There are so many reasons. First, it's her style. Folk, Folk-Pop, Folk-Hippie, whatever, it's not the kind of music Europeans -in general- like. Germans for instance, they would laugh at you when you tell them something about folk, simply because this expression is quite similar to the German word "Volk", "Volksmusik", i.e. "Oktoberfest"-music. Clear? Then: nobody, except English-speaking people can hardly understand the lyrics, which are in my point of view th main reason why we like Jewel. Reason XYZ: Almost 0,0 media appearances. When I went to USA two years ago I met Jewel Kilcher personally, she was performing an "show" next to my Town, so by curiosity I went there. After seeing the show I tried to get next her to ask by her autograph, witch now I keep in a safe place now with her number. :o) After that show, she performed again in other town, and I went too. And I got next to her again, and she remember my face, was I dreaming! No! She asked me if I would like to "join" her next shows... immediately I call my room friend, and said to him that I would be outside for a time. And went with Jewel and her "crew". Resume: I spent two weeks with Jewel, and It was the most amazing trip that I've never done! And now I can tell you all , sincerely, why Jewel is like that: She's very funny and friendly, but as Scott said, she don't like her past, not because she has shame of it, but now her life changed, doesn't like to remember that hard times with no "future" as she said to me. But now everybody can see her... listen to her... why remember her hard times? Let she be free to enjoin her personals goals! Let she enjoin her "new" life! Let she sing freely! PLUS, if someone asked *me* about 50 times/year how it was brushing my teeth every morning, for example, I think after a few years of that, I'd get a little annoyed too about answering the same old questions...I think she's ready to move on, past her van days...all that info is available in numerous places anyway...so an interviewer should know these things ahead of time, and her listeners ought to know that by now as well, if they're even remotely a fan, in the smallest of ways. So I can't blame her, you ask a dumb question, you'll get a dumb (or sarcastic) answer. That's Jewel, but I'm sure many celebrities may have felt the same way about it, maybe just not expressed it so bluntly, but that's what makes Jewel herself. Can't knock that. Sometimes interviewers can come across as being rather simple-minded...maybe she was just getting that point across. Looks like it's time that show hire a new research team. With the recent posting of attitude, and who jewel really is, I saw a need to add $.02 in to the discussion here. Now this is going to be from my point of view and in no way is it required reading(had to stick that in there). With the seeing of Jewel as a god/above reproach type of person, I have one thing to say. Dont make an opinion of someone until you have met them face to face. Me personally, I like Jewel's music, and the way she says her platitudes. I cant make an opinion of her unless I can actually see her face to face. Each person is different and can not relate well to some. That is what makes us humans. Now I enjoy reading all the varying opinions, and I try to take everything with a grain of salt. Opinions are a wonderful thing, they tell a little bit about ourself. I do miss the wonderful stories of old from such feared contenders as Dennis(the menace)Harris, Igor, Crunch, Mandy and others who have since faded away. But a new crop has come in who bring meaningful and advers posts to the lists. Jesse, TigerMoon, and others have brought there own flavor to the list adding thier own point of view. It has been and will continue to be enjoyable. And even though I cannot add any personal experiences of seeing Jewel Live(except for a live performance on TV, hehe), I am content with hearing her thru the "Angelfood" offered and thru her albums.(Living in the Southeast leads one to almost be cutoff from the mainstream music scene) Its to bad that I havent met any of yall(even though that would be interesting in itself), I am content with just having this medium to connect to the great and wonderful group that this list is and will continue to be. I think that what Crunch said, or was it kookybaka, the fact that we started as fans of Jewel and and ended up becoming fans of each other, holds true for us all.
