["Jason Grovert" Subject: The way I see things. Hey :) This is going to be a bit confused, and might be slightly long, so please bare with me :) I've been reading all the posts about Jewel changing lately, and tried to figure out how I felt about the whole thing, and I'm still not sure I know. I bought "Spirit" as soon as it was out here, about a month or so back, and listened to it. It was... Different. Very very different from the Jewel I knew. But I grew to like it, at least most of the songs on it. (I actually think "Hands" is a great song :) ) I wasn't happy with Jewel not doing everything on her own like before, but I wasn't that unhappy with the new sound. The other day I was sitting around, and I was listening to "Spirit", and I suddenly realized since I bought it I haven't listened to any of my angelfood tapes. So I took "jewelstock 3" and played it, and then a few more. What that did, was make me understnd something. I listened to "Flower," my favorite song, and I got that feeling.. You know, when you listen to a song you really like, and you haven't heard it in a while... Well, nothing on "Spirit" could be as good as that felt. I do miss the o'l jewel, the one who would hang out with fans at the coffe shops, and talk and tell funny stories during her shows, but I'm willing to give this new one a try, and see where that takes her, and me as a fan. I don't know if Jewel herself will/has changed, or if it's just her music, but I'm hoping she is still the same sweet person we all love. That's about it for now :) Sorry that was so long. Oh-btw, a lot of ppl have asked me about this-so no, I don't know where the quote at the end of my emails came from. Soemone emailed it to me once (she was a friend from the list) and she left before I could ask her , Sorry :) Loads of Love, Abby A rare angel lost among you {\o/} /_\ ~*~Dance like no one is watching and love like you've never been hurt~*~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Jan 1999 18:51:28 +1300 From: "Kim Lees" Subject: Re: Please Read: My reflections on Jewel > But that was the 1st album, that was what, 5 or 6 YEARS ago? And four actually... :-) this "Spirit" vs POY discussion is kinda like a one I was having with another EDA a few days ago... basically, I think what most people don't like about "Spirit" is the commercialised sound of it, not the fact that it's not an acoustic album like POY was... Jewel hasn't "gone electric"... she was using electric instruments way back in songs like "God's Gift To Women" which is as old as POY... the thing is, most of the songs on "Spirit" have been recorded with that kinda dull radio sound which usually guarantees airplay but often doesn't do the song full justice... a perfect example is "Innocence Maintained" - compare the "Spirit" version with the "JewelStock" version and you'd hardly believe they were the same song... this post is not about "Spirit"-bashing... hell, I like the album, but only in the way I'd like, say, a Sheryl Crow album (no offence - I have 2 of them...), whereas POY - which was recorded with the raw sound Jewel envisaged when she wrote the songs, without any intention of being played on radio and selling millions of copies - has a kinda "classic" quality about it which seems to happen very rarely these days... oh, and about Jewel sying how she hates POY... all artists do this - it's probably the one thing that annoys me the most about musicians and actors... they will always say their latest project is their best yet and put down their previous work... I don't know whether they are just being overly self-critical with the benefit of hindsight or whether they think it will help sell their latest album/movie, but it's gotta be one or the other... :-) Kim Lees Your New Zealand Angel Standing By ICQ# 9270797 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ check out Kim's JEWEL Shrine... http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stadium/7485/jewel.html includes a Real Audio section of over 100 songs - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Cause being in love just means calling places When you can’t afford the bill" Jewel Kilcher - "Tiny Love Spaces" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Jan 1999 04:38:30 EST From: Stevie3103@aol.com Subject: jewel banners & jewel web ring? I really like the new Jewel, music wise. I used to think that she was this great person, which she may still be, but I had an eda write me a story to explain why they weren't one to like Jewel as to what she has grown into now. She mentioned to me about Jewels bad attitude. i won't go into details, I may change the story, though not on purpose. It just wasn't my story. But I feel that a persons maturity in her music was partially due to her fans, they are the ones that helped her grow, but she was rude to a few of them for no reason. I am giving her the benefit of the doubt to think she was having one of those days, which we all have, but I still don't agree that that should have happened. I am still a fan of hers, so don't get me wrong. I just look at her in a different way. sorry if this doesn't make much sense. Jackie, the thoughtful angel. Jackie1kjs@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Jan 1999 03:12:03 -0800 (PST) From: Erik Johnson Subject: A Changing Jewel? I think that this dislike of Jewel's changing image is one of the things that Jewel would not want to happen. That is, people want her to fit their images of her and their preconceptions. She wants to be herself. After all, images aren't truth, we all know that. And... most of our knowledges of Jewel are as unclear (incomplete) as a Picasso, we can judge change. I tend to believe that those things which are basic to her and make her who she is haven't changed. Even in respect to her music. The important things (to her) haven't changed. She wants to touch people. Right? So does it matter (to her) what music she sings to as long as people listen and people are enriched? She's not unduly faithful to music, she's implied that at times, it's not why she started music, and hey, she's done poetry and a movie, and HGFH, etc. She seems to be about doing some good for the world, first, before making music that people really like (outside of the reasoning that good music is listened to more and so there is more chance that her messages of truth and life will be heard and do good). Well... my opinion- hope you like it, cause... too bad you've already read it. (c: Erik The Idealistic Angel Check out my website, there's poetry, some essays, and the beginnings of a Jewel page. Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Jan 1999 16:55:26 EST From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: opinions & rambling-my turn :-) Hi all, One thing that's kinda interesting to me is reading "between the lines" on what people who are disappointed with "Spirit" have to say. Those familiar with my opinions know I support change as an artistic necessity, but I'm going in a different direction this time, I promise! I find it kinda funny how many of the so called "veteran" fans always state either "I'm a vet fan & I followed Jewel since POY was released" or "I'm a songwriter & Jewel was a major inspiration to me" before they go on to say that they are disappointed/surprised in Jewel's current direction or less than enthusiastic about the "changes". These statements surprise me not because I disagree or really care that they don't enjoy it as much, but because I wonder were they ever really paying attention? What do I mean by this? Well, it seems to me that even before Jewel's 1st album was released, she was clearly saying her goal was to write songs that gave people hope & were inspirational. All the early vet fans heard this hundreds of times BEFORE many people cared about Jewel & its those same elements (among others, of course) that first attracted many people; along with her voice & sense of humor. (It certainly wasn't her guitar playing skills!). She's stated this same fact in countless interviews & almost every single EDA has heard & read this over & over again for years now. So... if you are surprised or let down with "Spirit" AND claim to be a vet fan, where you ever really paying attention? Her current lyric content is actually exactly what she always said she wanted to do. It all goes back to the original question Jewel's mom Lenedra asked her: "What do you really want?" Jewel's answer most of you know by heart now.... She said: "I want to make a difference. I want to sing so that people will feel more hopeful, so that they understand themselves better, so that they feel connected with each other." Jewel began this specific focus in 1993 (That's SIX years ago now) So...... Far from CHANGING direction, she's actually stayed focused & committed to that vision, if you ask me. Am I way off here? How can that be considered selling out? In fact, isn't it the exact opposite of selling out? OK. I know many of you are now thinking; "What about the album production & her playing guitar on only two "Spirit" tracks? Lets try an experiment. Lets say YOU recorded a surprisingly successful album that was primarily just a tape of you playing unaccompanied in some coffeehouse. OK. Feels good so far, huh? (I like your album & I'm telling everyone I know about it, by the way. Can you hook me up with any of your rare early promo CDs? Please?) ;-) Your album just keeps on selling & exceeds your wildest expectations. Eventually, a few years go by, you have fans galore & its time to do your follow-up album. The budget is not an issue this time & you basically have two ways you can go. One option is you can do the same thing as your 1st album & play primarily by yourself & record it. Thats certainly easy enough to do, isn't it? The other possibility is to enjoy working with your pick of whatever musicians you fancy working with. Almost anyone you can think of would be available to you. You can assemble your "dream band" & they'll play YOUR songs & arrangements, while you sing. What would you do? Man, that seems like a no brainer to me! Who can say they'd honestly prefer NOT to work with your pick of musicians this time around, given that choice?? So, my point is addressing those bumming out to Jewel's limited guitar playing or other instrumentation on "Spirit". It's like if you were an "average guitar player at best", wouldn't you ENJOY having the guitarist of your choice & your "dream band" helping you realize your album vision? I know I would! I'd want to concentrate on what I enjoy best (In Jewel's case singing) & have all hand picked musicians helping me on the studio recordings. Of course, nothing is for everybody & everyone is welcome to their opinion on the album, but I thought I'd just point out that Jewel is doing exactly what she clearly said she'd do all along. It surprises me that many find "Spirit" to be such a big CHANGE & write as if they are lamenting something lost. (I hope to see your smiling faces at the shows anyhow :-) I can relate to those lamenting the loss of enjoying small intimate shows but lamenting content change & musical loss; I don't really see it. (It's just an album afterall & you know Jewel still plays her guitar at every gig, so what's the big deal there?) However, I think almost everyone here agrees that Jewel is (& probably always will be) far more captivating LIVE than in the studio. I also think once Jewel begins touring again, many of you will discover that musically, nothing was lost & everything gained. Here's to music galore in 1999!
