Is >there a service network or group effort established and supported by >the group that is actively trying to do good and be kind in a >practical manner? Well Erik, since you brought it up, yes we do! :-) A large number of EDAs set out to establish a formal organization early in 1997 (remember DuffStock and LizStock, anyone?). This effort began after Jewel insisted that she wanted her EDAs to help others and not worry so much about how to help her or what to get her for her birthday... After much work, on November 24, 1997, we incorporated THE EVERYDAY ANGELS FOUNDATION as a 501(c)3 non-profit public benefit corporation as defined by the laws of the state of California. * whew, that's a mouthful, huh? * BUT FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY, as the EveryDay Angels Foundation (EDAF) we already have a track record of supporting and promoting charitable and other worthy causes through grass roots volunteer efforts! Our first efforts have focused on the immediate needs (food and clothing, blood donation) and longterm concerns (the environment) that were identified as being most important to the participating EDAs. During our first year, we forged partnerships with Second Harvest, a non-profit food bank network with nationwide affiliates, and The Center for Marine Conservation (CMC), who sponsors beach cleanups and preservation projects. We held volunteer days at food banks in Hillside, NJ and Boston with several dozen EDAs gathering to help others and have (quite) a few laughs as well. During the fall, there were multiple beach cleanups and a dune grass planting project in New Jersey. I think I can safely speak for all involved when I say that we had one hell of a good time at all the events! You know, as JewelStock was being arranged back in the spring of 1996, EDA Steve Ito suggested that anyone stepping forward to champion any list project should state their qualifications and background first. This "Ito Rule" was suggested when Mike Connell jumped feet first into the driver's seat for the planning of the Bearsville concerts. Of course, we all now know that Mike somehow pulled it off with flying colors -- and then got "suckered" into running this list for the past two years! ;-) So here's my disclaimer: Insofar as my personal role with the EDAF, I am one of the original filing founders, and serve on the Board of Directors as President. If you saw the MTV "Jewel TV" segment, you might recall hearing Amy Neufeld ask Jewel the second of three audience questions. Amy, who is also an EDAF founder and Director, mentioned the EDAF in the question, getting us RARE free MTV exposure. I mean, these guys put black tape over the brand names on their studio keyboards! Ever heard of the keyboard made by "YA--HA"? (And to answer a question from a past post, no, that Amy isn't Mr.BB, err, Alan's lovely wife AmyJo...) BTW, the third Director in this EDAF cast of characters is the notorious Tom Proven ('nuff said). Jewel and Lenedra are very much aware of our EDAF group and its goals. From the start, the J-team gave its blessing to use the name "EveryDay Angels" and at our launch in San Diego, Jewel joined another half-dozen artists in performing for us at Java Joe's. Now, we look forward to the launch of Jewel and Lenedra's own non-profit organization (Higher Ground for Humanity) in 1999. Over the next several weeks, the EDAF is opening membership to the public. We will post more information about how to join soon. You don't have to join to participate, but as they say, membership has its privileges! :-) We have had over 50 individual EDAs participate in volunteer events (held mostly in the New York/New Jersey and Massachusetts area since our Thanksgiving visit to a women's shelter and clothing drive in San Diego). We'd like to see that number increase tenfold by next summer. We encourage all EDAs to get involved and start improving our world. In a day or so, we will post some suggestions for holiday activities to help others, which we hope will motivate you to take action, then share your experience with us all. That brings up another interesting "opportunity" (that's "positive-speak" for a problem, BTW): How do we promote the EDAF and the "everyday angel" aspect of the list without unnecessarily burdening those who are here just for the music? Well, Mike Connell and the EDAF Board have agreed that any such posts sent to the Jewel list will be forwarded to the EDAF@smoe.org mail list. This list is available only to EDAF members, but ANYONE can post to it their thoughts, ideas and descriptions of what they are doing. Just e-mail us at EDAF@smoe.org, and we'll forward your posts to the EDAF membership. Also, starting with your e-mails, we will compile a list of helpful things done by the EDAs and post it once a week or so to the Jewel@smoe.org list. That way, we can all see exactly what we are doing, and hopefully