"One of the stranger moments of the evening came when Jewel took the stage to sing a few tunes and asked if anybody had a nail clipper. 'My nails are too long,' the soft spoken singer breathed into the microphone, explaining that long nails made strumming her guitar difficult." "As actor Peter Gallagher shouted out that he had a pair of tiny shears on hand, an anonymous Good Samaritan rushed onstage with a pair. The relieved blond songstress mumbled, 'You'd thing with all the millions of records I've sold that I could afford a fingernail clipper.'" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 06:49:56 -0800 (PST) From: Kevin Adams Subject: Converted to Jewel No not me :) But I've just converted my family to Jewel. I couldn't believe it, years back when I listened to "POY" I was Ridiculed by my family members who didn't like Jewel. I've been playing "Spirit" non-stop since I bought it and now my sister is continuously "borrowing" my CD. And my brother just purchased his own copy. And it doesn't end there, they're asking me if they can listen to "POY". I don't think they'll get into the music and lyrics as deep as I have, but it's a start right? Jewel's reaching out to everyone's hearts one-by-one. I'm just so happy :) Kev, "Hold onto the World" -- Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 13:32:32 CEST From: "Remko 'Mac Gyver' van der Vossen" Subject: transcription of a Jewel interview of only one day ago. Hi all, for eveybody who is interrested, A transcription of an interview with Jewel conducted by Bridget for the Dutch Television station TMF 12/03/98. Warning, Warning, Warning,Warning, Warning, Warning,Warning, Warning: This is a transcription, NOT the exact same words Jewel said, I've tried to keep it as close as possible, but I had to do this fast. Bridget: How did you manage to make Spirit different from POY but still sound like Jewel? Jewel: With POY there was room for growth and it was still very simpel, It's been almost 4 years since POY, and I've grown in that time, that's why Spirit is different. Bridget: Why did you choose Patrick Leonard for the producer of Spirit? Jewel: I had a choice of 15 producers for Spirit, but none of them were right, I didn't connect with any of them, Patrick goes for the songs and doesn't overproduce an album. Bridget: you did Hands with Patrick, Why did you release this song first? Jewel: It fitted the bill, you know with the christmas season and all. Bridget: What is your favorite song from Spirit?, On POY it was Amen, which you wrote after Kurt Cobain died. Jewel: I don't really have a favorite, but I do think that there is a song very precious to me. A friend of mine died of cancer and I wrote Life Uncommon for her. Bridget: That's very special, very personal... Isn't it difficult to sing such emotions? Jewel: Yes, it's very hard. In the studio when I had to record it I kept crying over and over again. //A clip Karma Police of Radiohead was shown which is one of Jewel's favorites. Bridget: What about Radiohead do you like most, the song or the video? Jewel: Both, I really like Radiohead. Bridget: Spirit is a very pure album, are you affraid that technology will overshadow your music? Jewel: I'm very honest wbout where I am musically. On POY I just started playing the guitar. I don't want people thinking I am better than I am. I got better and you can hear that on Spirit. If i learn for instance the drums I would start to play on my songs. Bridget: Are learning to play some instrument now? Jewel: I have no time for it, I'd love to learn how to play piano. Bridget: That's a shame, cause you learn very fast, would you try it next time, maybe you would feel better if it were all your own. Jewel: It wouldn't matter but I think I would write differently. Bridget: Would you ever produce your next record? Jewel: Producing is very technical, it really ain't that much fun. Musically I get in it anyway. So I don't find it a bad thing that that's done by someone else, maybe sometime in the future. Bridget: How did you get in contact with someone like Flee? Jewel: I met him when I was still living in my car, he was working at an health institute, I was scamming for food there and we just sort f hit it of. I played him some music and he said that I should make a record of it. I said, I'm not very good. A year later I called him and told him I got a record deal. And another year later I called to tell him my CD was going really well. He's always been asking me if he could play on one of my records, and I was just like, Are you serious? He is a talented musician, his solo work is really beautiful. Bridget: But he just played on one song: Barcelona, why just one? Jewel: They're doing the their new album right now so he was to busy to do more. Bridget: Do you like what the Red Hot Chillipeppers do? Jewel: Oh yeah, I love 'm, I find Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik great. //A second clip was shown, Give It Away by the Red Hot