I didn't tape the show - sorry - so this is mostly just a (long!) jumbled recollection. Most of the early interview focussed on Jewel's Alaska upbringing and basic biography. She appeared really, really nervous, which I suppose was because of the fact that the two presenters were asking questions in French, and they were apparently being translated by an earpiece with Jewel answering, naturellement, in English. So after saying all about living in Alaska, they showed a clip of Jewel's various magazine and press coverage with 'Life Uncommon' playing over it. Then they moved on to ask her about living in San Diego and stuff. (Earlier she said she still was not used to fame as she used to live in a 'car') One of the interviews said that playing in Innerchange and surfing and the sun and everything sounded like fun in his opinion, and Jewel answered 'Not being able to eat wasn't really fun' - not as curt as it sounds on paper. He then said it must have been strange toi go from that to staying in beautiful hotels after PoY - JK 'I didn't go straight to straying in hotels, and I spend most of my time in a tour bus now, so it's pretty much the same, hehe" Then they showed a montage of three videos - Foolish Games, Who Will Save Your Soul and Hands. They talked then about poetry ( I think this was next) comparing Bukowski's drink and sex lifestyle with Jewel's. The interviewer posed the question that as she didn't smoke, or drink and was a vergetarian, how did her poetry compare to Bukowski's. Jewel in reply - "I'm not a vegetarian. I like to eat meat. People just think that because I'm a folk singer I must be a vegetarian. " - cue widespread laughter. JK then said she had had health problems, and that was why she didn't drink or smoke. But she really would if she could. She said that the likes of Anais Nin, Henry Miller and Bukowski were role models when she was growing up - as musicians and stuff were perfect, beautiful and normal, and she didn't feel beautiful, perfect or normal. Then they talked about Spirit, with Jewel saying that she had had a spiritual upbringing - 'I was brought up that way'. They also talked some about 'Ride with the Devil' - JK said that she always wanted to act, but had waited until her music was 'stable'. The interviewers made a big thing about it being her first acting role. She then was asked to explain what Down So Long was about and she said that so many people are depressed and oppressed but that things get better. I can't remember the exact quote but she gave the song a positive interpretation. One of the interviewers then asked her how long she was staying in Paris - - and she said just two days. He was flirting like crazy with her, and when JK said 'but if I was staying longer, I would..", he got really excited - cue JK 'No, No!" and a riot of giggles all round. She then played a rousing version of Down So Long - when she looked totally at ease for the first time on the show. Overall, JK came across really natural - very nervous and genuine - she giggled a lot. She was wearing a black top and trousers. Sorry, I didn't look out for an engagement ring - I guess guys - even sensitive men of the 90's who really, sincerely care for your emotional being an awful lot ( : - just don't notice these things.