inspire other EDAs to do likewise. Then the next time a squabble breaks out because someone feels that EDAs don't "walk the walk" as well as they "talk the talk", we'll have some concrete evidence to the contrary! We WILL have concrete evidence to the contrary, right guys? :-) So, in the meantime, please check into buying a toy or two for your local "Toys for Tots" program, empty ALL that pocket change into the Salvation Army Red Kettle, and consider donating those unused warm winter coats, sweaters and blankets to a group that can distribute them where they can do some good. If you are the "hands on" type, see if your local food bank needs volunteers and help keep neighbors from being hungry during the holidays. As the subject says, today's USA Today has two articles in the "Life" section that mention Jewel.....one involving CD sales (CD sales by all musical artists is the cover story in that section) and another small feature article on page 11 of the Life section. The feature article is a supplement to another article on that page about Christine Lavin, who is touring the country with her "show", which among other things includes her giving away recently published books during the show. The Jewel article is about how Lavin has people play a game involving reading Jewel's poetry from 'a night without armor' and earning points when they are the first to notice a 'key word'. (I know it sounds odd.....the article explains it better) I don't have time to get into the details, just wanted to alert you folks who may want to get the paper. I would also assume that both articles are on the USA Today web page at http://www.usatoday.com Then hit the "Life" section on the web page. Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post the articles on the list tonight when I get home. Mike :-) P.S. The CD sales story mentions Spirit sold 891,000 units as of December 6th, which was 9 days ago, so I'm nearly certain it's passed a million by now. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 12:18:43 -0500 (EST) From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB-CBS This Morning info/AOL Chat tonight Hi all, Gotta make this quick. 3 things: 1)Reminder that tonight Jewel chats again live on AOL LIve. Here is the summary of a short review of Spirit from a german TV guide (so don't take it too serious): no humor, all whining, music that sounds cold and results in no emotions, POY was hippie-like campfire-drama, Spirit is polished designer-tragic, and as a personal add-on: the reviewer writes, that he thinks that Jewel is a selfish goat. (Sorry, might be bad english, but this review was VERY hard to translate as it uses many phrases...) Nevertheless it got no thumb down, Spirit got a horizontal thumb. Spirit droped in the new german CD Charts from 40 to 69 in it's 3rd week, ouch... Thanks to Alan for mentioning the rest of the european tour in his last calendar, I feared Jewel would only visit the UK :-) And I hope the FanCast will be on the Atlantic Page for at least one day, as I have no access to the Internet at the time of the re-broadcast (this will be about 3 a.m. local time....). Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 17:34:39 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel Inspires Poet Game - from the USA Today Here's the one article from Tuesday's USA Today newspaper. The person who has the game as a part of her show, Christine Lavin, is a folksinger/songwriter....... The Jewel article is at http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/books/b903.htm while the full article on Lavin (which does not mention Jewel) is at http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/books/b902.htm Mike :-) ***** Jewel inspires Poet Game In an interview with Andy Smith of the Providence, R.I., Journal-Bulletin, Christine Lavin explained the Lavin Lending Library, which inspired Smith to donate his copy of A Night Without Armor, poetry by the young rock star Jewel. Lavin noticed that the poet is fond of some words more than others. Her favorites appear to be flesh, fruit, tongue and breast. Which inspired Lavin to read some of Jewel's poetry onstage and to play the Poet Game. The rules: Each player takes turns reading a Jewel poem aloud. If the poem contains the words "flesh," "fruit," "tongue" or "breast," the first person to hear any of those words jumps up, screams "Jewel!" stops the reading, scores 5 points, takes possession of the book and does the next reading. If you read an entire poem without being interrupted, you score 5 points. If you laugh while you are reading a poem, you lose 5 points and forfeit your turn. The player who has the most points at the end of the game (or when boredom sets in) wins the book. The winner promises to host another Poet Game party and pass the book on. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #707 ***************************
