This dichotomy of those reviewing Spirit can even be witnessed in their reaction to individual songs -- thus one writer calls Fat Boy "a minimalist gem" while another labels it "an ill-advised" blah blah blah. Those critics who don't like Jewel also appear to be those who are most ignorant of the subject they are paid to write about -- like the obscure Boston reviewer who thought they were making a brilliant observation in pointing out that Jewel's "biggest hit (YWMFM) was written by someone else". If they'd actually checked the song credits they'd realize that "someone else" is Jewel and Poltzy!!! I've come to believe that the negative reviews are really a good thing -- it means that Jewel is opposing the status quo, and, in her own unique way, has crafted a form of protest music that is most relevant today. As well, it flows from a grand tradition -- and since the world is much more cynical today it means she exposes this fissure more clearly. Generations ago, folk-singer Woody Guthrie said: "I hate a song that makes you think that you are not any good. I hate a song that makes you think that you are just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing. Because you are too old or too young or too fat or too slim or too ugly or too this or too that. Songs that run you down or poke fun at you on account of your bad luck or hard travelling. I am out to fight those songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood. I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world and that if it has hit you pretty hard and knocked you for a dozen loops, no matter what color, what size you are, how you are built, I am out to sing the songs that make you take pride in yourself and in your work. And the songs that I sing are made up for the most part by all sorts of folks just about like you." The same philosophy of compassion can be heard in Jewel's songs -- and the folks who are listening are you and me, millions of us. If some too-cool music reviewer has a problem with that, well, sometimes it be that way... :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 23:22:47 -0600 From: "Michael Santos" Subject: Jewel WWW Message Board Hey ya all: I posted about this a few days ago, but the message board was down. But no, that's not the song I'm talking about, and possibly only MuchMusic fans have heard of it. Anyone here ever heard of her song, "Our Last Dance Rodeo". She played this song live early in the year on, Muchmusic's "Intimate and Interactive". Since I have only "heard" this song and I have no lyrics sheet. I have this song on tape. Question is, what would you's do for this song, well I am planning on making "one" copy to whom ever has the most amount of copies of video's and/or radio broadcasts on tape. I am willing to make a trade. You send me your list, I will go over it, if I like what I see, I will not only send you the mystery song, but I'll send you the entire taping of Jewel's Intimate and Interactive on MuchMusic. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998 09:40:46 PST From: "Steve Garner" Subject: Down So Long chords hey everyone! I figured out the chord progression for "Down So Long". Here it is, in case anyone would like to know how to play it: INTRO/VERSES: Am, G, F, F# CHORUS: G, F, C, C/B, Am, Am/G A couple quick notes about the chords: in the intro and verses, you quickly slide up to the F# chord from the F, just to get that quick little transition you hear in the song. Also, when you play the chorus, add an F and G at the end the last time through, to make the transition back to the verse progression. It's a simple song to play, but a fun one! This be Keren, a newbie member of the list. First off, I'd like to say that you all seem like great people. This list is so neat! As you can prolly tell, I just got a computer, as well. I am so behind the times! Anyway, let me introduce myself. Like i said, I'm Keren. I was originally born in Israel, so I was really delightfully surprised when I found out about Abby. Hi Abby! anywho, I moved from Israel to Vegas, NV (any other Vegas people or Nevadan EDA'S out there?!) when I was 5 years old. Just for Abby's info, we lived in Herzilyah. I am now almost 17(Dec. 29) and attend the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing, and Visual Arts ( LVA for short!) I am a violinist in the highest orchestra there. I am a Junior and an utterly confused person when it comes to the computer and this list. I didn't know there was so much angelfood lying about in the world! The best I can come up with is POY, Spirit, Quiet Warrior on a cassette tape I recorded off my friend's CD, and a taped appearance on the Oprah show when A Night Without Armor came out. So, Please, if anyone can sell me some Angelfood, or show me where Ican get some, let me know. Also, I would love it if some can give me a list of all the abbreviations you use. So far, all I can figure out is POY and YWMFM. Help! For those who haven't deleted this yet, thank you! I would gladly accept any personal e-mails to start up friendships, talk Jewel stuff, and I also need a mentor! Thanx to all! ~ EDA Keren " That which doesn't kill us, makes us stranger" (Okay..so it isn't Jewel..but you gotta admit...ti's a damn cool quote.