Spirit entered this week's chart at number 54, something that Pieces Of You never achieved. To highlight how different the UK and US music tastes are, you may be interested to know that the expected top three US albums this week by Garth Brooks, Method Man and Jewel entered the UK chart at 57, 49 and 54 respectively. Also Hands slumped in the UK singles charts this week from 41 to 74. VH1 - Talk Music Jewel made a very brief appearance on their News This Week section. This programme was broadcast last night and is repeated tonight (24 Nov) at midnight. BBC Radio 2 - Girls and Guitars Jewel will be featured in this new series on Thursday 3rd December at 10 pm. Paramount Channel - David Letterman Show I believe Jewel's Thanksgiving appearance on this show will be broadcast in the UK on Friday (27 Nov) at midnight. I was hoping maybe you guys could help me out..... There are a couple of things that I need (want!) so if you know where I can get them, please respond!!!! First of all, I'm looking for the following TV apperances of Jewel's. 1. the receint Nov 14th SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE performance (ya know, the "short skirt" one) hehe j/k! 2. the old SNL skit making fun of Jewel being from Alaska and living in her van. 3. the receint SNL skit with Jennifer Love Hewitt singing YWMFM 4. Poems By Jewel (She read a number of poems in 1min slots on VH1 a few months ago) I only got 2 of them on tape :o( Also I'm conducting a desperate search for some of the following guitar tablatures!! 1. Absence of Fear 2. Down So Long 3. Innocence Maintained 4. What's Simple Is True (Winter Song) I've seen the majority of these TABS up on web sites before, and unfortunatly I was stupid enough NOT to download them when I saw them... so when I went back to get them a few days ago.. the links were lost...and the page couldn't be found. :*( Does any sweet person happen to have these TABS lying around on some floppy disk under a pile of dirty clothes in their room? or saved in some lost file in the dark, cobwebby corners of your computer? If you do, PLEASE send them over!! THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR TIME AND HELP!!!!! Sounds good, eh? Well, on the other side, it writes: "Jewel has, what the English call "quite a sizeable balcony". No comment. Thanks, Beth ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 15:25:52 PST From: "Erin Benoit" Subject: New EDA's Opinion My Story: It was around Christmas time 1997 and I was helping my boyfriends mom decorate the tree. Afterwards I joined him in the living room to watch TV. Only half paying attention I think we were watching the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. All of a sudden I heard this angellic voice coming from the screen. I looked up only to be captivated by her innocent face and passionate eyes. I was sitting there surrounded by my boyfriends family and him, and crying! I fell in love instantly. She was and is the most passionate singer/songwriter I've ever known. I looked around at the other faces in the room and at their reactions to the exact same thing I just witnessed and I heard all the bad talk right away. I couldn't believe anyone could have a seperate opinion from mine on a subject of that importance. Needless to say the guy is no longer my BF. I instantly bought her POY CD. Foolish Games was the song I had originally saw, and it is my favorite on the POY album. I related instantly to the other songs on the album. I tried letting my family listen to it on our holidays and they told me in no uncertain terms to shut the sh*t off. (Pieces of You was playing, the part about faggot) I couln't believe that my family, the one that raised me, could be so prejudgmental. Summer of 1998 I decided to see if there was anything on the internet about Jewel. Imagine the surprise I got when I did the search. And my head is still swimming with all the information. I was able to download a lot of her early work and heard 3 of her songs on Spirit before the album came out. I don't know why I expected them to be the same, but Deep Water was so passionate I fell in love, and DW on Spirit is softer, and slower and not expected. I have trouble with change but I think most of us do. Jewel is a celebrity but a rare one, because she is writing for her and her fans and no matterhow produced or acoustic her albums get, her heart shines through it all. She is also the most generous artist letting us inside her head as a teenager by publishing A Night Without Armour. I haven't been able to get it yet but I've read some of her poetry and it's easy to see where her songs come from now. I got Spirit the day it came out expecting it to be sold out right away, but it wasn't. Just like Pieces of You (song) Fat Boy is the new lost soul in Spirit and the last line of Fat Boy explains everything. I came across this list about 3 days ago and let me just say this... If I were Jewel I would love us too! You guys are the best support, the best friends, even not knowing any of you personally, I feel close to you already. You are so friendly and I just wish I knew as much information that you all do so that I could share more often. Thank-you beyond thank you's can go. *********************************************************** "And she wrinkled her nose when she said it; that's how you know she meant it" Jewel, Jessica Angel of the Zodiac ************************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 18:31:24 EST From: PENNY16161@aol.com Subject: Hands tabs I found these at: http://www3.wildfire.com/~ag/gma/gma.php3/songid=16326 Hope this helps some people. In response to the Rolling Stone critique, I did not really enjoy it. To say the least! First off, what is this You Were Meant For Me song crotique for Spirit...I've read this a few times now...my CD does not have this song on it...please explain to me someone... So, now about her repetitiveness...I love that! How she ties each song to the next is by her repeated statements. Her heart waiting for lightning and You (I want to know who you is....just the gossip in me hee hee) She mentions chains a few times in different songs. She has a theme about coming undone at the seams (501 Beauty Queen) (Another thing I'd like to know is concrete and honey like evil and good? Just a thought) The whole Fragile Flames theme too! Just a few thoughts...any responses? *********************************************************** "And she wrinkled her nose when she said it; that's how you know she meant it" Jewel, Jessica Angel of the Zodiac ************************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 20:36:13 -0500 From: Allan Subject: Jewel coming to Canada... I'm sure you have all heard the saying "if you can't say something nice then........" well that about sums in up. I just want to know, whatever happened to Jewel, her geeeeetar, and that amazing voice the so captured me from the first time I heard POY?!? Its true, its a simple album(POY), a girl and her guitar and I think that is what people liked about it. The songs where nothing really outstanding but they were powerful, different I guess, and the album showed a very diverse voice capable of amazing things, but at least from my point of view this is all missing from **Spirit**. I was chatting to a former eda the other day and they said to me, you know, Jewel can now be summed up in two words from the lyric of a song by the "Travelling Wilburys" (sp??), I thought this would be interesting, they went on and said "Overexposed, commercialized" Now the more I think about it, the more it rings true!! the angel who lives in a place where after a week, **Spirit** has already lost a place in the same CD changer where POY still resides!!!
