I was watching top 25 of the decade and yes, as you probably know Jewel's You Were Meant For Me was 25. You know how they were trying to find that weird guy Jessie and he was "hiding" in videos? Well, he was in Jewel's video. You know when Jewel is just lying on the floor in that video? Well, Jesse is practically lying on top of her there! LOL Also, in top 25 they showed "Disguises" of Jessie and where he might have been. They showed a picture of his face and then a blonde wig on and one of the people that works at MTV said that Jessie was disguised as Jewel! It did NOT look like Jewel....he looked ridicoulous!!! LOL On MTV's news 1515 they were talking about how all of these new CD's were coming out such as Jewel's, Mariah Carey's, etc. Jewel's "Spirit" was NUMBER 3!!! YES!!!!!! In front of her was Method Man and Garth Brooks new albums. Jewel was in front of Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston (who's album was surprisingly ranked #13!!), etc. They showed a little clip with Jennifer Love Hewitt and she said something like : "I am really looking forward to buying Whitney Houston and Jewel's new album". They talked about how it took a long time for POY to become a big selling album, and how Jewel was doing three things: music, poetry, and acting. You know, like how everyone says that! Just thought I would inform everyone! :) From, Rachel The Angel Standing By :) ------------------------------ Date: 29 Nov 98 16:04:15 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: Spirit: Q Review This review of Spirit is in the current issue (Jan 99) of the UK music magazine Q. It is accompanied by a very nice West Kennerly photo of Jewel. - ----------------------------------------------------------- Diamond Girl Good news! In America, it's still possible to sell bucket loads of records without being commercial. Jewel Spirit ATLANTIC 7567-82950-2 Standout Tracks: Kiss The Flame, Jupiter, Do You. SOMEWHERE AROUND the middle of 1997, long years of beyond-the-call-of-duty touring finally paid off for wholesome, crooked-toothed Swiss-American folkie Jewel Kilcher. Her low key, long-before-released debut album Pieces Of You had turned her - almost imperceptibly - into a major star in her homeland. Between then and the release of this inevitably high-profile follow-up, the young Alaskan has found the time and inspiration to publish a best-selling book of poetry. A Night Without Armor, and, by all accounts, penned enough new songs for three or four more records. She has also enlisted the keyboard-playing and knob-twiddling skills of veteran pop producer and long-time Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard to help turn a sound that was born to play coffee shop gigs into something capable of withstanding the inevitable round of stadium concerts. The good news for the legions of word-of-mouth fans who bought album one is that Leonard has made no attempt to turn his New Age folk babe into a poptastic material girl. Spirit is still very recognisably a Jewel record as her clear, tender and playfully acrobatic vocal remains firmly to the fore over a series of obliquely melodic, deftly woven and densely wordy tunes. The small band of session musicians enlisted to flesh out Jewel's strongly acoustic style remain, for the most part, modestly in the background and only occasionally does an over-fancy piece of fretwork or some OTT bass and percussion disturb the quietly established equilibrium. The songs themselves also cover familar Jewel territory, concerning themselves by and large with strongly personal but thoroughly American explorations of love, loneliness and the need for us all to help each other out more. The repeated images of love as a bolt of lightning, of empty rooms and her strange obsession with her own hands, which surface amid the sometimes poetic pschyobabble could become a little tedious for listeners whose appreciation doesn't come shrinkwrapped, but songs such as the flirty, funny Jupiter and the dark but spunky Do You can't help but be easily likeable. Thus far, it seems, success hasn't compromised Jewel: her kooky-cool sound can still charm the pants off you one moment and make you feel like chundering on its sickly-sweet sincerity the next. I've read a couple people asking for guitar tabs. I just ran into this site. It has 7 songs from Spirit, and I believe all the songs from POY, plus a lot of others. I don't know how to play the guitar so it didn't look like it made sense, but I think it should work. You see I had the Matchbox 20 CD. I didn't like. So I listened to it more. I slowly built up a hate towards the group. Before I knew it, I was at CD Warehouse getting $5 for my brand new CD. Bascially, I was trying to say that if ya dont like it, give yourself time. dont overload from it. who knows, if you listen to a CD you hate 24/7, you might find yourself walkin over to CD warehouse, just like me, hand in hand with Spirt and getting $5 for it. *~Carolyn~* *~Airhead Angel~* == "You jump I jump, right?" http://welcome.to/mytitanic ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 15:02:50 PST From: "Erin Benoit" Subject: Fat Boy In response to what Tigermoon said about Fat Boy belonging on POY...I'd have to disagree...well, at first I thought so too but then I thought I'd give it another chance and listened to it again and again. The whole meaning of the song is in the last