Just thought I'd gush for a moment. :-) Anyway, I remember seeing a MTV Unplugged Jewel special in late June 97, but of course I had no means of taping it and haven't seen it since. And I've never seen a CD with the songs she wrote especially for that show (some of the other ones were just live versions of PoY). I was wondering if anyone has a tape of that special or knows of a CD that has those songs on there. The only title I remember (that wasn't from PoY) is Boy on his bike. Does this ring any bells for anyone? Please email me or share with the list if you do. Thanks much!! Just wanted to sort of comment on the lastest "debate" on Jewel's changing styles and my best friend, Judy. Just a little background on the situation: Judy and I have been best friend for about 4 years now. Even though we are best friends, we have lots of things different...especially music, even though we listen to some similar stuff. Whatever. Anyways, she had POY and liked it, especially Pieces of You, Adrian, Daddy, and some others. But she would anyways make fun of me (kidding around) about how much Jewel I listened to. I made her a tape of some angelfood to try to convince her how great Jewel's music is. But I never gave it to her, thinking she would not appreciate it. (Almost done :) ) Then, as part of her Sweet 16 present, I bought her a copy of "Spirit", hoping she'd like it and thinking that if she didn't like it, she'd have at least given it a chance. So finally, she listens to it and WHAM! She actually likes it. And then she lets me play other Jewel tapes as well without saying anything negative, except for "I liked the version of this better on POY" or whatever. THE POINT??? People change with musical tastes. Judy did; Jewel is to. Thats fine. I doubt neither are abandoning old styles, just adopting new ones as well. Thanks for listening. My fingers hurt from typing. - -Rebecca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 20:57:19 EST From: KramToad1@aol.com Subject: enough already~NDJIC (no debating jewel's image content)(pleaase read!) Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk hey angels, okay...everyone got their opinion said? good. now, onto something more interesting, more relevant. i was reading all of your posts the other day with my best friend, danie. she's a fan of jewel's, as well, but not a member of the list:( Well, anyway, i got inspiration! i decided to post about my one and only jewel concert experience. it was prolly one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life! i know a lot of you can say the same thing about your concert experiences, as well. that's why i would absolutely love it if i got some responses on this...post your concert experiences, too! you can choose to tell about all of them or only one (like me) and go into lots of detail...emotions, preparations, dining (if that was part of your night). the reason i would like it posted is b/c i know i'm not the only eda who would enjoy reading these. well, if i haven't bored you enough, here's my account of my one and only jewel concert experience...here goes: it was New Year's '98...actually, it was new year's eve (i live in vegas, the concert was in vegas)...but anyways, my closest friends knew how badly i wanted to go to this concert, yet i couldn't afford it...it was too rich for my blood...but my birthday was two days before the concert, so...they surprised me with a ticket! and danie(lle) was coming with me! i couldn't have asked for a more perfect gift! the night of the concert, i went over to danie's house to get ready...i was so excited! i had been a fan of jewel's for sooo long, and i finally was getting a chance to see her live! we did everything to get ready...i changed y wardrobe about ten times! finally, i decided on a folkish outfit with a really neat gypsy skirt. danie decided to get more dressed up, since it was new year's. i decided to do something festive with her for new year's and we both put gold stars in our hair. it was grand fun! we ate taco bell and then, off to see jewel! we got into The Joint (the performing theater thingy at Hard Rock) and commenced to stand in the back behind the last row of chairs (we got standing tickets:( but anyways, the show wasn't starting for awhile and so people weren't quite there yet...eventually, these two women, an older and a younger woman, sat down in front of us. they saw how we longed to sit down, so they told us to steal the seats next to them! at least until the people they belonged to showed up! we got to talking to them, and apparently, the older woman was one of the guitarist's mom from the Rugburns! well, before that night ignorant ol' keren (that's me) and danie had no idea who the rugburns were! sure, i knew who steve poltz was, but i had no idea that he was the lead singer of a band called the rugburns! anywho, she commenced to tell us about her son, and the