We've all heard the stories of Jewel's early struggles by now, most of them centring around her eating peanut butter sandwiches and living in a van. After a year and a half of persistent touring, her 1995 debut album, Pieces of You, broke and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. It's a long way from Alaska to the recording studios of California, but the woman seems determined to make an industry out of her folky self. Spirit shows a more polished Jewel -- she's older, wiser, and eager to preach love and goodness. Long-time Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard was enlisted to produce, and a variety of session musicians pop up on the record, notably Jude Cole on acoustic guitar and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea on bass. Gone is the bittersweet naivete of "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games", replaced by lessons learned ("Deep Water") and even lite cynicism ("Down So Long"). Carefully embellishing the 13 tracks, Leonard underscores the singer's newfound sophistication with a glossy pop production job. Jewel gets sober about herself on the standout "Barcelona" ("Me and my shadow are wrestling again/ Look out stranger, there's a dark cloud coming in"); and the power of the individual is the theme of the Tori Amos-like first single, "Hands", which was co-written by Leonard and Jewel in the studio. It's fitting that Spirit was recorded near a stable where Jewel was able to sneak away for horseback-riding sessions -- visions of Liona Boyd were dancing through my head as I listened to the record. And it's obvious after this second release that the songwriter is deeply rooted in true folk idealism: on the nonmusic side of things, she and her mother recently founded a nonprofit organization called Higher Ground for Humanity to "support, inspire and empower new possibilities for humankind." Spirit is annoyingly contemporary with its themes of self-help and self-love -- both noble but overexploited ideas in this age of Oprah-mania. But even though Jewel may be alone out there singing her fragile calls for peace and love, with her growing list of worthy causes and accomplishments, cynics (like me) may one day be her greatest champions. review by Kim Bingham, December 10 - 17 1998 issue ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 01:53:29 EST From: Nubbay@aol.com Subject: Our Flower: Jewel Hi All I Have Changed My Server (once again) and i would like you all to go to my Jewel website and look around and go to the top frame and click on "contact" then on the page that pops up click on "Comments On My SIte" and fill out the form telling me what u think, i would greatly appreciate it ALOTthe URL is.. * http://www.geocities.com/Southbeach/Inlet/8906/frames.html * Thanx Alot You Guys (And Gals) Love You All, Zac ~*The Heartbroken Angel*~ (changed my angel name, used to be ~*The Astro Angel*~) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 08:14:47 +0100 From: Marcel.Ummelen@dsm-group.com Subject: concert Italy.... I don't get it. Hello everybody, I don't get it. The concert will be broadcasted by Canale 5. Does that mean that the announcement of Rai has been deleted? And was that announcement at the site of RAIUNO >not < the one where Jewel would sing in. WDR3 has announced the same show indeed. But if Jewel isn't singing in the RAIUNO programm then WDR3 (German channel) won't broadcast Jewel either. In matter of fact I think it's best to record the show from WDR3 and guess that it is the right thing to do. Personally I bet on two horses: Rai and WDR3 so if any of them has it I will be lucky. The whole thing is confusing and maybe it's best that Max will help us out here. Maybe you are able to send two tapes (of Canale 5) to other european EDA's? The other two EDA's will provide European EDA's with this and the other one will send a copy to an EDA in the US. Max, are you willing to send two copies to other EDA's? Hope this will help in the struggle to find stations that will braodcast our star. Happy Christmas and a great Newyear! Marcel. Angel From The Netherlands ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 12:32:25 PST From: "Nico Pham" Subject: Jewel: Germany-tour 99 / Matthias Hoffmann&Marcel Avram Hi angels, Today another big German concert-organiser after Marcel Avram, Matthias Hoffmann, has been condemned today of tax fraud to spend 5 years and 8 months in jail. Following news reports, SEVERAL tours of int. artists have been cancelled because of the increasing tax-controls. This includes, following the news, the three "big" companies that also organise Jewel's tour in Germany. Is that the reason why there are still no tourdates set for Jewel? I hope not and hope the best... I was walking through the magazine store when I went to the mall yesterday, and what catched my eye as I'm skimming the top shelf? Jewel on the cover of Vogue!! I immediately get it and flip through it while I'm waiting for my sister to meet up with me.. I loved the picture! It even has a pic of Jewel with Chris Douglas, her boyfriend.. They called him a cattle roping stud from Montana, or something like that.. I read