line. "Sometimes I feel that way too." I think if it had kept the title Fragile Flame it might have a different reaction from some people. I think her stereo-typical songs (Little Sister, Pieces of You, and Fat Boy...possibly Do You) are the most real songs about society. You have to look past the literal words and feel the meaning of each song...it makes you work a little harder than the other songs and yeah, I was afraid of that work at first, but now it is totally worth it just to understand the meaning behind the words. Does anyone understand what I just said? (I don't kow if I do) :) Anyone else feel the same? *********************************************************** "And she wrinkled her nose when she said it; that's how you know she meant it, Jessica." ~Jewel Angel of the Zodiac ************************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 16:31:11 -0700 From: "Elizabeth Yoo" <999weirdo911@gurlmail.com> Subject: You go, Carolyn! Hey guys, this is Liz. I know it was a few days ago, but, you know? I sorta agree with Carolyn. (Sorta 'cuz crazily enough I don't have Spirit) I think that one shouldn't complain about Spirit being a second POY, 'cuz they are two different things. It was a long time interval before Juel released Spirit and she grew more mature during that time. Also, Juel did everything she could to please people. What is Jewel saying about lightning, and rooms in her heart? In "Absence of Fear" she says "And in my heart / there's an empty room / it's waiting for lightening / it's waiting for you.../" then in "Enter From the East" She said '.... my heart is full of empty rooms / three wait for lightening / one waits for you.../" I was just wondering. I think it sounds wonderful, I love it. Just something I noticed... I'm the only one who shares my opinion of never listen to a CD if ya hate it. i was talking from personal experiences. but somebody with the email address of FreakBus (I'm sorry, but what's that about? sorry, i guess my 13-yr-old attitude is shining through) said something along the lines of "if you like a CD instantaneously, then your (its?) shallow" and i also noticed a lotta people said they hated POY when they first heard it. *~but i loved, i mean really loved, POY. does that make me shallow? or Jewel shallow? well, i certainly hope not. i never thought of myself as shallow. now, i expected a bad reaction when i posted. i always do (some of you might remember me as the crooked tooth girl). and that brings me to another thing about this list. *~ill probably be flamed more, but i hafta get this off my chest. when i first joined the list, when i was 12, i asked two questions. first one was what was the story behind the EDAs. y'all seemed really nice! second question was is the rumor true that Jewel has crooked teeth. i mean, i never noticed that she did, but magazines metionsed it before.well, before i posted, i didn't know what "flamed" meant. after that, i saw the beyond mean side of this list. i actually had to get off the list, you guys made me so upset. i never thought i would cry over email. i did. *~so i was sorta afraid to post my "boy do i have a lot to say" but one email of you guys constantly bitching and complaining pressed the wrong button. and i posted. i got one positive email. one. the rest of ya started complaining again. I think we have changed. When I first joined, when I posted, people were really nice in their replies. Even if they disagreed with something I've said. And as time went by, when someone disagreed, they (no names, but you know who you are) wrote back with stuff like "Well, you don't know what you're talking about..." blah blah blah, bitch bitch bitch. That's not fair. If we constitute expressing our opinions, weshould not flame. We can simply say "Well, I disagree because X, Y and Zed..." but we do not have to bitch just because we don't all think with the same head. The point system was as follows : 5pts for each 1st place vote, 4 for 2nd, etc. So without further ado, here's what you've all been waiting for ... the (not so surprising) results: Question : Who are the currently the top 5 young (under 35) female musicians? #5 (27 pts) Ani DiFranco (yea, my fav. made the list!) #4 (47 pts) Tori Amos (even though she just turned 35 ...) #3 (48 pts) Alanis Morissette (yea, a Canadian) #2 (81 pts) Sarah McLachlan (yea, another Canadian) #1 (105 pts) Jewel!!! Hey fellow EDAs: I was just thinking the other day, what a awesome song "hands" is. I mean it has such a awesome message. I figured I would try and start a topic for discussion. I was wondering what this song means to you? Does it have a special meaning or can you relate to it in some way? For me it really gives me a message of encurgment, when I'm feeling blue or down. I guess I'm the type that will tend to worry about things sometimes. I love the part in the first verse where it says "....And not to worry cause worry is wasteful and useless..... " That's so true. If you stop and think about it, a lot of our worries are useless, and they don't come true. Anyways, I think Jewel is such a awesome song writer and it's amazing how she can express her self in words. I know she's an inspiration to many people. Guess that's it. Hopefully this all don't sound to corny. Hehe! Talk to you later, Mike Santos Strait Angel - -- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #667 ***************************
