Does anyone else notice how the 'news' shows always do the best Jewel bits? Did they tape the segment on the same day as the AIDS benefit performance? She had on the same outfit. Jewel moves her hands an awful lot when she talks, doesn't she? At the music store where the anouncer was, there was a Spirit promo mini-poster on the wall. Can anyone else get this? I loved the end where Jewel said something along the lines of, "Hi, this is Jewel. You are watching CNN World Beat." Ok, just wanted to comment on the first Spirit-era performance I've seen since Jewel TV.. Which, by the way, was unfortunately unsuccessful. I know, I know, you can get it at angelfoodbank.org, but I already sent off the blank tape and everything, and, well, I just can't wait that long (I can be quite impatient sometimes). So, if any of you angels know of any *WORKING* links for "Jessica" or any other Rare/Radio Angels in real audio or .wav on the web, please e-mail me the address where I can download them at. It would mean the world to me! If she did the frame would be more like the $125 special print that they are also selling (as far as price is concerned). I also have the frame, and I love it dearly and it is one of the things that I would have Jewel sign if I could see her again and get an autograpgh. I am thoroughly pissed that the one time I did meet her I didnt have anything for her to sign. oh well, maybe next time. You know, the ones who always writes every couple of months. I used to have adopted children (talking EDA wise). Two of them. A girl and a guy. Both of which I haven't even heard from since the middle of December. I think it was because of my promise for there angelfood. I didn't realize that the girl lived all the way in England (I am in Florida) so I was unable to send her anything. The guy: I did send him something, but it was like after a month. It took me a long time to make the tape, and I couldn't figure out postage. I must have sent it out to him about a month ago, and I still have no reply. Maybe it's because he's mad at me that I never wrote to him or whatever. I lost their addresses because it was on my lap top, and my parents took it to give my to cousins in the Philippines (they are buying me a new one, so don't worry). I thought I had the addresses on this computer, but I guess I don't. I haven't even seen their names on the list, so I don't even know if they unsuscribed. So, I guess I am looking for new children. One girl and one guy perferberally to even it out. Unless things prove otherwise. You must live in the United States, and I will try to be a good mother. Now I know how much the postage is, and I still have copies of my special angelfood tape. So if anyone needs a mother, i am right here. Just like most frames you purchase in a store, it comes with a picture & for obvious reasons, they chose to have it be an autographed picture of Jewel. The autograph is part of the printing itself. Its kinda like a free little enclosure with THE FRAME. The photo does have Jewel's autograph on it, but they are NOT hand signed by Jewel. Only the limited edition prints are hand signed by the artist-Jewel. The frame is extremely nice (as someone just posted) & has the HGH symbol laser engraved into it. But its the frame they are selling, not a hand signed autographed picture. Things have definitely quietened. I saw Jewel on CNN World Beat, twice, yesterday and today. It was a nice interview. One thing that amused me was her answer to whether she liked her "new" life, new as in not living in a van anymore. "Yes!" was her straight answer. No whining about loss of privacy and other sappy excuses that we hear from many other entertainers. I'm glad that she appreciates the perks she has in life. I always felt that if the entertainer cannot handle the consequences of fame, drop out of the business! Don't whine! If you earn $10M, I do not see much room for complaint. Saw WWSYS clips, YWMFM and Hands. Hope to see the WWSYS on MTV or VH1 sometime soon. I notice her name on the Biorhythm ads. Heeeeey, hope that happens soon! She again talked about her hopes that people will be more caring of others and be more aware of what they did which I think is cool. At the end of the CNN World Beat there was a very brief, "I'm Jewel and you're watching CNN World Beat". With what looked like an amusing small smirk on her face. Looking forward to her next TV appearance! We were given a book called the "Career Handbook" and in it is an interview with Jewel. Here it is: JEWEL Diamond in the Rough: Jewel talks about paying the price for art and career How did you go about getting the industry's attention? J: I didn't. I was singing in a coffee shop and got a very strong local following going, which ultimately resulted in a buzz sort of starting. Without my knowledge, record labels started coming down. The idea of [sending out] demo tapes seemed absolutely impossible. And actually, the more I learn about it, the more I think I'm right. When you send tapes to A&R people they don't necessarily get listened to. Were you surprised how quickly you gained success? J: It took three years on my first album. It took about a year-and-a-half for the first song to become even somewhat successful. When the song first came out, radio said it was unlistenable and unplayable. I actually didn't think it would be successful anyway. My goal was to model myself after the career of someone like Neil Young, who doesn't depend on radio success so much as and ardent following. That way he always had his creative freedom. So I just made an album that I thought would win me singer/songwriter fans, and just let them know who I was as a person, as a kid, really. They kind of accidentally became radio hits. Luckily, I had those three years to prepare for having a hit and dealing with fame. When the labels came calling, how did you go about finding management and legal representation? J: That all sort of just came to me. There was a band in San Diego named Rust and they had a manager named Inga, who was a first-time manager, and they said, "You got to check this girl out." Her car broke down, but she knew this secretary at Atlantic Records. So the secretary drove her down, and they both fell in love with me. The secretary ended up being my A&R Rep and Inga helped me decide on a label. My mom was also involved as my other manager, so I really had somebody on my side. For lawyers, we interviewed several and saw who else they handled. I'm a very instinctual person, I just go off a vibe. In a short time, you've gone from the relatively relaxed schedule of surfing and playing coffee houses to major tour and TV commitments. How does that change your life? J: How doesn't it, really? My life is completely different. I would say that touring 40 cities every 30 days and sleeping three hours a night for three years has been better than waitressing. It's very easy to start feeling sorry for myself because I never sleep, but I do feel very lucky for the chance I've been given, and I've never wanted to take it for granted because I'll end up living in my car again. Do you worry that this may all end tomorrow and you'll need something to fall back on? J: I did for a long time. You know, if you are really poor, its hard to come to grips with the fact that it might not be that way forever. The tendency is to kind of squirrel everything away and keep saving. I've always been smart with money and very involved in the business, I think its something everybody should do. I think its a very terrible attitude when artists think business compromises art because if you're not going to have a hands-on and creative approach to it, you're going to be controlled by it, and then it will be compromising. As far as falling back on something, this is all I wanted with my life. I was willing to die to do something that I loved. I was unwilling to live life without passion. We cannot continue to compromise our pride and our health just to survive. We have to live with passion. That's why I lived in my car. My goal was never to be famous. My real blessing is that I get to do what I love everyday and make a living at it. What sort of things should artists be aware of business-wise? J: Just stay in touch with your money. I see a lot of artists, as cliche as it sounds, getting money and sort of spending it immediately. Or getting one hit, or one near-hit, and thinking they don't have to work or do publicity or tour. I'm not a terribly cynical person, but don't trust anybody too much, always look into matters for yourself. When people know you're intelligent and involved in the business, they generally won't try to pull things on you. But almost everybody I've ever worked with has some sort of ulterior motive. It's just the way life is, don't take it personally or get disillusioned by it. What's the best piece of advice you ever got? J: I think that some good advice I was given was that the record label can be your friend, they're not an enemy. These people are really working late and busting their backs for you. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #39 **************************
