Hi all, Well, its obvious to me from my email flow, that the #1 question today is in the subject of this post. With unveilings happening quite a bit this week, one major unveiling occurred last night as Jewel debuted her new touring band on Conan O'Brien. I'm sure most of you recognized Steve Poltz on acoustic guitar, but are curious who the other musicians are in Jewel's new Spirit Tour Band. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about all the guys, but I do recall some previous work by each of them. So, here's some general information about Jewel's newest musicians: Steve George- Keyboards You may recognize Steve's name as he was one of the creative forces behind the band Mr. Mister. His credit list is extremely long & he's worked on countless sessions as both keyboardist & background vocalist. He was Kenny Loggins musical director for several years as well as a player on albums by Bela Fleck & The Flecktones and Elvis Costello. Doug Pettibone- Lead Guitar Doug is a well respected session guitarist & has worked with many "alternative country" artists including Nashville's Joy Lynn White. (I'm not personally familiar with Doug & since I'm writing this post from my own memory, I can't fill you in much more on his career. Perhaps someone can websearch him & educate us all more.) Tony Hall- Bass Tony has been featured on many albums, on both bass & guitar. He turns up on a lot of New Orleans related recordings. The ones that immediately come to mind are Harry Conick Jr, Daniel Lanois & most memorable to me personally--The Neville Brothers. Brady Blade- Drums Brady Blade will be familiar to many of you on recordings by Chris Whitley, Steve Earle, Victoria Williams & one of Jewel's favorites: Emmy Lou Harris. Steve Poltz- acoustic guitar Steve should be familiar to all EDAs as the co-founder of The Rugburns, his solo work as well as being Jewel's most frequent songwriting collaborator. (He'll also be the support act on the Australia, Japan & UK dates already posted on Jewel's website) And there ya have it. All the best, MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 16:48:58 EST From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: Re: "Old" Down So Long & Now Jewel vs Then Jewel In a message dated 1/20/99 3:08:53 AM Pacific Standard Time, Sean35RL@aol.com writes: << She cut out some of the most moving lines from the original song(maybe her new pop audience isn't trusted to know what the word amorpphous means) but besides that it lacks the power and true "spirit" of the Innerchange version. >> She did this during her 1997 tour, where she performed the "Been Down So Long" rock version almost every night. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 12:36:31 -0800 (PST) From: Adia Ahrens Subject: Re: "Old" Down So Long & Now Jewel vs Then Jewel I agree with Sean a 100%! I would do anything to her Jewel play "Been down so long", (my all time favorite) like she used to! The way she plays it now doesn't seem as passionate as the way she once did! I think if you have a great song, why change it? I can see shortening it, but don't change the awesome guitar sound that she had before! God, I loved that! Don't get me wrong, I think Jewel sang last night with a lot more enthusiasm than all of the "Hands" performances put together. It was great. Hopefully it won't get redundant, and seem meaningless while she sings it on her next round of talk shows, like I'm sure "Hands" did! Could you imagine having to sing the same song constantly while you have 300 other songs? Crazy! I love Jewel, I feel sorry for her though, I don't think she likes all of the chaos of being a star anymore. I'd be stupid not to think she didn't love the glamour and the thought of reaching out to everybody which she obviously does. I hope she's as strong as she claims to be and can see through all of the crap. She said in a recent interview that she performs better under pressure, but she doesn't seem happy, I wish we could make her happy if she's not! I just feel that something is missing from that ol' gal! Just my ramble on how I feel! At the end when Conan came out to talk to her on stage, she looked really cute. You can tell that Jewel and Conan are good friends. Especially when she grabbed the pick out of her mouth, grinned at him, and just kinda had that energetic spark about her. She and Conan seemed really glad to see each other again. You could see that Jewel appreciated him since she was basically first seen by America on his show (if I remember correctly). Anyway, that's about all. - -Rob diehlr@purdue.