I hear country music all the time. Yes, some of it is >very well-written but it never strays from the topic of relationsihps or love. >That is limited in my mind. Jewel sings songs about humanity and society, but >a country album would be just about love. And I'm sorry Mark, but I maintain that your definition, and perception, of country music is quite limited... there *are* country songs that don't deal with relationships and love. As an example, (again off the top of my head) - "That's Why I'm Here" by Kenny Chesney, a song about a man coming to terms with alcoholism... "Independence Day" by Martina McBride... about a woman breaking free from an abusive relationship... "He Walked On Water" by Randy Travis... an ode to his grandfather... "Leaving October" by Sons of the Desert... a song about a man dealing with the death of his wife. Possibly one of the most well-written songs I've ever heard, period... "Life's A Dance" by John Michael Montgomery... a simple message, but well written... "William," "Framed," "House and 90 Acres," "Love and a .45," "The River's Own," all by Chris Knight - all well written, none of which deal with "I love you, you love me" themes... "Walk On The Rocks" by Alan Jackson... a song which is about an older man, in prison, giving advice to his son... "Wide Open Spaces" by the Dixie Chicks... a song about a girl leaving home & striking out on her own... "Ships That Don't Come In" by Joe Diffie... another simple message, but very well written... anything by Gillian Welch... different music, but VERY well written, and her voice is very striking... As I said before, there's plenty of music that falls within the genre of "country" that is well written. Much of that music ALSO addresses issues that aren't simply "love & relationships." Just as with most genres of music, there's a good deal of it that's derivative, unimaginative, and bland. But, just as with most genres of music, there's also a fair amount that's beautiful, well-written, or just plain good. And really, even some of the love & relationships songs, cheesy & corny as they may be, are a lot of fun. As far as whether or not Jewel doing a country album would require it to be an album "strictly" about love & relationships... I can't help but wonder what percentage of Jewel's songs ARE about "love and/or relationships" in some way. Roughly, I'd guess that more than half of the songs I've heard deal in SOME way with love or relationships. If that's the sole defining characteristic of country music in your book, Jewel's already halfway to being a country artist. :) Kevin (Who wouldn't mind hearing Jewel play some songs with a steel guitar in them. What a hoedown that would be. :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 00:15:59 EST From: Stevie3103@aol.com Subject: Re: What hands means to you? + movement class The first time I heard hands, I was like just "wow." I just felt that it is such a truthful song. When I worry too much, I keep telling myself that Jewel told me "that we're all okay, and not to worry because worry is wasteful and useless in times like these." And it just means that one person may not be able to change the world, but if we worked together, something might happen. I go to the LA County High School for the Arts and in my theatre momvement class, we are doing a movement activity with YWMFM. We are interpreting the song in our own movement ways and collaborating what we've learned in movement class and relating it to the movement in the song. This list is SO drasticly different from other lists I've seen. It's great to see real discussions in a discussion group. I'm so pleased I found you all. Next, I just wanted to respond to Kevin's thoughts on country music and its artists. My style of preference as far as music is concerned leans toward what is currently called "alternative" altho it was called "progressive" when I first got into it as a DJ years back. I have noticed one major difference between this style and country. Progressive artists almost always write and perform their own music. Country music seems to have a majority of its music written by people who just write the songs, and sung by people who just sing the songs. Of course their are easily identifiable exceptions on both sides. Now, having made this observation I dont mean to imply that its a bad thing to sing someone elses songs, or to have your songs sung by someone else. Where I'm trying to go with this is simple. I beleive I hear more sincerity, more passion, and more genuine emotion in a song sung by the writer than those sung by another. This of course is all just my opinion. So what's this have to do with Jewel possibly doing an album in a country style? Well I'm glad you asked. I think that any album composed in majority by Jewel, and performed by Jewel, will be an album I will be able to connect with. An album composed by others and performed by Jewel will be an album I will enjoy, but probably not connect with as well. SOOOO, write what you want, sing what you will, and if the words be your own I will listen. thanks for lettin' me ramble. Spirit is more focused and concentrated on a specific theme... which makes it narrower. As for being deeper... well, I haven't heard it all, but Hands is NOT deeper. I know that's a high handed statement to make, but... come on, now. | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 07:53:48 -0400 (AST) From: Jesse A McDonald Subject: Jewel on the idiot box I haven't checked my email since Thursday so I'm sure the recent TV has been talked to death... which is why I'm not going to read the other posts before