I'm new to the list. I've wanted to join for years but I didn't know it was this easy! Anyway, I've had the wonderful oppurtunity to see Jewel twice. I saw her in February of '97 with The Rugburns, and September of '97. During the February show she sang her songs from POY. But during the September show she sang a lot of songs from Spirit. I'm a little surprised at the response that Spirit is getting, simply because the songs are different. The first time I listened to Spirit I instantly recognized most of the songs. Has anyone else recognized any songs that they have seen her sing live? My only wish is that Satellite was put on this album. This and Emily are my favorites and I can't find them anywhere! Just a little bit of my input. Thanks for reading! :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Nov 1998 16:29:06 -0800 (PST) From: Airhead Angel Subject: boy do I have a lot to say well well well. listen to everyone complain. "I wanted a POY II" "Sprit is too poppy" "Sprit will have to grow on me" These are a few of the repeated quotes i have read since 11/17. well, heres what i got to say bout that. *~"I wanted a POY II" Well, we all dont get what we what. Maybe Jewel didn't want another POY. Maybe she wanted to change. And change is good! Who knows? Maybe Jewel will do Techno next. POY was great, but it was time to move on. That's why theres angelfood! *~"Sprit is too poppy" actually, i totally disagree with this. as i am 13, and have probably have more of an opinion of what is "pop" than a 35 yr. old. i was comparing the two cds, and was thinking about that quote. and i relized that they were wrong! if i saw the two album covers in a music store, and i didnt know who Jewel was, i would pick POY. Spirt does not look poppy. it reminds me of whitney houston or celine dion. and they are not poppy. *~"Spirt Will Have To Grow On Me" never, ever, make a cd grow on you. if ya dont like it, ya dont like it! if you constantly listen to a cd you dont like, youll hate it more! you dont have to like Spirt to be a Jewel fan. Like i said before, thats why there's angelfood! Well, that's all for now *~Carolyn~* *~Airhead Angel~* == "You jump I jump, right?" http://welcome.to/mytitanic ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Nov 1998 18:34:50 -0600 From: sesykes@juno.com (§cott S.) Subject: unspirited spirit?¿? Hello Angels, I'd like to address the topic of the so called "under done Spirit" When fans like us love someone like Jewel with the passion that we do, it tends to clog our minds of reality sometimes! It's like being able to date a supermodel who does drugs, steals, and kills people. You look past who the person really is and you see what you want to see (that kinda pertains to Jewel, kinda." We, as EDA's, have certain expectations out of Jewel and some think we deserve these expectations for some unknown reason! But one thing you have to realize is that Jewel sings because she wants to and she loves to do so! It's not about the money with Jewel and you should respect that! We shouldn't expect that Jewel sing the same kind of song everyday, that gets old! You all should know this, Jewel makes the majority of her songs from experiences. She sings what she knows! You can't expect her to sing what she doesn't want to or like to or what was already sung! People do change! I do realize that some of you are just a little perturbed that this CD isn't along the lines of POY and you are trying to get over that! I think some of us need to just take a step or 3 back and give yourself from Jewel, experience another joy in life besides her! Thank you for your time! ** §cott S.** -Big Sexy Angel "THE WORLD CAN ONLY GO AROUND IF WE WANT IT!" I know I may sound stupid, but I *FINALLY* got "Pieces of You" today and God, *takes a deep breath* the CD is amazing! Every song is just so incredible. I got the CD today after begging mom to take me to the music store :) I thought "Spirit" was breath-taking, but wow, "Pieces of You" is just, indescribable (sp). I'm not quite sure which album I favor yet, but all I have to say after buying both of her CDs, I know who now is my favorite artist (yup! you guessed it! Puffy Daddy! lol, just kidding, Jewel, silly!) Well, guess I shall be going now, I have to hit the little play button on my boombox again, the CD just now got to the end. *big smiles* Ciao my fellow EDA'S. - --Sonora ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Nov 1998 21:38:52 EST From: Krz4catz@aol.com Subject: Re: From Mr. BB (Alan in Wonderland) :) I just skimmed over what Mr