ROCK ON! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 20:17:16 -0800 (PST) From: Amy Sorlie Subject: Here it is!!! Enough is enough already--I think some people on this list need a dose of reality, so here it is. Jewel does not care what you think Yes, that's right, she doesn't care about all the opinions flying around this list--she is going to do what she wants and create what she wants, so I think everybody just needs to accept that. The problem with this list lately is that in the rushed need to voice your opinion and blast everyone else, everyone is forgetting the simple things. Famous people go about their lives just like you and I---Jewel wakes up with messy hair and bad breath, and you know what--sometimes she's a bitch! Who wrote the rule that once your famous you can't have emotions and get pissed off every once in awhile?? Jewel writes music for herself, and maybe to some extent for her fans--but I assure you, her happiness comes first--and if she were ever to read this digest, she would frickn' laugh her head off! Some people on this list need to wake up and just get over little miss innocent Alaska because things have changed and no one can stay the same forever---especially when they sell 10 million albums---I'd really like to to put some of you in that situation just for kicks and see how well you deal with it. Go ahead, voice your opinions, that's what this list is for, but the next time you feel like bashing Jewel's clothing, her lifestyle, her guitar playing, or non-guitar playing, think about what your saying and if it will really make a difference. Do you really think by 500 people posting about her NOT playing her guitar she's gonna pick it up a lot more---NO---she's going to do what sounds best in concert, she's not going to compromise the song because more people want to see her playing guitar again---that's how professionals react. You know what's funny about this list now,in the 4 or 5 digests I have to go through everyday, everyone is so quick to criticize and bash---that I CAN'T even remember the last time someone said something POSITIVE about Jewel. Kind of ironic coming from the fans of someone whose philosophy is treating others with kindness, don't ya think? *Amy* ------------------------------ Date: 4 Jan 99 23:43:53 EST From: Jennifer Rivers Subject: Re: [let's all have a go! ;) ] Hello all EDA's-I have read the article in "Vogue" magazine on Jewel and I must say it is quite an excellent article-if you have the time I suggest that you go out and buy it =O) Anyway, I would also like to take a moment to say that "Spirit" Jewel's second album is a huge success in my heart-[Someone wrote that POY was depressing in its own way-but it is a true feeling-sadness is just as true and real as happiness]-Anyway I must conclude that "Spirit" is so wonderful to me-the lyrics-Jewel's voice-everything is just breataking =O) Well all rest easy and take care!! I'm going to be blunt here... will you all stop whining and complaining about it! It's getting really annoying and repetitive. You've all obviously never heard the expression "beating a dead horse". Change is inevitable and change is to be expected, especially in the music world. Just because Jewel may seem to be changing her style/image a little bit since the release of Spirit, it doesn't mean that the QUALITY of her music is changing. She still writes beautiful songs and is by far one of the most talented performers of this decade. You have the right to prefer the "old Jewel", of course... but change is inevitable and you've got to accept the fact that her music will never stay EXACTLY the same. If you really want to hear the "old Jewel", go back and listen to your angelfood and reminisce all you want. But as time goes on, Jewel's style will continue to grow and mature, and it will keep progressing into newer and more exciting things. I'm not saying that Spirit is better than POY, I love them both.... but you can't expect Jewel to stay exactly the same all the time. All the greatest bands in the world tried out new styles and formats, and that's what made them great... the Beatles matured and went from "Love Me Do" to "A Day in the Life".... Led Zeppelin experimented with many different formats other than the normal blues/rock style and gave us "Stairway to Heaven". If these bands had never tried out new things or took steps forward to improve their music, we would have never got to hear some amazing and now-classic songs. So to summarize, please stop dwelling on Jewel's change in musical style and respect her artistic integrity. She's still the same Jewel we all love... she writes excellent music and she's a beautiful human being. And remember... Spirit is only her 2nd album.... she still has lots of opportunity left in her career to try new things. It took the Beatles a lot longer than 2 albums to change their overall sound.... so who knows, maybe Jewel's next album will be even better than any of us could imagine. Time will tell. Until then, just enjoy her music. It's one of the only sweet and beautiful things left in this world these days. Hi all! Let's start with REM. On a recent concert (that was broadcasted on german TV) Michael Stipe (that's the singer, right?) took an acoustic guitar and performed a song solo. Before he started he said: 'Watch out Jewel, here I come!' :-) In the current issue of MAX (german lifestyle magazine) they have a list of the 99 most beautiful women in music, movies and fashion. And Jewel is listed at 25 (now guess what picture they use, two words: Grammy and seethrough). Pretty good I would say (btw Jennifer Aniston is 1st). In the same mag they have a review of Spirit, had yet no time to read it, but they love the record. Christian. P.S. I'll start this with a small clarification. Fan: a very keen supporter (by the oxford's student's dictionary) People, people people! What do you mean "We have brought this on ourselves" ?!? We are Jewel's FANS for cryi'n out loud!!! I am shocked and dismayed (and a bit melodramatic..) What IS going on around this list lately? Wherever I look, someone has a