So here's for third time lucky all. - -Sang. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 23:10:01 PST From: "David Trinh" Subject: Sydney Jewel Contest I was listening to Mix-FM (106.5MHz) Sydney and I heard a contest where the prize was spend a week in hamilton island (a resort island off Australia) with Jewel, The Corrs blah blah (insert a list of stars here). Apperently somebody's won this. Does anybody know anything about this? The prize seems highly dubious since The Corrs aren't anywhere near Autsralia when Jewel comes down here. Also a number of stars and fans jammed up at a resort for a week doesn't seem likely as the cost to bring stars there for the contest would be very high I'd imagine. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Dec 1998 18:03:44 +0800 From: "Jean" Subject: Jewel Interview This interview can be found in 'The New Paper' (in Singapore) Gem of a Person Jewel is back with her second album, Spirit. The Alaskan singer-songwriter hopes the album will "provoke thoughtfulness and spirituality". "I wanted to portray with the music the idea that we are all naturally spiritual and don't have to try; that there are similar spiritual principles that are the foundation of all religions; tolerance is important." Jewel Kilcher, 24, sounded almost evangelical as she exhaled her answers over the phone. Sighing now and then, she took her time to reply, pausing to compose her thoughts. She spoke slowly, breathily, and the pitch was child-like. So is her faith in the human race. "I believe in people. Some are very lonely, some are very happy. I want people to be well, I want people to understand themselves and have peace within themselves." You'd half expect her to have wings. But even for her, not everything comes easily. "Some days are good, some days aren't good. The intention is 90 per cent, the rest is discipline and growing and mistakes..." "The intent or desire to do well, it doesn't mean that every day you will do well, it means that ultimately in the end you will probably do well." she has opted for what she calls a "chosen optimism". "There are two kinds of optimism - one is denial, which is blind optimism that denies all problems and says everything's okay. And then there's informed optimism which is aware of problems and decides not to become focused on what change is possible." Even, while just "driving around", her interest in people keeps her eyes, and mind, open. "I remember seeing these kids in Philadelphia who lived in project housing, very run down. They were playing with rocks because they didn't have any toys and they had an American flag in the window that was made out of cardboard. They were sort of very patriotic to a country that seems to have abandoned them. A general optimism somehow, in spite of everything." She just doesn't seem like a pop star, somehow, in spite of everything. - -Jeanette ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ I do not regret the things I've done, but those I did not do. We wanna know! Hi all, Over the past few weeks I've recieved many inquiries regarding what EDAs can do for Jewel as a Christmas present. I'll let Jewel speak for herself by excerpting something she said last night on the AOL chat: Question: What is the greatest thing a fan has ever done for you? EA Jewel: EDA is Every Day Angels. EA Jewel: EDAs started doing community EA Jewel: service instead of giving me presents EA Jewel: for Christmas and birthdays and things. EA Jewel: And seeing them give back is EA Jewel: probably the most rewarding thing EA Jewel: for me. And there you have it. :-) Speaking of which....The EDAFoundation enjoys keeping track of EDA volunteer efforts both large & small. ALL ARE SIGNIFICANT to us. Please watch for posts from Dennis, Amy & Tom regarding how you can join in on EDAF projects & start projects to help in your own communities. They'll soon be informing you more about all this as well as recognizing existing efforts. In the meantime, if you are currently involved in any humanitarian efforts, please drop the EDAF a note about them at EDAF@smoe.org. What are you doing? We want to know! We're a little confused about her politics, though. She heads to Rome this weekend to join Manhattan Transfer and Spice Girls wannabes Cleopatra for the sixth annual Concert for the Vatican. Then on Jan. 25 she plays at Madison Square Garden in New York with Paula Cole and others in a benefit for Zero Population Growth, an organization which pro-lifers say promotes abortion as a means to limit population growth. We're not so sure the Pope would approve.... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Dec 1998 13:03:25 EST From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: solo acapella Lenedra Hi, I enjoyed "The View" today, but they should've done that "candle burning ear cleaning" technique segment on the sound engineer who neglected to turn Jewel's mic on during the "Rudolph" duet with Lenedra, hehehe... Still it was kinda nice hearing Lenedra sing it solo accapella! ;-) MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Dec 1998 13:22:48 EST From: XrowdiusX@aol.com Subject: The view... Well I just caught Jewel on The View... it was a good showing... with all the talk of her changing and being bitchy..... She had her hair pulled back, and was quite polite to everyone... When Jewel and her mom sang, Jewel's mike was set alittle too low.. but other than that I really enjoyed it! By the way, I was not totally glued to the tv at the time, so was that Steve playing guitar during "Hands"? It looked like it, but I am not sure.. anyway.. Check local listings for air times. Roseanne is syndicated so its on various networks & times in different areas. However, between impeachment news & and an imminent US attack of Iraq, pre-emption of the show is very possible. Time to watch "Wag the Dog" again...... So, I guess I should (calmly) summarize what I was saying. Minus the swearing. I was trying to say that we should not encourage speaking your mind if, when others do so, we all jump down everyone else's throats. We also should not so highly anticipate a Jewel television appearance, if all we are going to do is snap on the length of Jewel's skirt or her dancing. BTW, nobody flamed me for my last post!
