Some of you may have heard me mention this before, how 2 of my fav songs of all time were JK's "Amen" and Jeff Buckley's "Halleleujah" (actually a cover of the Leonard Cohen song), both somewhat similar. Anyways, two odd things I found recently led me to believe there might be a bit of a connection betweeen Jewel and Buckley. First, on ebay someone was selling a Jewel/ Jeff Buckley handbill from a club gig in 1994. I believe, apparently she opened for him at least once, possibly more? I wonder if they were acquaintences, though I believe he was from the mid west, so I doubt it. Second, sadly, Jeff drowned in an accident about three years ago. In his mother's statement at his memorial, among other things, she urged Jeff's fans to go out and commit "random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty". Sounds pretty familiar, eh? Anyways if anyone knows about these or other connections, email me or the list, doesnt matter I guess, and if you wanna check out a cool album from a few years back, get Buckley's "Grace". In the 1999 Washington Post 'In and Out' list (that lists, in their opinion, everything popular and everything not), Jewel was listed in the "out" list along with The Brandy vs. Monica debate, Buffy, SUVs, viagra, Calista Flockhart, Tamagotchis, Ellen and Anne, Oprah's "change your life TV" and others. What nerve. You can view the "out" list at http://search.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/WPlate/1999-01/01/054l-010199-idx.html ~Emily, the Sunrise Angel~ *Your eyes burn bright against the frost lit sky, You never seemed more lovely than you do tonight* (I figure it's time to change my Jewel quote around ;) ) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 17:19:31 +0100 From: Subject: New Angelfood? Hi angels, Now that the new Jewel tour is getting closer, I think it's the perfect time to ask a question I've been thinking about since I joined the list almost a year ago. There's a lot of Angelfood tapes that came from concerts and I wonder how they were recorded. Usually it's forbidden to record a concert without permission. So, if I manage to record a concert to make Angelfood, it will be illegal, won't it? Then, if Jewel finally comes to Barcelona in her European tour (I hope so), what should I do to make an Angelfood tape of it? On the other hand, I'm very surprised there's no new Angelfood coming out. As I've read on the list Jewel has been in several radio and TV shows since Spirit came out, why is there not any Radio Angels '98 or something similar? I think all the non-American EDAs (and a lot of the American ones) will surely appreciate that somebody makes some kind of compilation of her best appearances, because we can't hear/see her as much as we want. Anyway, if somebody have any answers to this questions I think they should post the answer to the list, because they interest all the EDAs. Take care, Dani "There is a new army coming and we are armed with faith" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 11:47:52 -0800 From: "K.J. & A. MacPhee" Subject: Re: Entertainment Weekly As to Morrisey's words on the EW article(Specifically, on the Quote by Jewel on Journalists), I was reading her recent Rolling Stone interview and came across these words: "She may sing on her new single , "Hands", that 'Only kindness matters,' but she's got a sarcastic streak, and she's far from naive and dippy" To back that remark up, you have to go back to the MTV music awards(Sorry, I can't remember what awards they were- I lent the tape to a friend), but when she went up to collect the award, and all the fans were cheering, while she was trying to say her thankyou's, she said something like, "Shut-up already, would you?", also recently on the Dave Letterman Show, she compared him to a the Donkey from Pinocchio! Apart from her music and beauty- inner and outer, one of the other things that I love about Jewel, is how non-pop star she is. Just look at her in any interview and see how comfortable she is with the interviewer and guests. she acts just like any other person on the streets. And the sarcasm definitely proves that. I'm ever so slightly disappointed. :( Jewel has over 200 songs!! I really think whoever makes the decision about tracks on singles should tap into this deep reservoir. Tori Amos for example, has released some of her most beautiful songs, "Cooling", "Here in My Head", and "Song for Eric" only on singles. This isn't a complaint really; live tracks are fine. This is my plea for the future: Please put some unreleased tracks on Jewel's singles! :) Julie ************************************************* "Randy lay there like a slug; it was his only defense" - Ralphy, in The Christmas Story ************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 15:12:28 -0500 (EST) From: Jennie Anderson Subject: Re: Behind the Music (fwd) hey guys...after i saw the VH1 ad with jewel sitting by the fire singing "hands" with just her guitar, i emailed VH1 to see if there was going to be an upcoming "behind the music" with jewel