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998 09:49:42 PST From: "Mystic Ether" Subject: (SJC) Happy Thanksgiving!! (and Jewel articles) I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. I'll be lucky if my fiancée can go through dinner without killing my parents. But anyways, in reply to all the Jewel-hating articles that have come lately, I have to say this: Reporters generally don't like when real people becoming popular singers(i.e. Jewel). They want hard edged crap that helps the majority of people forget about reality. Most of the press doesn't like reality and honesty. And until they do, Jewel isn't going to be high on their list of favorites. But isn't it nice to know we on this list are awake and intelligent enough to handle honest music. Have a great day everyone, and let's keep the in-law homicide rate down :). - -Beth ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998 10:42:45 -0800 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Re: Spirit Reviews... Hi all -- it's been pointed out to me that record reviewers are bound to write not just about the good things they hear in an artist's work; in case my last post caused any confusion on that point -- I know and appreciate that's their job, only sometimes reviews seem to not be about the music -- and that's what I'm talking about... intelligent reviewers give you a reason to believe their opinions -- good or bad -- are valid; what I'm seeing in the Jewel reviews is that those reviewers who display ignorance of the subject (e.g. falsely claiming Jewel didn't have a hand in writing YWMFM) seem to respond to her music based upon their own cynicism and personal philosophies -- they aren't judging the music as music, but instead are attacking it based upon personal politics by being so explicit in her message Jewel can have a polarizing effect on reviewers -- especially with Spirit seeing as how it's all about beliefs, values and ideals that the more cynical in our society sneer at... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998 12:03:01 PST From: "Tiger Moon" Subject: Re: Spirit reviews -from the sublime to the ridiculous- prove >Not that it matters much at all what a bunch of music critics write >about anything in this world, but it seems to me that Jewel's music >is something like a litmus test -- those who are jaded, cynical, >mean or bitter tend to dislike or loathe her songs and those who >possess some glimmer of human kindness (or lots of it) tend to give >her favourable reviews. Publicity of any kind sells records. Bad or good, it keeps her name active and her music "hot". I just bought a copy of Spirit. I must say that she has matured with her lyrics greatly. This is not to say previous songs were not great, they were. She has added a depth and scope to these new songs which many big name artists can't even begin to aproach. She reminds me in some way of a female Bernie Taupin. There will always be critics, that's just part of the game. What's important is that there are people like us who can hear and understand what she is trying to say. We "get it". We see her as a multi-faceted Jewel that just keeps sparkling brighter and brighter as the years go by. Just my humble little opinion. TigerMoon (Blue, is that you...) (What's simple is true) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998 12:36:41 PST From: "Tiger Moon" Subject: Spirit Question Hi all, I was just wondering if there is any online info on the CD artwork. The CD itself looks like a large full moon with a single feather. I was just wondering what's the story, if any behind this. I just finished listening to Spirit. Wow. The ability to capture with words such complex thoughts and emotions is truly a gift. "And I am wanting. And I am needing you here. Inside the Absence of fear" The emotion she is able to portray with her voice is astounding. You here and feel the words as if you experience it yourself. They say that music is the souls expression and the hearts voice. The soul and heart behind this voice is a very bright Jewel indeed. TigerMoon (Swallow the Moon,...) Spirit doesn't make it to the top, although selling 368.000 copies would usually be enough for #1... this week however Gart Brooks sets a new record (with a little record companys "cheating" with the new way the sales data is being posted) selling 1.085.000 copies... yes you read right, beating the first week-record Pearj Jam's Vs. by 135.000 copies... and even single-week sales of The Bodyguard OST by 24.000... #2 comes from the Method Man selling 411.000 and then our Jewel come in at #3 Spirit she comfortably beat such debuts as: #4 Mariah Carey - No. 1's (221.000 units) #6 Offspring - Americana (198.000) Surprisingly Whitney Huston is currently only 13th, but I expect it to peak higher... as well as Spirit. AND NOW... as Billboard HOT 100 changes it's policy... basically now even songs that are not comercially released as a single, will be included on the chart solely on the airplay... you can find all details HERE: http://www.billboard.com/charts/newhot100.html WHICH MEANS: Jewel debuts with hands this week in HOT 100 at #24 while on Adult Top 40...