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 19:36:23 -0500 From: Courtney M Gordon Subject: Jewel's unhappiness Dear Angels, I dunno who said it, but yeah, I think Jewel is probably unhappy too. I mean, If I was famous, I think I'd feel kinda alone. Then again, I'm not Jewel (obviously). I suppose if I were famous then yeah, it'd be nice having money, and being adored by a ton of people. But ya can't exactly go out any time you want to and ya don't have as much freedom as before. It's like signing a record contract is like signing away your human rights. love and such Courtney the elagantly wasted angel ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. The only new song I ever hear is Hands (which I hear is #5 on the charts!). So, maybe if we do this some other good new songs will get some attention, and grow in popularity. I guess we'll find out soon! Okay, here's that transcript that I promised you all...from New Music on Much Music Canada....The interviewer is Byron Wong (BW) and of course JK is Jewel. Enjoy! BW: What is the difference between spirituality and religion? JK: Um...I think spirituality is always the foundation of any religion and that a lot of spiritual principles of a lot of religions are very similar. Um...I don't know if there's a necessary difference except each one describes things differently. (Clip from 'Hands' video) BW: It strikes me sometimes, though, that where we are with religion in the world; it is about exclusion and is about making sure that you built the wall and... JK: I think that's why a lot of kids turn away from religion, feel disillusioned and abandoned by God - whatever they believe God to be - instead of just abandoning the rules that people put on God. It's interesting to me that people would limit God - an all powerful God, but if you'e gay you're not getting there.....and God's all powerful but there's limited room in heaven so...only the Jewish get to go sorry. You know (chuckles) or things like that. Umm..always struck me as very contradictary ad I think kids pick up on that at a young age and they learn to mistrust God instead of kind of mistrust the people who made rules about God. (Clip from "Who Will Save Your Soul" video) BW: What is Heaven? JK: Umm......what is heaven? Well...I think hell exists between two ears (chuckles) I think heaven can also exist there. (Clip from the original version of "You Were Meant For Me" not the most frequently aired one) BW: You kind of come from a first record that had a youthful optimism and hopefulness and "Spirit" seems to be a lot more of a wisdom as a woman. JK: I think you naturally grow and develop with time. You naturally get better at your craft of writing; articulating through lyric word and melody. I also got just much more clear about what I wanted to say, and what I think is important. I think a lot and have my whole life, umm..about 'Why am I here?' BW: It seems that maybe your first single, the video 'Hands' touches on that? JK: Yeah, the idea with the single is - and a lot of people take it wrong - the idea isn't that there are no problems, it's how we deal with our problems is everything. Umm.. i don't think we can afford to waste - I don't feel I can afford to waste myself any longer on worrying, on despairing those tings. I need to get real serious about what I can do about it. I know thats cause I've had to face a lot of challenges in my life that I've had to get through, and when I say that I'd like to tell the world that we're okay, it's that when I see young girls that are anorexic or bulimic at age eight or nine years old and feeling like you're doomed already is hurtful, you know? It just dooms your whole life. (Clip from 'Hands') BW: Is that what we can sort of expect from our generation because we're in the tail end of the slacker generation and we're not supposed to have a greater understanding of what's out there? JK: I think kids just got a little bit of the wrong idea. I think that true rebellion is succeeding and I think a lot of people took it, you know, wrong and they think that rebellion means proving your parents right by slacking off or something. (laughs) To me the best way to rebel is to kick ass and to win; basically figure yourself out. Not be held back by your childhod or your past but to overcome. Umm....it's not easy by any means but I think it's what kids are really getting excited about and geared up for. (Clip from 'Intimate and Interactive' on Much Music: Jewel singing a live version of 'Who Will Save Your Soul') JK: It's not okay that I went from being homeless to rich in four years, and it's just a little arbitrary. Um... it's like lightning struck me because I sing but lightning didn't srtike the guy next to me that was homeless. While I'll continue to do all my art and creativity and I feel thankful to live a creative life, I feel like when I'm on my deathbed looking back at my life I'll feel like my success was setermined by how much I was able to help. (Clip from 'Hands' where she started to help the buried man out from under the rubble.) Pretty cool huh? It never ceases to amaze me how much my view relate to Jewel's...I agree with everything she says in this interview and it really makes me feel that much closer to our inspiration....Jewel.
