting an opportunity like this to waste we had a drink and I tried to muster up the guts to go and talk to her and the others. Finally I bit the bullet and went and talked to Steve. He is just the nicest bloke, we talked about Melbourne and beer and the sites and all that. (I was trying to be calm because I didn't want to make a total dick of myself.) Finally after talking to Steve for a while he introduced me to Jewel, just like she was someone whom I had never met before. We exchanged pleasantries and chatted as a group for a while before being swept away by someone else in the party. 2 things I noticed about Jewel was that she is so sincere and also more beautiful in person than any picture can reproduce. I was stunned to be perfectly honest. I wanted to ask her so many questions about what she thought of the EDA's and music and stuff, but I just couldn't cause I didn't want to scare her and make her think I was an obsessed idiot or something. So Jewel had been swept away and Steve had a little too much to drink, by this stage so we bid our farewells and went home. I was just amazed that someone who I had read about and seen on TV was standing there in front of me and her soul was just unaffected by the fame. Anyway...... enough of my ranting for one night, that you for reading my rather long winded and erratic review of an awesome concert and I will be looking forward to see you all later. Sorry if you've seen 5 million reviews already of the show. First the setlist: W/ Steve Poltz during his set: Impala I Thought I Saw You Last Night Jewel: Near You Always (Solo) (Band enters) Deep Water What's Simple Is True Hands Jupiter Long story about Jewel and Steve participating in a Mexican pot bust You Were Meant For Me (band exits) Enter From The East (Solo) Cold Song It's poetry time: A Slow Disease Wild Horse Miracle back to the music: Satelite (band enters) Life Uncommon Kiss The Flame Barcelona Foolish Games Down So Long Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul (set ends) Encore: Absence of Fear Angel Standing By (solo) Well... there it is. The show was absolutely amazing. Starting from the beginning, the first act was a woman named Lou Barlett, or something like that. She did well, solo acoustic and obviously nervous. Then it was time for Steve Poltz. I'd never heard his stuff before, so I didn't know what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised. He was very animated and put on a fantastic show, all solo acoustic except one song which the pedal steel player from the band came out and played on. In the middle of his set, he introduced a song that he'd written with Jewel called Impala, and tried to coach the audience on how to sing her back vocal part. The song started and who should walk out at the chorus but our girl Jewel! They did that song and then one other before she left and Steve finished his set. Then, a break and the lights dimmed. It must have been about two or three minutes before Jewel walked out alone but for her guitar and played a great version of "Near You Always". Then, out comes the band and they launch into "Deep Water". At this point I must say the band is fantastic...well rehearsed enough to know the material, but not overrehearsed and boring. Through the night, there was a lot of interplay between all the members, and they all seemed to be having a great time and really seemed to enjoy playing together. Steve and the drummer couldn't wipe the smiles off their faces. Following that came a few more Spirit songs. They really work well live, and Jewel and the guys don't just try to reproduce the album, but they really play with the songs and change them around. Jewel was in amazing voice, and really seemed to enjoy playing with a band. Then she told a long story about how her and Steve were in Mexico together and somehow got involved in a big pot bust and ended up having their picture taken with the Mexican police, tons of pot, and a bunch of AK 47's. This was followed by "You Were Meant For Me". Then came Jewel's solo set. "Enter From The East" was first, followed by "Cold Song" which she called the most philosophical song she's ever written :-). Then she asked for someone to pass her a copy of her book (4 copies were thrown at the stage) and then read three poems, as requested earlier in the day in a phone call by a guy named Wade apparently. One audience member, who Jewel called her syncophant called out the page number of the poem that the guy had requested. Anyway, after a bit of joking, Jewel read three poems, and then, by request, picked up her guitar and performed "Satelite", with some help on the lyrics from the audience. Then the band reentered, and they did three more "Spirit" songs, followed by a very strong and emotional version of "Foolish Games" Then came a great version of "Down So Long" with some great guitar work. After that, "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone", a strong rock'n'roll tune with a touch of country that the bassist messed up in the middle! The set closed with the obligatory "Who Will Save Your Soul" with Jewel throwing in some great scatting in the middle. Then the encore, just Jewel and the piano player doing "Absence Of Fear" which she screwed up on the first go and had to start again. Then she closed the night with a solo acoustic "Angel Standing By". My verdict, a phenomenal night. I wasn't sure how Jewel was going to be with the band, if she'd still be the same down to earth girl we've come to love, but I didn't need to worry. The band only added to the sound and made the experience more enjoyable. Jewel was still her funny, quirky, charming self, and I really enjoyed the show. Now, it's off to bed! Sorry if this is all just repetition. I just have a different view of the things you cite as reasons she could be a lesbian. Kim wrote: 2) the over-use of the word "breast" in her poetry and a few of her songs... she seems to have an obsession with the word.. 3) the fact that so many of her songs are about females (e.g. "Jessica", "Emily", "501 Beauty Queen", "Last Dance Rodeo", "She Cries", "Partial To Mary", "Louisa & Her Blue Guitar", "See Sassy", "Silver Satin Wings"...) and that so many of her songs portray males in a negative light (e.g. "His Pleasure Is My Pain", "Kiss Your Ass", "Race Car Driver", "God's Gift To Women", "Daddy"...) OK. Let me just add a couple of notes. I'm a woman and most of my poetry has to do with being a woman. (Makes sense, right?) And, I'll admit, a lot of my poetry about men has to do with break-ups. Break-ups and bad experiences just inspire me to sit down and write. But, like Jewel, I also have written stuff about good experiences with men. (i.e. Jewel's What's Simple Is True, Jupiter, Summer Home In Your Arms, Kiss the Flame) But there's nothing like writing poetry to release some of that excess anger you feel towards that not-so-special-anymore guy. :-) As for her use of the word "breast" what's wrong with that word? It's a symbol of femininity. Using the word "breast" in your writing/songs isn't a sign of lesbianism. It's just another way to express one's femininity and to celebrate it. I think Jewel's music and poetry taps into that quite a bit. What it's like not only to be a human being, but to be a woman as well. With the arrival and popularity of such events as Lilith Fair, which is a celebration of women, I think that Jewel reflects a growing number of songwriters/poets who want to tell young girls (and the older ones too) that they are wonderful, beautiful creatures capable of achieving all that they dream of. I also think there is a spirit of not being afraid of our own sexuality. It's so taboo to speak or even think about ourselves as sexual beings (especially if you went to private school, like I did). That's changing. I don't' think Jewel (or other female artists) advocates flaunting it, but she advocates being aware of it. 4) she doesn't often co-perform songs with other artists (well, other that Steve Poltz, anyway!!!) but some of her more well-known collaborations have been with Melissa Etheridge & the Indigo Girls, both acts well-known for their lesbianism... There was this little gathering of women singers called Lilith Fair.... anyway, as I said before, whatever her sexuality I don't think it's really any of our business to discuss, I'm merely just pointing out things I've noticed about her... whether she is hetero, homo or bi it doesn't change my opinion of who she is and how incredibly talented she is... :-) Of course not. Melissa Etheridge is a fabulous singer regardless of her sexual preference. But just because a woman sings about what she knows (what it's like to be a woman) and is aware of her own sexuality, doesn't make her a lesbian. Maybe I'm wrong and she is bisexual on some level, but I think she's just taking part in the new wave of celebrating women through music. One last thing I thought of. Why is it that when men sing about their sexuality, it makes them more heterosexual, but if a woman sings about her sexuality, she's considered homosexual or bisexual? *Jumping off the soapbox before something gets thrown at her* Lori Jupiter's Angel email: larthur@fullerton.edu ____________________________ Talking about love is like dancing about architecture. --Angelina Jolie, "Playing By Heart" ____________________________ ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #88 **************************
