Halo! all you angels out there, I was in a music store today looking at guitars (I can't wait to but one) and I told the guy that I want to play Jewel's music and he said that he is related to her...distantly...his cousin is cousins with Jewel...on her mom's side... I was just wondering about Nedra's side of the family...we always hear about the Kilchers...what is the Carroll history? Just wondering...if anyone can shed some light that would be great. And Mr BB of you're reading this...ask Jewel if she knows of any long distance cousins in Western Canada....if that's not too much trouble of course.... thanks! Looking forward to hearing from you with the info I'm searching for. Thanks Erin *********************************************** Lay me out in firelight and re-invent my name. Just wanted to let you know that i was listening to the top ten on Inter FM in Tokyo, and Jewel's "Hands" was #2. #1 was a Japanese song. So i was happy to hear that Jewel was doing well overseas, too! My friend, Tsugumi, gave me a copy of the Japanese version of Spirit. It seems to be EXACTLY the same except that there is a bonus track: a live version of "Who Will Save Your Soul". i was kinda bummed out--i was hoping for an unreleased song as a bonus... Included in the CD is a Japanese translation of the songs on Spirit and an insert copy of "Hands" lyrics handwritten and picture drawn by Jewel herself. Sorry, i've been away for about three weeks and this subject may have come up in the past: Did anyone record the Vatican city performance? i'm glad to be back on the list! Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! love, karyn idiosyncratic angel kacruz@indiana.edu /\o/\ "/ \" My EDA yearbook entry: http://151.196.82.189/jewel/eda/yearbook/ "You took your coat off, stood in the rain...you were always crazy like that" -- Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jan 1999 11:35:04 EST From: EDAFinfo@aol.com Subject: NJC: Stories of EveryDay Angels, part 3 Our third weekly "angels in action" column brings a Christmas tale and a new request... *** REGINA JUCO (ima@skyinet.net) shares her Christmas gift to Jewel... I live in the Philippines and I don't think that there are any other EDA's from here, so my work had to be done alone. I am a member of the Campus Ministry Choic in the college that I go to. We go carolling every year to raise funds for our projects, but this year, as one of the ministry heads, I decided that making money wasn't something that was important. Instead of keeping the money we made from singing, we gave it to two charities--The Welcome House (a center for battered and abused women), and a very poor communitity that the nuns in my college take care of. In addition to giving them the money, we also had interactions with them and sang for them. Hey, they even sang for us too. It was two days of carolling, from 5pm to 2am on both nights. It felt good to bring the Christmas spirit to these people who appreciated it so much and even gave more back to us than we gave them. It was the first time that I really felt the Christmas spirit. And that was my Christmas Gift to her, these people and God. I hope she likes it. *** NOW FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT... Since it's that time of year when a lot of us make resolutions, we were thinking (uh oh, not THINKING!!) - we'd like to hear some of your resolutions. No, not the ones promising to drop 67 pounds or work out 6 hours a day...but the ones where you're committing to do x number of hours of community service! What?! You didn't make such a resolution? Well, guess what - you officially have until the 11th of January to change or add to your resolutions! Yes, folks, I looked it up in the um, the uh, the official Resolution Manual. SO, what we'd like to hear are your resolutions to volunteer at a soup kitchen, or donate blood, or even spearhead an EDAF event! Heck, we MAY just even help you to stick to your resolutions by *reminding* you of them. :-) Send your resolutions to EDAFinfo@aol.com with EDAF: RESOLUTIONS as the subject and we'll compile them for next weeks post. Thanks, guys! I know the list will be loooong and full of promises of great things to come! Jewel's development as an artist is definitely questionalke and your opinion is as valid as any. I wouldn't say she has degenerated as an artist, but I don't know how much she has SHOWN her development, even though those who have been paying attention this whole time know it's there. And I personally am still at odds over whether this record is a conscious statement of nonconformity(optimism, belief in self and the capacity for change for the good in a time of cynicism) or a mediocre pop record when I want to hear a passionate album with at least a little bit of anger and balance or perhaps even a few remnants of the Fritz Creek Store album(Carnivore, Satellite, etc) songs that would give Jewel some much needed diversity and credibility. I hate the fact that the only stations that play her are top 40 pop. Not that being Spin cover girl should be her goal either, that whole point of view is getting just as shallow and one-dimensional as pop, anyway. But maybe this is just gonna be one of her weaker albums. Her best may be yet to come. I hope it is. And I like Down So Long, it's a good song(even in its new poppy arrangement, go back and listen to the Innerchange version for "real" Jewel) and Do You is a fantastic song, one of Jewel's best writing efforts yet, here her growth as an artist really shows I think. Oh, and she should start releasing more CD singles/EPs, especially in the US, stuff like the foreign Foolish Games single with Everything Breaks and Angel Needs a Ride as Bsides. Tori Amos does that very well I think, and they are both on Atlantic, Jewel should follow her lead on that issue I think. On VH1, they had one of those behind the music things.... They had Jewel talking about the video and song, how she thinks that the only thing that really matters in the end is whether you have been kind to others, and how she wants to show the character she portrays was a bit nervous to help out at first, but when she finally did, she knew if the same thing happened again, she would help. Also, it says about how the video was shot in two days, from 1 pm to 4 in the morning, and it was shot at this old hotel near San Francisco? California, and it was supposed to be made into an apartment... I thought it was pretty cool, and I hope others had a chance to see it. Then it was just little things, about the movie, her mother, the video for "HANDS", Flea playing on "Barcelona". And...that's it, that's 5. Anyway it was cool. She looked pretty she had her hair pulled up...BTW, does anyone know if that is a piece from a larger interview and if so, which one? Oh!