the article when I got home at midnight, and I love that just as much as the pictures.. I thought it was going to focus on her clothes (it IS Vogue, after all..), but it really didn't.. I love the end.. I'm not going to give it away.. But does the name Beau Sia ring a bell? That's the riddle of the day, kiddies.. Now go get the magazine.. It's awesome! // I also got the Pop Culture Presents book.. It's pretty good actually.. I learned some new things about Jewel's life, despite the frequent typos.. I got it for the pictures (full page pic on every other page, but it's pretty good.. By the way, the Jewel picture in the Making Faces calendar is really good.. I didn't have enough money to get it, but I'll make sure to get it next time I go to the mall! As promised by Alan (Mr.BB) and The EveryDay Angels Foundation, here is the first of a weekly "everyday angels in action" column to share how other EDAs are working to make the world a better place for us all... *** When asked on a recent AOL chat what the greatest thing a fan has ever done for her, JEWEL answered: "EDAs started doing community service instead of giving me presents for Christmas and birthdays and things...seeing them give back is probably the most rewarding thing for me." And there you have it, Jewel fans -- what your favorite performer wants for the holidays! :-) *** TARAH LYNN (Jueltoo@aol.com) of South Florida volunteers at a non-profit organization called "Handicapped and Horses", where disabled children come to a designated ranch to ride horses. Tarah usually goes on Wednesdays after school to groom and saddle the horses, then teaches the program participants basic skills to maintaining a horse. They do laps around the ring, walking on the side of the horse to make sure the kids don't fall off. They sometimes do therapeutic exercises to stretch the kids' muscles while on horseback. "WHOA...what a rewarding experience!" Tarah says, "It's all very worthwhile to go home knowing you helped brighten their day...even just a little." 0;) *** For Jewel's Christmas present last year, GREG (gregthomaswhite@hotmail.com) spent Christmas Eve at a homeless shelter helping out with whatever he could, then sat down with good ol' "Jem" (his acoustic guitar) and played a few songs of his, as well as covers of Steve Poltz and Jewel tunes. They seemed to enjoy it, so since then he drops in every now and then. Greg will be going this Christmas Eve, and would love to be able to get together with other Canadian EDA's to do something... *** SUSAN (sskolak@indiana.edu) volunteers at a local arts center, and donates her salary towards a scholarship fund to help children to attend classes. The more she works, the more she contributes to many areas at the center. As a teacher assistant, Susan sees first-hand the affect that participating in an art class has on children. "Whether it is pottery, drawing and painting, or poetry, I love being able to contribute some happiness to these often too-stressed kids. I have even managed to inspire a few kids to do things they never thought possible," wrote Susan. "It is a great gift to me that I can instill hope, or give a reminder that hope is not lost, in someone who thinks all hope is lost. It is one of the saddest things to see hope lost, especially in these children. They are so young to have the burdens they do." "I am glad to be of some help to them, what little help it may be. It keeps me grounded, centered. Jewel inspires me, I inspire them... hopefully they will want to give back what is given to them someday. Wouldn't that be great!" explained Susan, "I think that goes on now though. Everyone wants to give back what was given to them, it's just that not everyone was given love and support and inspiration... Hmmmm....so sad. But, hopefully that will change with efforts like the one I and many (but sadly not enough) others work so hard to put forth." *** PHILIP NELSON (philip1@provider.dcci.com) recently started a program at work to collect clothing and necessary items for the families that lost EVERYTHING in a flood in San Antonio, Texas. In less than a week, they collected more than a truckload of useful items! *** One of our regular EDAF food bank volunteers, BILL BARTHOLOMEW (wdb@obl.bidmc.harvard.edu) reported a severe shortage of toys for the Boston area "Toys for Tots" programs. Unseasonably warm weather has been blamed for reduced donations nationwide, so if your local drop boxes are still in place, try to help out with a toy or two! Keep those e-mails coming in! If you are currently involved in any humanitarian effort, please drop us a note at EDAF@smoe.org and inspire your fellow EDAs to do something equally as rewarding. Large or small, ALL EFFORTS ARE SIGNIFICANT to us. What are YOU doing? We want to know! Segment one was originally supposed to air on December 17, but with the bombing of Iraq/impeachment news blitz happening that day, segment one was bumped & broadcast this past Monday morning instead. Segment one featured the interview & "Hands" live with Poltz & her TV band. Segment two is likely airing tommorrow (or later this week) and features Jewel & Lenedra singing together.
