Just a post to show you all what a know-it-all I am. LOL. Sorry, I can't help myself!! ;-) A few people have been posting about requesting more songs from Spirit on the radio, and asking why the h-e-double-hockey-sticks "Hands" is the only song the radio stations play off of Spirit. Well, the answer is simple but lengthy. And what's simple is true and yada yada yada. I'll try to clear it up for you all (if you already know, then you don't have to read, cause you prolly have better things to do). The reason "Hands" is the only current song from Spirit that has hit the radio is because it was the first single. Singles are made commercial (or not, in the case of "Hands") and distributed as merchandise to stores all over the country. This is used as a sort of "advertisement" for the album. The stations pick it up (cause that's what they do, hehe) and play the living kookybaka out of it. Only big-city stations will usually exert the effort into playing something else from an album, and it's usually just for kicks. So, basically, there's no way you could make another song wildly popular. UNTIL those capitalist record-industry bed-wetting types decide to make some serious dinero off of a song. Then they go release another single, a music video is made for it (yippee!), and it's played and played and played until you're ready to gouge out your eyes with a suction cup if you have to hear it again (Celine Dion, eat your heart out! ....Ewww....). And that's how the record gets promoted and rises to number one and goes 10 times platinum, etc, and why there can be such a thing as a number one single (cause they're based on sales). So, now you know! Too many good ones to choose from!!! But eventually, It's Flower. Kinda hard to explain why, and that's weird, cuz I'm usually good at expressing these things, But I'll try. The music, first of all, is beautiful. It's a really unique and plain song, and i liked that. The lyrics are beautiful, and full of hope, especially the "I will survive" part :P Somehow when I hear the song, it just... Makes me feel better, That's why i like it so much I think. I know it may sound stupid, but I'm very effected by these things, for example, I sleep with a papaer that says "I am never broken" under my pillow. It makes me feel stronger in a way. And although Jewel often considers many of her early songs in the batch of "1st songs she wrote", Raven REALLY IS one of the 1st songs she wrote. It's one of her 1st 1991 Interlochen original song demos. At the time it was referred to as "Lullabye" but is the same song. "Raven" was in Jewel's common repertoir before she moved to Poway, CA after graduation from Interlochen & it occasionally popped up during some of the earliest InnerChange gigs. Although dropped from performance repertoir in 1994, "Raven" surfaced again (usually as an encore) in a few early 1996 shows, including the Febuary 96 Santa Cruz gig Tom is remembering above. I often see "Raven" mislabelled on some of those early 1996 circulating fan recordings as both "Footsteps Of Morning" or "Together, You & I". I attribute these mistakes to people guessing the title (as those words are included in the lyrics). It can be easily identified by the 1st line of the song which is: "Fly to me Raven, Black honey into the night". She's not performed it since 1996, although it was recorded again late last year during the "Spirit" sessions.
