It was pretty good...they asked Jewel about Spirituality and what she thinks it is as well as heaven and hell...They also played a clip of the first video for YWMFM. I have never seen it before...I like it better than the second so far..! I will try to get a full transcript printed out for you guys, K? I want to bring you all up to speed on previous HGH content as things begin tomorrow. Here's the initial message from Jewel's mom Lenedra, regarding HGH, which as many of you already know, will be unveiled later this week in Aspen & at a major NYC press conference today. During the next week or so, we will begin educating all who are curious about HGH on the website, as well. I'll also continue to keep the EDAs informed as HGH progresses. If you can, soon visit the HGH page on the site & I know many of you will be fascinated & want to participate in the amazing plans for the future. Your interest in HGH is very appreciated & information will begin flowing soon. Here's Lenedra's message for now. Best wishes, MrBB In 1993, before beginning her musical career, Jewel and I had a series of important discussions that clarified our mutual desire to make a difference. These discussions united us in a creative partnership to be of service to humanity and laid the foundation for the development of Jewel's career. Our partnership encompasses the philosophical, ethical, and spiritual covenant that is an integral part of our lives and work. Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH) is the non-profit, humanitarian foundation that has grown out of our partnership. In the spirit of giving back to the global community which provides us with such abundance, we choose to advocate values and principles that improve the human condition and foster the positive spiritual evolution of human awareness and action. We commit ourselves to inspiring, supporting and empowering new possibilities for humanity. In order to identify and develop these possibilities, I established Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH). HGH's vision is to facilitate the ongoing discovery of what it means to be human in the highest sense ... and how to be that. I feel that the opportunity of our times is for each one of us to understand, at a very personal level, that we can have a profound impact on the world in which we live. The greatest possibilities for the transformation of the challenges that face our world exist in the fabric of our lives. If we can learn to become our prayers and hopes, expressing them in our daily interactions, then together we can create a more peaceful and loving world. Lenedra ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 02:29:49 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: "Old" Down So Long & Now Jewel vs Then Jewel This is the second post I promised in "Jewel, Conan, and sstill not the real Down so long. Like I was saying, this new version of the song though one of the better songs on the album and a good, catchy, legitimate song that maintains some of the better lyrcis from the original, in total, pales in comparison to that version. The version from "Innerchange Days" with her solo acoustic kicks the Spirit version's ass. I finally got around to comparing the two and it's not even close. She cut out some of the most moving lines from the original song(maybe her new pop audience isn't trusted to know what the word amorpphous means) but besides that it lacks the power and true "spirit" of the Innerchange version. The longing expressed in her voice. The emphasis on the phrasing in the line about the poor man and flipping a coin with the stress on the man's words instead of that coy-ee-oy-ee-oin thing on the new version, the emotive way in which she says that line in the old version. The slower, more intense way she sang the song instead of now where it's almost as she flies through the lyrics in between musical riffing and fade-ins and outs. If you haven't heard it, find yourself a copy of the old version of Jewel singing this song and then maybe some of the people on this list will realize what some of us veterans mean when we discourage her "change." On to old Pieces of You era Jewel vs new Spirit Jewel. Despite the physical things, the emphasis on make-up and typical faker-looking "beauty"(Jewel really needs to read Namoi Wolf's "The Beauty Myth") compared to the more folkie Joan Baez thing she used to do, which really isn't important, I noticed something recently just looking at the two albums, PoY, and Spirit, themselves. PoY has an opinionatedly direct, philosophical statement on the cover-what we call human nature in actuality is human habit. Spirit's back cover has a bland, vague, new age sounding mantra-We are loved beyond our ability to comprehend. Inside PoY there was poetry-pure, simple yet deep, literary, artful. Inside Spirit there is more new age rhetoric about being a difference, some more vague quotes from other people other than Jewel, and some pointless little symbol. The pictures inside PoY of Jewel are in color. Inside Spirit they are black and white. Inside PoY they are of Jewel jumping, smiling, moving. Inside Spirit she is standing, staring, stagnant. Just some points, believe it or not Spirit is actually a little better album actually since though old Jewel and the Innerchange/Rare Angels/StL/Phyllis stuff etc is truly great material, PoY as an album isn't all that in my opinion. And tonight's performance was just fine, not a transcendental moment or anything, but her best TV performance in a long while. I would love to see her do Down So Long solo on an upcoming appearance though I doubt it'll happen. Later, Sean Hooks "What shall we do, oh what shall we do with all this useless beauty?" - -Elvis Costello "Why does doubt paint blue rings beneath my eyes and stain my skin?" - -Jewel Kilcher ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 02:29:43 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: Jewel, Conan, but still not the real Down So Long Jewel on Conan doing Down Do Long was actually pretty good. Best TV appearance she's done in a while. Performance fine, even a little extra flourish or twist on a vocal here and there. Poltz was playing acoustic guitar in the background, am I right? This song is so much better than sappy Hands, should be a hit single and actually good, something Jewel hasn't had in a single since Who Will Save Your Soul (seeing that the single version of Foolish Games sucks even though it's a beautifully written song). I'll register my dismay later, in another post, at what this song his become because once it was a truly great song and now it is only an above average-good song where it was once truly profound and moving. The Spirit version of this song is a much more commercial version of the great song written in 1994. I guess it's like Billy Joel said in "The Entertainer." "If you want to be a hit you gotta make it quick, so they cut it down to 3:05." This song is just much too short now and cuts out some of the best lines from the old version: ...And like cattle we all stand Just a faceless body lost in this vast amorphous sea Of a thousand people I do not know But really they are no different from me They all have passion, they all have fear They all have intent, confusion, and those sweet moments that are clear They all have aspirations, high hopes and dreams But really they're alone Like me And we've been down so long... But, more on that in another post, like I said. Tonight's version was nice, definitely a step forward from hands. Hopefully as she performs this song at a few more places she might just maybe grace us with an acoustic solo version(even if it doesnt have the extra lyrics which I doubt it ever will again which is a shame, just like she butchered a once great poem "As A Child I Walked" into something shorter and less potent). Oh, and her look tonight was kinda pretty. Though she was made up and glam-ish (Jewel really needs to read "The Beauty Myth" by Naomi Wolf)it's so much better than the atrocious paint-job she did to herself on those spots she's doing on the network the Box, they are running her interviews all week. They are really good too, she just looks so fake, but again, the interview is great. Too bad Conan and her didn't chat tonight, maybe if he spent less time talking to neo-fascist Giuliani, god that guy is creepy, very Orwellian. Anyway, tonight was a positive, a bit of the old Jewel came out and hopefully she continues to improve as she will be touring soon. All you people in the great USA should be lucky you get to see and hear so much of her. I live in Northern Ireland. I've got Spirit ordered, It took me ages to get PoY, and I couldn't get any of her singles sent over on cd. I never get to see her on any program. she's not really big here. The only way I get any info is the Internet, which I can only get at work. You should be lucky to see such a talented person so often. I'm looking forward to her concert in Belfast. It will be great to see her live for the first time. Just wanted to say, If you truly appreciate her and her work, please enjoy it and not criticize it. Sure we are all entitled to our opinion, but please, be happy that you see so much of her, when over her we get practically no exposure to her. So please, just realize how lucky you all are to see so much of her, and I welcome all and any response to this as to how you feel. Thanx and enjoy life John ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 08:16:01 -0500 (EST) From: just-a-girl@lycosmail.com Subject: Re: "Old" Down So Long & Now Jewel vs Then Jewel Hi.. I just wanted to comment on some of Sean's opinions regarding the revamping of some of Jewel's older songs on the Spirit album. I have to admit, I felt the same as he did when I heard Deep Water. To put it bluntly, I was a little disappointed that some of the best lines had been removed in the newer version. I always did like that 'cheap gin from a broken cup' line, but perhaps more importantly, I don't think the new version allows the same freedom she had with the guitar (I am aware she doesn't actually play the guitar in this version but thats beside the point)..Deep Water was always one of my favourite songs because I just thought the passion with which she played the guitar really brought the song alive. Also feel she is a little more restricted vocally. She still seems to hit the high notes, but not as expressively and somewhat spontaneously as she seemed to on the earlier live recordings. Anyway, I just wanted to get that point across. I haven't listened to my Angelffod for a while but now Sean has got me itching to go back and listen..I love nit picking..*lol* BTW...I am sure someone has mentioned this before but I was wondering how many of you had noticed similarites between Jewel's poetry in ANWA and the lyrics to Spirit. It's just that a few people recently had been posting about the meanings to some of Jewel's songs and my advice to them is to read ANWA and see if they get a better idea...we all know poetry is the rawest form of expression and I just noticed some references to 'kissing the flame' among others that I thought might be interesting to compare. Anyway, I've rambled enough..just thought I'd get a few things off my mind Take care of yourselves.. When "Daddy" came on the CD I listened to the line "last night I saw you go out your window with your white, hood, daddy" and it just hit me.. By white hood, did Jewel mean the white hoods the people in the KKK wear? I'm sure this was probably discussed in the more incipient stages of this mailing list, but could someone just answer this for me? My little mind is curious. :) - --Sonora, the mischevious, tom-boyish, in love angel that likes to "clumsly strum" her guitar ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #32 **************************
