(I'm sorry if I offended anyone by not censoring, but I figure that if everybody can figure out what is meant you could just as well say it.) The following is from the February 1999 issue of the UK magazine What HI-Fi? - ------------------------------------------- Jewel Spirit (Atlantic) Just 24 years old and Jewel has recorded her second album of sublimely melodic pop songs. Spirit is full of simple tunes, played superbly, and sung with the voice of an Alaskan angel, albeit one that's certainly lived a little. If your hi-fi's worth its name then Jewel's vocals on tracks such as Fat Boy and the stunning Deep Water should sit right at the heart of the soundstage and sound both dramatic and fullbodied. Her performance is one of simple beauty, but with undercurrents of irony and worldliness that becomes obvious on a system that possesses sufficient expression to convey the subtle intonations in her voice and lyrics. - ------------------------------------------ Chris. I've been around for a while, this is my third time re-subscribing to the list over the past... three years I guess. Anyway, good to be back. I recognize a few people... >By not releasing a double cd, Jewel is not fully utilizing her talents. I disagree here... I say : By not releasing a double cd, Jewel is not fully grossing her financial potential. But is this a bad thing? She's utilized her talents in writing the songs. Just by slapping them on a CD and charging $20, her talents don't become any more utilized. They become more recognized, but didn't we all love Jewel just a /little/ bit more when she was a best-kept secret? I know I did. - - Todd http://www2.truman.edu/~v523 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 16:23:02 -0600 (CST) From: "James H. Right now there is one volunteer in Canada and we'd like to have one or two more. There are occasional small perks and you will be guaranteed to have first generation copies of the tapes we offer but the greatest perk is being able to tape angelfood for people who don't have it. If you haven't done it you should- quite a nice feeling. You will be able to mark yourself unavailable for making tapes at any time (computer crashes, family problems, finals, etc.) but we need people dedicated to the idea of making tapes for people reliably without payment. How does one go about taping a concert? I know it is done, and I am sure there are folks on the list that have taped some of the concerts that are in circulation with the eda's. Is it illegal, or could you get thrown out of the concert. I know some of the soundboard recordings are made by the sound people, but I am talking about audience recordings. I'm sorry if this is my 4th post in a row, but I wasn't really sure of what happened to my post. ANYWAYS, what I wanted to say was: I just started a website that's mainly focused on poetry and song lyrics. So, if anyone has any poems or songs, please send them to me so I can put them up on my page.=) Also-- I could really use some links to other webpages. Under August, there is a "National Bad Poetry Day", and under that, it says read Jewel, and there is a picture of Jewel holding up A Night Without Armor. Just thought everyone would like to know. Also, does anyone think that Entertainment Weekly is just out to get Jewel? They really have nothing good to say about her. I really think that there is one person who doesn't like her there, maybe the editor, maybe not, and everyone likes this person and they always give this person the rights to write anything about Jewel that might come up. They just don't seem to have an unobjectable opinion about her, that's all, and it is influencing others, which, in turn, could hurt her record sales, which means fewer albums for her to make. //\//\att //\dler the "thespian" angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 23:19:50 EST From: KramToad1@aol.com Subject: NJC: Las Vegas EDAs? A store is technically a private establishment, so it's up to the manager/employees whether they want to play music, and what music to play. Especially stores that sell CDs will often play full albums as background music and also to promote their merchandise. The bookstore where I worked over the holidays played Spirit occasionally 'cause it was being sold there. Playing CDs also give a more personal feel than playing the radio, and playing entire albums is a whole lot easier than having a store DJ :) Okay, I'm done rambling. - -Nathaniel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #31 **************************
