I remember that the J-team wanted to wait until the release of the album since some of the tracks might have been on the album, and they didn't want the tape to steal any of the thunder from the new album. But now that the new album is out, and most of those recordings didn't even make it on the album....I was just wondering. I would totally understand if those songs would never make it out into open light, for I am thankful enough for what was released (especially since I'm pretty much as far as you could get from the east coast and couldn't make it.) And I would like to throw my two cents into the latest "discussion." I'm actually thankful that Jewel get's a little upset sometimes. Especially with that radio interview. Because that's what makes her real. You know? She's not fake, she doesn't sell herself necessarily like some artists do. You know, those people that are totally fake and have almost become a commodity over the years. That's why I like Pearl Jam as well. They have integrity, they've shy'ed away from publicity and such, because they want to keep some part of them that are human, rather than selling their personal lives and music by going on every talkshow and talking about their personal life like they were a brand new car or something. Plus they go out of their way for their fans, like Jewel seems to. But it's just like something that that old show My So Called Life said, "She's real, she has flaws like we all do." And most importantly, she's honest. Something I feel is desperately needed in the world today. That and love. Jewel is an inspiration to me, and helped with her poetry, music, and most importantly her interview with Oprah, when I was going through the breakup with my ex-girlfriend/soulmate. We all go through hard times, like Jewel is going through now, so let's please try to be respectful. Because afterall, "she's pieces of you." peace and love all, Jason - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Sometimes is seen a strange spot Jason Kolashinski in the sky, of a human being, University of Washington that was given to fly" School of Dentistry Pearl Jam jasonk@u.washington.edu "All you need is a heart to call home" Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Dec 1998 13:09:01 -0500 From: Rachel Subject: TAKE NO OFFENSE EDA's, I am writing a letter I wrote to Karen because ever since her posts some EDA's have written screaming in my ear (just SOME) over what I wrote in a post in which I apologized for and shouldn't even had to because it was merely an opinion. I am TRYING to act mature over this but the whole thing just makes me upset. Here is a quote from her post in which it talks about me and how I was wrong to say something: >Plus, who on this whole entire list has the >right to say >that she is (I quote) " Does anyone think that Jewel has gotten her ego >just a TINY bit >ahead of herself?" (from musserr@hartwick.edu) Here is the letter. I hope all of you do not get mad at me: Karen, What more can I do? I apologized for writing that post where I asked if Jewel has a tiny bit of an ego, and ever since your post quoting me some EDA's have written to me screaming in my ear about how I shouldn't have said that. Well, I apologized once for posting that post, but I refuse to apologize AGAIN! Courtney wrote to me (an EDA) and said I shouldn't have even had to apologized the first time because nobody should get screamed at for simply voicing my opinion, and I agree. It was a mistake for even APOLOGIZING for voicing my opinion. For somebody to say that I have no right to say what I did in that post, I get a little perturbered over, because I am NOT wrong--it was an opinion. I will say WHAT I want to whomever I want whenever I want! Take no offense, Rachel - ------------------------ There it was. Flame me all you want. if this is the way I go, fine! You're really lucky!!! On the other hand, I guess it's good that I live in country where Jewel is virtually unknown (although I think she's kinda getting more and more publicity at the moment) and I have no access to any of this stuff because that would mean I'd spend all my money on Jewel. Anyhow, I was still wondering whether there's someone out there who is a fierce Jewel collector and has all/most of her TV appearances edited on a tape (or two)? Please let me know. I was fortunate enough to see Jay Leno recently when Jewel performed Hands because they broadcast European NBC here and it was the first time I ever saw Jewel on TV. That was fantastic! She's a great performer, but I think I used to like her more when she dressed down a little. (I downloaded a bunch of video clips, so I kinda saw how she dressed before). But I don't wanna be bashing her now, so it's not meant like that. It's just my taste in clothes... Anyhow, I hope someone will email me and make me a generous offer. Take care y'all! The few of us who do can still make a difference. I think most people are saying the don;t for one reason and that might be b/c her last album was a little childish. But what everyone needs to relize she did that album when she was 17 and now she in her mid 20's. She has changed and everyone don't have to like her music. all she wants to do bring people together. To make this world more loveing and for people to find themselves. And the few people who do listen and believe can show others and so on and so on. She is a wonderful musician and very interesting. But everyone has there own views. It is our responiblity to follow through and we can't do that by fighting thats not what she wants and the reason we all are EDA's. Anyway thats what I believe. I think we should pull together and make a difference. Dear Angels, Okay class, what have we learned this week? 1. Jewel is.....gasp!...HUMAN. She will have bad days just like the rest of us. 2. If one person (Rachel) expresses an opinion, and someone else doesn't like it, then we are going to act like immature 3rd graders and practically have an anyuerism if we don't all think with the same damn brain. (BTW, Rachel, it seems like you are one of the few angels that know what you are talking about. Rock on with your bad self). 3. NO ONE should have to appologize for having an opinion, or being human. Everyone else does that too. All together now: NOBODY'S PERFECT. not you, not me, not the little red headed boy down the road, not Jewel. Jesus, since I've been on the list, people got in fights because of sexuality, individual opinions, meanings of songs..... My god, yall wanna get in a fight about Jewel's hair color too? Why lets! That's just about as important as someone else's sexuality, so lets just have another retarded immature fight, shall we? Dammit, yall grow up! Love and lollipops Courtney the hyper angel P.S. I agree with Harrisbros on this one! We are everyday angels because we are careful with our centers and careful with other people; mindful of their center souls. It is inner beauty and outer deed that we strive for. To be sensitive and empathetic in a postive way--remember where the term everyday angels come from. We all live parallel lives to a degree--I'm a utopian anarchist at heart and in deed and in mind and spirit, but in this society, you have to play the game--the real triumph is remaining who you are in spite of it all.We live multiple lives and I'm sure Jewel does too. Knowing that she loves Pablo Neruda (my fav poet)and Nabokov shows something of existentialist awareness. She is aware of existence and of essence. We've all created and supported social standards. Its difficult to reject these standards--in some ways Jewel does and in some wzays she doesn't. One can only reject them to a certain point if they want to survive. . harrisbros is right--jewel's hair, clothes, attitude on some day should not matter. Its her message that matters. I'll be careful with you and you be careful with me. Though our hopeful revolutionary rebellion may be small, it is significant. We must concern ourselves with changing things and not expect Jewel to do it alone. She puts it out there; but we must take it, run with it, and put it into effect. Hey gang, I just have to say that I read the Rolling Stone article on Jewel today, and I didn't see anything negative about Jewel at all. I also want to say, that I didn't even have any of her music until last week. What got me interested in Jewel was the book ANWA. The context of her poetry was so insightful and honest, that it drew me into liking Jewel. For Jewel the person. So, if any of you think she has failed you or disapponted you in any way, take the time to think about it what it really is that is bugging you. I wonder how many of you that commented actually heard the interview, all I saw were a few lines and those could have been taken out of context, I've seen Jewel jokingly put reporters in there place dozens of times. Then of course we have people who jump on the bashing band wagon and start talking about how Mr.BB, Mike and Jewels managment are standing on a grassy knoll some where plotting to corrupt us into buying more records. for the first time in 2 years I acttually thought about sending my unsubscribe command to major domo and getting off this list.