band, it was so cool! i don't remember her son's name, though...i think they were italian...anywho...the concert began! we listened to the rugburns for what seemed like forever...don't get me wrong, they were great, but i was there for jewel! when she came out...oh my god...it took my breath away! she was in all black and her golden hair...ohhh, it was beautiful...she was simple and elegant at the same time...you know, the way only jewel can be...her first song was...you guessed it...wwsys...but it was so great i almost started to cry....she played little sister, one of my favorites, and she sung silver lining with steve! it was wonderful! and satellite, and sometimes it be that way, all the greats! she was such a goddess... you know what? i'm sick of typing....if any of you eda's care to know the rest of my adventure, do e-mail me...i hope to hear your experiences soon! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 20:05:16 EST From: STAC5984@aol.com Subject: Site Updated Hi angels I just put a list of my angelfood up on my website. With all this discussion about JK losing her naivette/going the way of the divas and changing her music, it aint that bad. I forget who stated this, but look to the lyrics and not the background music to see that she has not lost her basic message. I mean, how many of yall have felt that she has lost touch with her base here, I for one dont believe that. Admittedly with the fame she has gotten, comes a lot of baggage in terms of what she has to deal with. A good example for this IMHO is the band STYX's album, "The Grand Illusion". We forget that with all her fame(and with it her public persona) she lost that feeling of her being our own little Jewel. I for one am happy with her success(admittedly I did miss out on every live experience I coulda had). But fame and fortune is basically just a grand illusion. How many stars would be happy to have their success with the privacy of the private citizen?? I bet everyone of em would. Alot of em wish they could just Sail away. But most just have to much time on their hands and now have to find stuff to fill it up with. Jewel is now finding that to be a fact of life. I would suggest that we look to the stars of yesteryear to find inspiration for how we deal with the stars of today. Dont overcrowd, dont ask, but give. Maybe not to the stars themselves, but to the communities around you. Thanks, I just thought it had to be said. I love Jewel. I have for a while. But I just became an EDA like 3 days ago. I read luna's e-mail and I was a little surprised. What is this Jewel bashing day. I can't believe that you can't accept Jewel's change. I actually like Jewel's change. So what if she didn't play all the song's on "Spirt". I happen to love "Spirt". I really agree with what Alan said the other day. About how her changes are her. And who has not changed in 5 years. I mean we all have changed if you ask me and you all know it yourself too. We all have changed. If we can change, then so can Jewel. Well that is about all I have to say. Sorry if I sounded kinda mean but I guess I'm just a little bitter. "I want to make a difference. We're still just getting started & a lot more is coming soon. In a few days those of you with the FLASH plugin will be able to enjoy a beautiful new www.jeweljk.com all created using FLASH! Streaming audio built in with animated poetry & drawings will all be coming soon. It will be a much more interactive site! I'm putting up a few new dates in the next few days as well. Check the calendar for those. And I'm well aware that many of you are anxious to know more about Higher Ground For Humanity. Soon, soon, soon! We'll soon have a video up on the site you can watch & learn what it is, what goals we have & how best you can help. The first installment of the in depth "Jewel History" will soon be up as well. The "condensed bio" up on the biography page now is just a tiny fraction of what's in store. You'll discover that every unauthorized biography out there is chock full of misinformation & fabrication. It will be the first & only accurate Jewel biography. We also plan to have more audio & video eventually & are currently discussing putting up performances in RealVideo for everyone's viewing pleasure. Many have asked me about putting up the recent Vatican performance. We're discussing that. Also, I know all you Jewel site designers out there are linked to us. We like that! THANK YOU! So we are currently designing a banner link specifically for you. I'll let you know when it's ready & I'll ask you to please remove any "borrowed" banners from the site & use this one. :-) Thanks & keep checking in at www.jeweljk.com We're all back to work & will be getting lots of good things up for you over the course of the next month or so. All the best, Alan(MrBB) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #10 **************************