Chillipeppers which is also one of jewels favorites. Bridget: I don't wanna talk about your past, cause we already know that, but I saw this interview where you talked about your parents raising you. And I was just so touched when your mother, who was also ther, told that she sees their children as own individuals, and that you have to get to know them over the years. Do you admire her philosophy? Jewel: I was always aware that my mother never expected anything from me. She always asked me for my opinion. As a small child I didn't knew what to do with that. So I had to think about myself. She's always ajusted to who I thought I was at the time, that was nice. Bridget: Is it your biggest inspiration source? Jewel: No, but I'm most gratefull to my mom because she's helped me always been my fullest potential and helped me overcome things that could have made me loo more limited. Bridget: I never thought of raising your children that way, do you wan't children of your own? Jewel: I'm not thinking about that a lot, maybe later, when my clock starts ticking. Bridget: Maybe you can see your album as sort of a child? Jewel: I'm very focused on what I do, I Love what I do. I'm married to it and work really hard on it. Bridget: You're real busy writing songs, singing, writing poetry. I believe your book hasn't come out in Holland yet, why not? Jewel: Well I believe it hasn't come out in Europe at all, but if I put it on all the television shows they have to so... Bridget: It's a shame, you hear so much about it and you can't read it. But you're so busy, now you're acting, how does the acting develop actually, because you've just finished your movie? Jewel: Yeah I have the female lead in Ang Lee's new film. I'va always wanted to act but could not find the time. So when I finished my tour and had time and Ang Lee had just finished a great script... You know , it was just perfect timing. It couldn't have been a greater experience, everyone took good care of me. Bridget: Is acting something you want to do in the future as well? Jewel: U-hu. Bridget: It's something extra, it's so much, isn't it to much, cause you live on this planet not so many years. You do so much, do you still have goals for the future? Jewel: I always wanna get better at things, I love learning, I love challanges, I love to be on the edge of failure. You can do lots of things, and your never done learning. Bridget: So you're gonna continue everything? Jewel Yeah, to be human you're gonna need all your limbs, The creative body is the same thing. Singing and writing, is one arm, but I have such many more potential, I wanna fully Utilize myself. But it's not harder to skip or to run, they're not that different. Such is acting, singing and writing, it's not that different. Bridget: No it's in the same artistic... Jewel: I want to fully utilize myself. Bridget: Your next favorite song is Eagle-Eye Cherry, I was surprised you actually picked him. Tell me first why. Jewel: I was having lunch with Elton John and he said, have you heard this new guy, he's relly great. That day I was driving my car and heard the song and it sounded like Ben Harper but a little bit more produced. Later I saw the video too and it sounded just really great. I like it. Bridget: Do you like his sister's music too? Jewel: Oh yeah, I remember the song too but I wasn't that much into music then, Buffalo Stance and all those were real good songs. I saw Eagle-Eye Cherry on the airport and I was like, I wonder if he knows me, I wonder if I could say hello to him. Bridget: And did you? Jewel: Yeah, he said hello to me. //The Third clip was Save tonight of Eagle-Eye Cherry, also one of Jewel's Favorites. Bridget: Your CD has also been released here in Holland, Spirit is your second album, with the first you didn't really do shows in Holland, do you know what you are going to do next year? Jewel: I'm going on tour, and I will be in Holland in April or Mei I think. Festivals are hard for me, cause I play acoustic guitar, but I played in small clubs, that was good for me. Bridget: Were reactions in Holland different as elsewhere? Jewel: The people were very enthousiastic yeah. Bridget: I wish you all the luck with your new album. What's your movie called? Jewel: I think it's Ride With The Devil. Bridget: Aren't you sure? Jewel: They change the name quite often. Bridget: And what about the poetry? Is there going to be a second book? Jewel: In Juli, I still have to write it, It's a book of short stories of how I grew up. Bridget: Thanks for being here. Jewel: No Thanks. Well that was it, I hope you enjoyed it. I myself found it a little dissapointing, They made it look like it was going to be an hour of interviews and clips of Jewel, But as it turned out, it only lasted for about half an hour, and there were only bit's of Jewel clips shown. And for the info, well some was interseting, but some wasn't at least it wasn't a 'standard' interview so we got to hear something differently.
