I have promised Mike Carmona a tape of all the TV appearances in Australia in February-March in NTSC format so that he can distribute it to EDAs in the US. So far we only know that she will be on Hey Hey, but I'm sure there will be other appearances. I'm going to record every possibility, but I don't have cable abd I'm sure I'll miss some free-to-air shows. So, if all Australian EDAs could also try to tape every possible show and then send your snippets to me. I'll put together a compilation tape and send a copy of it to all those who contributed. If New Zealand EDAs could do the same, we could have a composite Australia/NewZealand tour video in both PAL and NTSC. I've already got a "Spirit"-related interview on Australian television and the ad for the tour to start things off. And could someone with cable tape the MTV thing too? So, if we pool our collective resources, we should get a good coverage of the tour. Contact me privately if you're interested in participating in this project. Gonzalez" Subject: Article from NY Post about the Monday concert http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/2329.htm WOMEN KNOW: SIZE MATTERS By DAN AQUILANTE WHEN you've been hurt and somebody brightly chirps that "every cloud has a silver lining," it's easy to want the well-wisher struck by lightning. Despite a stellar lineup, Monday's Women in Music concert was hurt by poor ticket sales, which forced the show to move from Madison Square Garden's 20,000-seat arena to its smaller Theater at MSG. That twist of fate transformed what almost certainly would have been a concert disaster into an intimate evening of music that sampled some of their best female voices of the last 40 years. Can you picture diminutive Janis Ian singing "At Seventeen" alone on the giant Garden stage with a small-bodied acoustic six-string? She would have been a speck. That same woman in the Theater was a musical spectacle who sizzled. Ian was one of the surprises of this estrogen power event that also featured Jewel, Paula Cole and Phoebe Snow, to name a few. Even though she's 47, Ian was all punk and spunk as she worked her three-song set, which included "At Seventeen" and "A Good Day to Die," which featured an over-the-top extended folk-funk guitar solo. Each star hit the stage running in an attempt to dazzle the audience from the first note. Some were more successful than others. Judy Collins' vocals on the folk ballads "Someday Soon" and "Both Sides Now" were crisp and spine-chilling, yet her ode to her home state, Colorado, was a major yawn. All the ladies wore black. Jewel looked busty in a spaghetti-strap slip top. Collins was majestic in a flowing, cape-cut jacket. Snow was elegant in a stretch outfit. And then there was Cole, who wore a fringed buckskin squaw dress. Under the spotlights, that dress was fashion suicide - until Cole made the fringe come alive, whipping it as she danced wildly to her own tunes. The movie joke "I'll have what she's having" seemed appropriate as Cole wailed through her brief set, delivering vocals with a panting, orgasmic style. Less homogenous than Lilith Fair, Women in Music featured folk legend Odetta early in the show and Snow late. Snow easily nabbed kudos as the top performance of the evening. She started slowly, with "Poetry Man." But it was in her final number, "Piece of My Heart," that she shook the house. She said, "My friends said it's a mistake to sing this song, but I want to do it." Sure, the selection - closely associated with Janis Joplin - was a major risk, but Snow met the challenge by emulating Joplin's passionate delivery and took the tune higher with a power 'n' glory gospel attack. Her rendition was magnificent. One would think that headliner Jewel would have been top dog in this yard, but Snow's was a tough act to follow. Jewel was allotted slightly more stage time, letting her do material from "Pieces of You" and her recent "Spirit" CDs. Her coffeehouse vocals ranged from a pretty soprano to a twangy alto to yodeling. She was at her best for a pair of songs from "Spirit": "Deep Water," where she reminded us "it's nothing without love," and "Hands," where the lesson is "in the end, only kindness matters." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 00:09:09 -0700 From: Rhino Subject: Jewel Standing By unveiled soon!! Hi all! Several people have been e-mailing me lately asking what's up with my web site, Jewel Standing By. It hasn't been updated for quite some time. The reason for that is because I'm working on an all new version of my site that includes frames, even more lyrics, and tons of other stuff. All around, it's much nicer. The grand opening date for the new Jewel Standing By will be no later than February 1st! So on that very day, point your browsers to: http://fly.to/jewel.jk I'll need lots of input from you guys, so go check it out when it opens! I've had many comments on my extensive lyrics archive, my Oil-Streaked Daisies page that features all original computer-enhanced photos of Jewel, and the wealth of information contained in the site. So go have a looksie and tell me what you think! If any of you have submitted links to be added to my site, please do so again, because I'll probably be deleting most of them. Thanks a lot and have a groovy day! Keep smiling, Ryan The jagged little angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 02:54:25 -0800 From: "George W. Bentley" Subject: Angel Standing By. My book report. Someone asked about the book "Angel Standing By" and if was it worth it. So, sense I just today finished reading it, I thought I would share... Title; Angel Standing By The Story of Jewel by P.J. McFarland Grade b- I'll Start with the same disclamer the author used "The Quotes from Jewel interspersed throughout this book were taken from a wide variety of published interviews she has given. I did not have the opportunity to interview Jewel myself. Dialogue has been reconstructed based on the recollection of one of the participants." I use that line 'cause it had a great deal to do with how I saw the author while I was reading the book. For the most part I found it to be informative, and even insprational. However I could not seem to get the feeling out of my head that I was reading a report. I get the feeling the author has never even seen jewel live, but that is just a feeling, the point is some things can not be writen thrid hand. I guess:-) Ok now for the good part P.J. was on the list long enough to include and mention some of the angels and also give you guys some very good words. I also learned alot about Jewels early years and how hard she worked to get where she is today. If nothing else I gained quite a bit of respect for Jewel and the work she put into getting where she is today. Ok I have a question for you angels.... Did any of you think when Jewel missed the lip synch on the Star-Spangled Banner She might of done it cause they wouldn't let her do it live (I didn't get to see this I'm just asking) Ok long post almost done. My recomedation is if Your new to Jewel then get this book, it's like cliff notes. But if you've been a fan for some time then you already know it word for word... one last point ... When I was on the Sarah McLachlan list P.J. came on to get info for a book on Sarah. Nettwerk Records on behalf of Sarah expresed opposition to this book but could do nothing to stop it, I didn't read that book. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 00:27:45 +1300 From: Nicholas Wong Subject: EDA's Toolkit to a Jewel concert Hi again everyone, i am still rather excited about Jewel coming to NZ.