bas thing to say about Jewel, and as a smart little creature once said, and was quoted here before: "If you can't say something nice, you better not say anything at all". Might I remind you of that last bashing wave?!? That would be the one that almost made me leave this list, for the simple reason I wasn't sure I was in the right one. Come on! Give her a chance! Being narrow-minded will get us no-where. I am a jewel fan. And quite a fanatic one, to be honest. Yes, I tell all my friends to buy her CD's. Yes, I am very happy wherever I find another fan. Yes, I want her to be famous and do well. That is why I am a FAN. I'm not sure everyone is comfortable with that concept, and that is such a shame, looking at it from where I stand. Please, you guys, get over yourselves! You are her fans, and even if you aren't anymore, for whatever reason, wish her well!!! Wanting her to stay small and unknown is selfish. She is not our property. And that is a GOOD thing, because that is what allows her to grow and create. We can't stay her only fans forever. That is unfair to her, to us, and to the rest of the world. We are angels, lets act like such. Or at least as decent people should. Without giving my opinion again on changing I think I should give you some info about another very close-to-Jewel-artist: Melissa Etheridge. It's another genre but the way of growing is exact the same as Jewel's. Melissa made her debut album. She sold millions of copies and the critics were outstanding. She performed all over the world and was invited to the most famous tv-shows. Melissa made "Brave and Crazy"..... To me it's not very far from her debut but it didn't do anything. In a few weeks the album was selling half price and it was a disaster. She knew it (I'm sure) but nevertheless she toured and did most of her debut album and less her new album. Still EVERY fan has bought the B&C album. She worked about two years on her third album "Never Enough". It was the breakthrough in the whole world. In Europe everybody got mad about it. Concerts were sold in hours instead of days or even weeks. Melissa had changed her songwriting to where she came from (her debut) because her fans wanted it.... (It sounds like we would like Jewel to do the same?) Her fourth album "Yes I Am" was a complete new period in her life. She came out with her being gay. The album made sense. It was a mix of rocky songs and ballets and every idiot in the world (like me) could live with the diversity of songs. (Is Jewel telling us something too with Spirit? She did change. That is for sure. But we can't relate to the type of changes. Maybe in some years it's getting clear.) The last Melissa Album called "Your Little Secret" was released before she was getting children. Again an enormous change in her personal life. And again a huge success in sales. The songs are catchy, rocky and all have their own story. The sixth album is on it's way and that will be the first album after birth of TWO children and a period of being at home with Julie, her girlfriend. I'm "afraid" the percentage ballets will grow in relation to YLS but I don't care at all. It's a complete story these albums tell the world. And you must take it as it comes :-)). Jewel tells us a personal story with these albums. I'm trying to listen to this album in different ways every time to try to figure out what feelings are basis for these songs. She told the world (on dutch TV) that one song was about a friend being very ill and the personal handling of the situation. There is just more than songs...... And if you don't like the songs I think you will later. I had these sorts of experiences with the Melissa songs. Afterall I think this mail turned out to be a personal opinion anyway :-)) Greetings, Marcel. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 11:59:32 -0500 From: Lynne Schreiber Subject: Illegal CDs Hi Angels! This is from The Times (sometime before Christmas methinks) where several critics choose their best albums of '98: "NIGEL WILLIAMSON ROCK'N'ROLL IS now in its forties but shows no signs of a mid-life crisis. Because no next big thing has emerged to succeed tired old Britpop, the release schedules have never been more diverse, making 1998 a classic year for albums. Great debuts came from Eagle-Eye Cherry with Desireless and Rufus Wainwright, very good ones came from Gomez with Bring It On and Ghostland. LPs still likely to be spinning into the next millennium include Natalie Merchant's Ophelia , the late Jeff Buckley's Sketches for My Sweetheart, the Drunk , Sinead Lohan's No Mermaid , Billy Bragg's timeless Mermaid Avenue , PJ Harvey's Is This Desire? , Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs and leading them all, Spirit , the second album from Jewel, the best female singer-songwriter since Joni Mitchell. Yet paradoxically in such a strong year the only perfect ten goes to Bob Dylan's long-awaited and legendary Live 1966: The Royal Albert Hall Concert , quite simply one of the defining moments in modern cultural history. " This is from E! Online "A Gem Dandy... Just when everything seemed right with the world, it turns out Jewel isn't simply another dippy hippie chick. Despite lyrics like "What's simple is true" (attention Jewel: the dream where I bag Bridget Fonda with a croquet mallet is exquisitely simple, but as far as I can tell you, not true), the former street urchin seems to have grown a brain. In the December 24 Rolling Stone, Jewel discusses quantum physics and intelligently rebuffs her critics. "I [keep] trying to figure out why people in the press thought I was stupid," she says. "I've noticed a belief [among the press] that optimism stems from naïveté. I believe optimism is a choice. Cynicism isn't smarter, it's just safer." Happily, Profound Jewel gives way to Dopey Jewel a short time later, setting the world's axis straight again. "[Jelly Bellys] should be its own food group," she muses. "All those flavors and colors. Then you start combining them--cream soda with a cherry on top, or a juicy pear with a strawberry." Ahhhh. That's better. And a happy 1999 to all.