posting my own perspective... most likely I'll tire of the subject before I even say anything if I do that, and I know how heartily disappointed you'll all be if that happens... ^_^ So it was 11:30 AST when reading this very list reminded me that Jewel was going to be on Letterman that very night... I logged off, frantically searched for my local listings... then I realized my paper'd been cut off, and I don't GET TV listings anymore. So I called up my girlfriend... who was asleep... but who is an even more devoted Jewel fan than I.... and got her to check for me. So even though I had to work at nine on Friday morning, I stayed up and watched that whole show simply to catch hands and a moment of cute repartee. Two am. I can't live like that anymore... but I digress. Man, television is in a sorry state. People have no standards for comedy these days. It's such a jolt to see what people think is funny... I swear modern comedy clubs would all fold if not for this culture's mad passion for consuming alcohol. *ahem* That aside, I was disappointed with her performance. It was a perk to see Poltzie there (could the man look any moresensitive? crazy sad eyebrows!^_^), but the whole thing just seemed straight up insincere, especially on her part. The band was like clockwork, there was no groove... and I just wasn't feeling it. Yeah. But she DID toast Letterman... sure it probably was innocent, but he seemed to actually get offended... and after inviting us all to laugh at his own mother, he deserved it. "Oh Jewel, you sweet talker..." So then on Friday morning it was a crazy scramble to find out what and where the hell NBC's Today show was... I'd never heard of it... It turned out to start at 8am here, which meant that for the second hour of it I was at work. So I turned it on, kept my tape ready, waited, and then fell back on the timer when she failed to materialize before I had to go. When I saw the tape... well THAT was better. Loads of people, yes, but they were respectful... massive bass drum sound, nice feeling... this performance was nicer. It had atmosphere... well I mean it was kind of like the Beatles performing on the roof of Abbey Road studio, you know? It was cute when Jewel briefly dipped out of tune on the second "in the end". ^_^ And then... YWMFM. Oh MAN that was NICE. It's *SO* MOVING! That's unquestionably the best rendition of that song I've ever heard... Poltzie did a dope version when he was here, at an HMV instore performance, but this was better. Mainly, I think, it was the young girls all singing along. It was so... augh, I can't say anything more. Oh well, you all saw it, you know. ^_^ Rudolph was cute, but Jewel's mic was too loud for the first half... her harmony was totally drowning out Lenedra's melody. But that's the sound guy's fault. ^_^ Oh and if we need fashion commentary, I didn't feel she was wearing anything particularly notable, although I didn't much like the makeup on Letterman. I liked Steve's jacket on Today. Life's a great biig fashion showwww... | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 09:02:41 EST From: LuvbugKAT@aol.com Subject: Jewel on CBS This Morning I was flipping through channels while eating breakfast and came upon that CBS Show, I'm not sure what the name of it is...This Morning I think??? Anyways, an interview of Jewel came up, anyone else catch that? I only saw a few parts of it in which they showed her in what looks to me like a nursing home and she was singing. They showed her yodeling and there was a small interview about her new album. She felt she really connected with the audience & a wonderful time was had by all. :-) Also yesterday morning, Jewel performed Rudolph in addition to "Whats Simple Is True" on Regis & Kathy Lee in NYC, but this was not broadcast. It will be broadcast on R & KL during the week of 12/21 (sometime during that Christmas week). To all those writing me about rumors, I'm not going to answer any of that stuff right now. It seems like perfect topics to address on the "Rumor & Truth" page on the redesigned website, which I will do soon, once we get far more important things together. I know what everyone really wants to know & thats some International tour dates. These dates are still in the process of being confirmed, but against my better judgement, I'll let you all know many of the dates planned. There will be others & there will be changes, of course. Here's various stuff pertaining to 1999 Touring below. All the UK dates are confirmed & many of the Australia/New Zealand dates are confirmed, but none of the Far East dates are. That part of the schedule will likely change quite a bit & we'll have all correct confirmed info on the website, soon. I'm sending this info along because I'm flooded with requests for ANY info. PLEASE do not ask me for ticket or any other info right now regarding any of these dates. If you live in these countries, simply research this yourself or wait for us to post the 1999 calendar on the website. There's plenty of time & we will keep you informed there, I promise! :-) I'm also including various other info here of interest, including January's one-off NYC "multiple female artists gig", movie release info, etc. SAVE This email & then update it by checking the website over the course of the next several weeks. (I haven't the time to answer private questions regarding any of these shows. Please understand that its nothing personal when I do not reply to questions about this.) I hope you all are enjoying this "Jewel Video Writing" project. We have a lot of cool other plans for the EDAs in 1999 so stick around!