that we hadn't heard about yet. just thought i'd share their reply with you all: *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* "And heartache came to visit me." -Jewel, "Hands" *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 12:07:17 EST From: VHWEBSHOW@aol.com To: jenniea@expert.cc.purdue.edu Subject: Re: Behind the Music Thanks for your note. You don't have an original thought in your head." >> I think what Jewel gets frustrated about is the fact that our society has become so gullible that we just listen to everything other people tell us and we stop thinking for ourselves. She just wants people to know her for who she really is and not build up these expectations. Once built up, Jewel would have to be perfect (non-human) to be able to live up to those expectations. An example of this is the fact that there are countless studies in the nutritional sciences to figure out what is good and what is bad for us to consume. As soon as some "breakthrough" finding is put forth; we just take it hook, line, and sinker. A couple years later someone else dissects the original study and reports that whatever we thought earlier was actually false. Then we all believe what this next person told us. What I am trying to say is that people nowadays don't even have a set of ideas that they stand by...they just like to conform to the majority. You are probably wondering how this can relate to Jewel. Well, think of it this way; those who find faults in Jewel do it out of spite. Most of them don't even think for themselves and that bothers her. It all boils down to the fact that she is human and makes mistakes. We all make mistakes and that is what is so great about being human. "If you talk about kindness, you have to be kind all the time: Do you believe that? How is that possible? I get that attitude a lot. People think that if I'm impatient once, that means I'm a fake. ok this can apply to not only those who work around Jewel, but also us EDA's. Just because Jewel seems so kind all the time to us and makes it sound like she wants everyone to be kind does not mean she is always kind. No one on earth can ever be perfect. People in Jewel's position are persecuted if they do not "practice what they preach" It's ludicrous to even think it's possible to always act the way you see fit. I myself attempt to be kind to people, but sometimes it's hardly feasible. Just try being kind to everyone around you for a given period of time and see how hard it really is. Try going to work one day and finding that all of your coworkers are just goofing around and you have to take the brunt of the load. Then you come home and your parents are all over you about not getting your homework done. Then your boy/girl friend calls off a date you had planned....now try to feel obligated to be kind to everyone you see after going through this. You will find it very difficult. I am sure Jewel has things, just like you and me, that get on her nerves. Next time you go against the grain of your morals; just think about the cause of that and figure out. Figure out why you did what you did and if you actually think you can prevent this in the future from ever happening again. I don't know any of you I am writing this to on a personal scale to be able to judge you, but I know that I find it impossible to always be the way I wish to be. Ok I think I better stop now before I bore you all to death. Sorry it was so long. I'm not exactly good at condensing an essay and getting my point across. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 14:47:57 PST From: "jewel jk" Subject: poems what do you think is the best jewel poem? Hi, how are you Angels? I hope you can help me with this BIG favor. It would be super nice from you if you could. I'm in a chorus class, and we are going to do solos and duets in a couple of months. My teacher said that if you wanna sing a modern song from your favorite singer, you can. BUT to do this, you need two things: 1) If you wanna sing a modern song as a solo or duet you can't. You need more than 2 persons to be able to sing this song for the judges. 2) You need to have the song in a "octavo" which is a page where the notes and the lyrics are written in. And it has to be made for a chorus, what I mean by that is that the page(s) have to have a part for the altos and sopranos. But it can't be a music book, I mean, for example it can't be the POY music book that I have. Those of you who sing in a chorus may know what I'm talking about, I don't really know how to explain it because my english is not very good. My teacher said that if you do not have this little "book" you can't sing the song. And instead you will have to sing a classical song. But I would really love to sing one of Jewel's songs. I already have two more friends from my class who would like to sing a Jewel song. But we really need that "octavo". Mr.BB? Mike? Angels? Does any of you know where I can find that?? I'd really apreciate your help, any info that you may have, please send me an e-mail!! Thank You Very Much!!!
