New album! Why hell lets go get it not because we've heard so much good stuff about it but because dammit she must be the same Jewel she was forever ago on PoY. WHAT? She... changed?! WHy no! That can't be, that simply cannot be! She's in her early twenty's now and she's not the same 19 year old she was on PoY? How did that happen? She got older?! Oh my god it's the end of the world! We're all gonna die because she's writing lyrics with the same depth, but there's more guitars, that's not okay. She's gonna change, she's gonna stray from us. We do NOT own her and we can't control it. The media is gonna swallow her everytime she does something new. the reason we felt so close to her before is bacause she was "Who? Jewel? Uh... Who?" not too many ppl knew her. she gets albums, books, etc... and ew encourage everyone to... "Hey, get out there, get that album, request that song so she can get more $$$ and expose her to more ppl!" Well, we got what we wanted. We showed her to the ocean of ppl, and it took her in. Just like we wanted. This is what we wanted and now that we got it, we're complaining. Maybe we didn't think of this earlier, but it came with the package. Sucks to be us, but I'm still a diehard fan. I've heard Spirit, even though I don't yet own it, I loved it. Maybe we're not as close as we were, but she's now the superstar we wanted her to be. love and lollipops Courtney the bitchy angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 15:13:48 EST From: Yssa8377@aol.com Subject: Anybody looking for Spirit chords? Howdy fellow Angels, I noticed that a lot of you guys are looking for chords. Last month I went to Sam Goody and I found a music book for her new album "Spirit". It was priced at $19.95 but it sure is worth it. The front cover looks just like the album. It has piano/vocals & guitar chords for those of you that are intereste. Check it out! That's funny, cause I only remember seeing her play the guitar on *2* of the many (8 or 9?) recent TV appearances. Aren't those considered "gigs"? One's that she used to ALWAYS play guitar on. I was actually surprised to see she still *could* play the guitar! It almost didn't even look right, considering she seldom plays it now. One can only expect to see more of that in her upcoming tour. I'm willing to bet there will be many many more songs on this tour where she doesn't play anything. Besides just the songs "Hands", and "Foolish Games". I bet half her show will be her without a guiter. Jewel without her big blue (or any other) guitar. - ----------- Alan wrote: "However, I think almost everyone here agrees that Jewel is (& probably > always will be) far more captivating LIVE than in the studio. Can some one explain the relevence of this? > Is this some cultural thing that I have missed because I am Australian? Henry Miller and Anais Nin were writers... their works a few decades ago were difficult to publish on charges of obscenity... I have only a passing knowledge of them, but their works both seemed in no small part to be concerned with their own affair with one another... and in my pasing knowledge of that, I've found nothing admirable about either of them. I know some people find cruelty romantic, but... I don't know exactly why Jewel would want to be Anais. | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 17:05:45 -0400 (AST) From: Jesse A McDonald Subject: I'm taking everyone's turns On Sun, 3 Jan 1999 ABershaw@aol.com wrote: > So...... In fact, isn't it the exact > opposite of selling out? I don't remember seeing too many people complaining about the lyric content... except maybe me... oh that's right, I did complain didn't I... (I honestly forgot) Okay, but I'm not complaining that she's too happy, I'm complaining that some of her new songs are leaving me cold. I don't think anyone said her new lyrics were more commercial, did they? The sound of the production is more commercial, and no-one can deny that. I agree that releasing another POY just because POY made crazy money would have been wrong. I don't think that she did anything WRONG making Spirit, but surely you can understand that a lot of what attracted people to her via POY and most Angelfood has been muted or lost for most of Spirit? The sound is less personal. The stories are less personal. Everything seems soft-lit light a soap opera. Well, not everything. Fat Boy and Enter From The East stick out as throwbacks... I mean, I don't compare them favorably to anything on POY (maybe Morning Song), but they give me a sort of welcome relief from the smothering production on the rest of the record. Not that I hate the rest of the record... but it doesn't feel right to me. Just because it's all more commercial and less to my taste than POY doesn't mean that Jewel's selling out or making crap... it just means she has different musical ideals than I do. So be it. Sucks to be me, I guess. | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 22:11:32 -0000 From: "Nosh" Subject: RE: JewelAmp Goto http://www.winamp.com/htdocs/Human-5.html to get the skin. Jewel is up on stage, her make-up all done to prefection, her hair is assorted shades of blonde, styled of course, she's holding a microphone, but no guitar. However, there are sounds coming from the stage, those being the sounds of another person on a guitar, and another on bass, drums, cello, etc, etc, etc. The sound is nice, full, very blended. Nothing really comes out as striking though, but the overall blend would seem to be something one could no doubt here over the radio waves. She doesn't tell many jokes, but rather sticks to a strict set list, going though song after song. Through the 20 or so songs, she may pick up the guitar a few times. But when she does, her playing isn't even heard...for the sound of her backing band is much louder and more noticeable than that of Jewel's guitar. The sound is well, more like that of a Mariah Carey/Celine Dion/Whitney Houston/Madonna. Sound meaning the overall sound, the quality, and how it blends. Again, nothing really "bad", yet just not very original. Picture all this occuring, in front of about 100 people, on a Wednesday night, at the Innerchange Coffeehouse. In walks a rep from Atlantic records who had heard she was a talent worth listening to. Does she get a record deal that night? Ha!!!! No way in the world. Why not? Cause we already have our Alanis', our Whitney's, our Mariah's. But what would we be missing? Hmmm...those all too authentic sounds of some girl named Jewel Kilcher. Something that would catch the Atlantic rep's ear, and would thus offer her a record deal. For if it weren't for *that* Jewel, ya know, the one that sounds nothing like the Jewel of today, then she'd have no record deal, not much of anything. My point being, what she's doing now isn't what caught that rep's attention. What she's doing now is what 99% of all other female pop singers are doing. Not original at all. Maybe this has been her dream? Maybe not. But I do know one thing, where she is now, isn't the way it was when she got signed to that record deal. Makes you wonder. It's sad in a way. Regardless of the reason it happened. One can only hope that one day, she'll be back to that stage again....just her, her guitar, several hundred fans, all singing the lyrics to every song, none of which are termed "singles". None of which have videos on MTV or VH-1, and none of which are backed by a 5 piece band. Those will be the days. The first thing I have to say is can we please not have another row like the last one?! Anyway, I'd really just like to put in what I think here. When I first heard Spirit, my first reaction was "Jewel grew up!!" Now to me this was disconcerting because Jewel was my innocent inspiration. She was everything that we all could be, and in fact, she still is. POY was my encouragement, and from its message, I, too, grew. I believe that from taking on Jewel's message, I have become a better person, and, more practically, a better guitarist! LOL! I also miss Jewel's raw sound from POY, and although Spirit is more polished, I think that saying it's "commercialised" is going a bit far!! Now I think that Jewel grew, and instead of fighting it, (we can't change it) perhaps, we should grow too. But with Jewel, not against her. Well - if you can't beat 'em; Join 'em!!!
