"POY vs Spirit" Seems like alot of you are having a go at "Spirit" just because its different. In my last post to the list i said i loved all Jewel songs, and the songs on "Spirit" are no exception. Jewel did an Interview with a New Zealand News paper over the phone the other day and she commented on the difference on the two albums. So heres what she had to say: POY was "just a very honest Polaroid of who I was when I was 19." "So at least this way you saw me as who I was in all my awkwardness and potential, and on this one (Spirit) you see as I've grown" Jewel uses her music to make the world a better place for us to live in. She doesn't care if she gets another 10 million copies sold. Heres another quote for you: "My goal is to be a good humanitarian as well as a good songwriter. All I do is use my songs as an extension of my thought process. I did it before I got signed, I'll do it after. Save your money" Thanks for reading, Kev "Hold on to the World" - Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Nov 1998 16:31:26 -0800 From: dijewe1@juno.com (Diana Ruiz) Subject: about the 2 songs and Jewel on Rosie Hey again, Man, once I get started on posting, I can't stop, hehe. Anyway, I remember someone saying that "Down so Long" and Life Uncommon" make spirt, well, It's TRUE except they forgot to mention Jupiter!!!! I love that song!!!!!!!! I love all the songs but mostly those three. When Jewel was on Rosie, it was funny the way she was making fun of her own songs like YWMFM and WWSYS. She said that it sounded like she took singing lessons from kermit the frog, hahaha!!!! It's not true but it was funny!!! She sings GREAT!!!! That lady that told me that Jewel was leaving and couldn't receive my call on Loveline said, "well, you got to hear the song" I said "yeah" (very sad, I was about to cry, I swear) and she said "wasn't that song sad?" and I said, "yeah, I've heard it before" she said "She was GREAT wasn't she?" and I said, "yeah, she always is" (I was sooooo SAD!!) I think that I did cry because I was soooo close to talking with Jewel!!! Anyway, that's not in the recording because she told me on the phone not through the radio. Just wanted to share that. okay, no more post for today. ttyl {\O/} /_\ Diana an EDA FOREVER!! What just happened? Who are you and what have you done with > Jewel?"? to be completely honest, when i first listened to spirit i was upset, disappointed, and even a little depressed-don't get me wrong-i like spirit-i think it's a great cd, but it's just not like POY--i loved POY for its honesty, vulnerability, and bluntness-it was just jewel and her acoustic-which is what i've always loved about jewel---but spirit is very produced, w/ the band and everything--i think spirit is a great album but it is not POY and that just took some getting used to for me... Hey all -- I've managed to catch up on sleep post the NYC/MTV invasion -- it was wonderful to see so many EDAs in New York! and even if there's tighter security at MTV's Times Square studios than there is between the Canada/U.S. border, it was a blast!!! what an experience all 'round -- music and spirit meet in Manhattan Now I'm home and able to listen to "Spirit" -- it's wonderful, too; hope everyone is enjoying this new recording... I picked up "Shout" mag in NYC and found this Jewel-related mention in it: "Is Beau Sia the hardest working man in poetry? 'I have a lot of wrist problems because I write a lot,' Beau told us. 'I have to take breaks because I have weird patterns of writing, and because, otherwise, I'll overdo it.' A champion at the National Poetry Slams, Beau often goes head to head with other poets in front of drunken hordes of listeners at places like Nuyorican Poets cafe. His CD, Attack! Attack! Go!, is now available in stores, and he can also be seen in the Sundance Jury Prize-winning film, Slam. Beau's book of poems, inspired by Jewel's bestseller, Night Without Armor, is called Night Without Armor II: The Revenge, and is currently in its second printing. 'Jewel inspired me to write a book of poems. I don't think I could ask for anything more from an artist. I never listened to the Rolling Stones and wrote an album, but I read Jewel and wrote a book,' Beau points out." Mike replied: >I think it all means she's sold 8 million PoY's in the USA (not sure if >this includes Canada) and 10 million including all the sales overseas. Canadian album sales are counted separately from US ones. In Canada, an album is considered gold at 50,000 copies, platinum at 100,000 copies and diamond at 1,000,000 copies. Sarah McLachlan's Surfacing was just declared diamond in Canada. I understand POY sold 8.5 million in the US; I'm not sure of how many were sold in Canada. Remember, Canada has a population of around 30,000,000 and the US has a population of around 300,000,000. Hey! I just heard that "you're gonna hear a lot of this song in the coming months from Jewel" on this radio show that plays only women artists called "Today's Women." I really like this song a lot and think it is the absolute best on the album, so I'm all up for it, but has anyone else heard anything about it? Also, I thought this album was something like a holdover and that Jewel was going to put out a "real" album next year. How come I'm not hearing anymore about that? I remember when we all first heard about "Spirit" is was being deemed as a 'holiday' album and that another would be released perhaps a little less than a year later. Is that still happening? I've just been wondering about that, and all the hype about "Spirit" seems mundane to me...I mean, I know it's her first album in 4 years...but if she's going to come out with a new one next year, why hype this one up so much? idunno... jacob: dairyman; disney-freak ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Nov 1998 20:48:45 -0800 From: "George Marticorena" Subject: An old Jewel Television Appearance It has been ages since I posted but here it goes.
