Enter From the East is absolutely beautiful though. Does anyone have any tabs or tab sites with some stuff on Spirit like Down So Long, I haven't been able to find that one. Aaron The Steel Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 18:41:15 -0800 From: "Tom" Subject: Is "what's simple is true" an old song? Hi, I was just wondering when the song "what's simple is true" was written. I remember reading from the list e-mail that the song used to be called "winter's song". Just curious. Also, the song "life uncommon" according to a post from puro1st@aol.com is a song she performed before as well. Does anyone know which songs on the album a new, non-angelfood songs? Thanks a lot. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 21:55:48 EST From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: I've Got Spirit (and I don't mean the album) OK yes I do mean the album. Oh well, I just wanted to have a subject called "I've Got Spirit". Like so many other EDAs, I am very impressed after only hearing the first two minutes of "Deep Water". Actually it's been three minutes now and I'm disappointed. The song sounds better and more serious slowed down but it is not nearly as interesting during the "We compromise our health, sacrifise our pride" part that she spits out at the audience in concert. Oh well...I think it's weird taht there are odd versions of all her songs. Sometimes it's a plus, sometimes it's a negative, sometimes it's both. Oh yeah "What's Simple Is True" is on. I love this osng (loved it since it was called "Winter Song"). YEA! I just played "Down So Long" and she starts singing "Booh doo be doo". Isn't that sort of dorky? And you guys think this song will be her next single? I do think it's a great song, but all these songs feel like I'm listening to a concert. I'm familiar with all of them and I can't form an opinion on them because they're juts new versions and new material. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 22:02:22 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: MrSH: Spirit, Some First Impressions Little tribute to the late (of this list, he's still alive and well of course) Mr.BB in the subject of this message. Anyway, as one of the longest standing members of the list I would like to share my first impressions of Jewel's first new album in albout 4 years-Spirit. Few quick things off the top. The album is neither excellent nor horrible, it's quite peaks and valleys. It is a bit overproduced but not as bad as I thought. Why isn't Jewel playing guitar on hardly any tracks? Was surprised and disappointed by that and hopefully it will not continue when she plays live. A lot of the songs are well-written but suffer from a bad presentation, how you sing or say something is as important as what you sing or say. Context. It is a problem that has plagued many greats in many genres of music, from Dylan to Springsteen to X. But anyway, OK, onto the album: DEEP WATER: One of my all-time favorite songs, it was doing really well until about 2 minutes into the song where the overproduction and vocal overdubbing really took something powerfully natural and emotional away from the song. WHAT'S SIMPLE IS TRUE: This song is simple, that is true. It sure isn't any good though. HANDS: Skipped it. I refuse to play this track on my CD player. KISS THE FLAME: Pretty trite, unoriginal. Weak song. DOWN SO LONG: Now we're getting somewhere. Catchy but maintains it's credability and is still a very strong song. Excellent song, very well written. Here is where the album starts to get good. INNOCENCE MAINTAINED: Not quite the live acoustic version but very nice cut here. Like it. JUPITER: I don't know what Alan(MrBB) was raving about on this one. I thought it was pretty mediocre save a few quirky chords here and there. Maybe it'll grow on me. FAT BOY: This song loses something seeing that it isn't introduced as a song about the cruelty that drove a young man to suicide but it is very powerful anyway, vocally Jewel really is vicious on this one. Strong song. Solo acoustic(yay). ENTER FROM THE EAST: Disturbing. And I don't know if it's disturbing in a good way either like say Nicotine Love or Amen. This song conjured up way too many harsh and unsettling images for me. Who is the narrator of this song? Whoever it is is a person who is frighteningly masochistic, perhaps the song is saying something about the female subconscious desire to be dominated, slavery, the lynching of blacks, and rape fantasies. Creepy. BARCELONA: Unimpressed. LIFE UNCOMMON: Most glaring example of a song with excellent lyrics that is presented badly, like a filet mignon served on a garbage can lid. DO YOU: Very very impressed. Best song on the CD I'd say. Shades of "Sometimes it be That Way" and even a little Ani DiFranco. ABSENCE OF FEAR: This song exemplifies the album very well. It teeters on that line between greatness and pretentious cheesiness. The first minute is fantastic, the rest, time will tell, I hopeit doesn't turn into something Celine Dion-esque(repulsive) to me, or something like the radio cut of Foolish Games(annoying and underwhelming). THAT LITTLE BIRD: Great way to end the album. Not a big fan of Jewel's vocals, wish they just left Nedra alone. But still, stirring, inspiring, powerful, and a down ending, a real surprise to many I'm sure the first time they hear it. So that's it. I know I am very critical of Jewel but that's just because I know how immense her potential her is and how downright ethereal and perfect she is when she is "on," I've seen it in person so it's hard for me to accept anything resembling mediocrity. I like the album, I am not disappointed as I feared I might be. Yeah it has some weak songs on it, but it also contains some truly superior work. She got to hang with him in the evening but then when it got late (the clock became a bullethole, cruel and unkind), she had to leave maybe never seeing him again. She was attracted to him, wanted to make love with him, but he was a mere stranger. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 00:51:01 -0400 (AST) From: Jesse A McDonald Subject: Re: Hands video question > Someone posted a few weeks ago that they didn't think the Jewel video > looked like a real disaster. I think it was a bomb that exploded. What > do you'll think. The surrounding houses and what little landscape you can see seems relatively untouched, so I do think it was something extremely localized, like a bomb. Everything seems demolished, but not so much charred and certainly not blazing, so I don't think it was a fire. Actually, I think that the reason it's so ambiguous is to make a point that it doesn't matter what the problem is, as long as you try to solve it. I don't know if that's a worthwhile point to make, but that's something I sense in the video. word. | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 00:21:14 EST From: LuverMb20@aol.com Subject: jewel on loveline My friend informed me that Jewel is gonna be on Loveline (the radio one) in L.A. tomorrow night 11-19-98. But, as far as her being serious about actually makeng a county album, I doubt it. The reason is that she likes to catagorize her music only as honest, without regard to genre.