BB wrote last digest, and I don't know if he wanted us to interpret it this way, or not, but it got me thinking.... We're here gabbing about Jewel's dresscode and all that, while we are forgetting that one reason we're EDA's is to help others and share the kindness and everything that Jewel gives to us, to the less fortunate... I'm gonna be busy this year, because my sis is getting married and everything, but I think that we should start a new project for Christmas... Maybe if someone has the time, they could start something new? I wish I could lead a new project, but since I'm busy, I will only be able to help out on it with the other angels. Try to post any replies or ideas on the board :) Thanks I appreciate it! I just turned MTV on and they're doing this thing where Jesse (the weird vj! cutie guy) is hiding in some of the 25 video's of the decade and well they were recapping. . . and Dave said that one of the clues was "rowboat" and there is a rowboat in YWMFM (no?) and so i guess he was in Jewely's! oh well did anyone see it/know if it'll come on again? I'm looking for tab to songs from Spirit. I have to play at a Christmas open house this weekend (a woman's club, no less...jewel? like in a ruby? I can hear it now!) and I want to play some modern songs that kind of have the holiday message....I already have Hands (think I'll play it on keyboard) but I'd especially like to have What's Simple Is True. And btw, my Net is down, so unfortunately I can't follow any links now,but if anybody has tabs they could send in an email, that'd be sooper. :) Also, if anybody happens to have (or have access to) the lyrics for the Cowboy Junkies song "Angel Mine," would you please send those? I can play that on guitar but I can't decipher all the words in the song....thank you! Spirit debut this week pretty well and came in at #15. On another issue I got **Have a Little Faith In Me** sung by Jewel (it rocks!!!) as one of those bad, bad files the other day and after hearing it thought how great in would have been on Spirit, maybe it could be released as a bside on a single or something cause I think its fan-bloody-tastic. Think I am going to have to put the Phenomenon soundtrack on the shopping list!!!! Wouldn't it be great if Jewel put out a compilation album containing all the songs she has sung for movies etc, I know there may not be that many at the moment but in the future maybe. The ones I know of are: *Have a little faith in me *Emily *Foolish games *V-12 Caddy *Face of Love (though it didn't make it, an excellent song) *Quiet warrior *You make lovin fun *Under the water *Rudolph + the CCR song she may be singing. Anyone heard any more on that?!? any others?!? think I am going to sit here and dream of such an album for a while :) Craig. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 05:33:08 +0100 From: Cris Eichler Subject: Re: boy do I have a lot to say Carolyn wrote: > *~"Spirt Will Have To Grow On Me" > never, ever, make a cd grow on you. if ya dont like it, ya dont like > it! if you constantly listen to a cd you dont like, youll hate it > more! Oh boy, do I have to disagree on that.... :-) If you really follow this policy you're bound to miss out on some great music... I didn't like almost all the albums that I consider my most cherished possessions today, when I listened to them for the first time. Of course there are CDs that you will never like, no matter how often you listen to them. But music that can keep you interested for years and years has to be quite complex or at least quite different from your usual radio stuff, otherwise it would soon bore you. And it's just very unlikely that you'll like a such a complex/different piece of music after your first listen. It's just too much to take in all at once. But it keeps you interested and the more listens you give it the clearer the picture becomes. I for example love the Progressive Rock of the 1970's Genesis, but believe me, when I heard those albums for the first time some 12 years ago I couldn't stand them. "What a mountain of noise...." I thought, but I kept listening because they sounded interesting somehow... Well, up to this day I have listened to those albums probably a few thousand times, they've grown on me and I grew to love 'em and I discover something new every time I hear those songs. I seriously doubt that you'll be able to say the same thing about a song like "Hands" twenty years from now, which is particularly sad because we know very well that Jewel is capable of writing songs that can stand the test of time....
