Tanner Evans of Planet Jewel: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/1023/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 18:15:02 EST From: Jeweleda1@aol.com Subject: Jewel talking about her teeth on Rosie Hey angels, I'm sure all who watched rosie heard Jewel talk about her teeth. And when rosie asked about getting it fixed her response shocked me. Not because of her. but because how she perceive many of her fans. And the thing is she was right. There are so many fans that are more worried about what she does to herself rather then what she has done with her music. I've been a fan for over 2 years now. and maybe that isn't long enough to understand what went on on the list before but i'm sure that this petty things being said like, "oh my god jewel is dressing differently" or "i hope she never changes her teeth cuz it just won't be her" just weren't part of the list as they are now. Let Jewel be Jewel just because she changes something on the surface doesn't mean that inside she isn't the same person as she always has been. And though some may think that we as edas have never said anything like"if she changes her teeth i won't like her anymore because she won't be natural" (i know that isn't the exact quote), it seems that people almost imply it. that if she changes her appearance she just won't be the same. It's Jewel, Guys and Gals. Think of what you first fell in love with. for many it was her voice. now think of all that you love about her now. her voice, her caring nature, her love for helping, how she has help some of us with her music, how she has inspired so many of us...i could go on forever...Just think of these things and then think of all the trival things she has changed. Does it effect the things that you first fell in love withabout her, does it effect that she inspired you, or does it effect you believeing she is a truly caring person. well I know it doesn't for me. Sorry if i've offended anyone. just need to say something and get this all off my chest. It saddens me that jewel feels her fans won't like her if she changes something about her appearance. Those being, "Reflections of God". My question is, for anyone who might know this...why isn't it sung that way on the CD? Or is this just something she's added since the master recordings were done? I kind of like it better, it changes up the monotony of the end of that song. >> Some people didn't understand that "We are God's hands, we are God's heart, we are God's eyes" was to say we reflected God. Some might have thought Jewel was saying there is no God, that we are God. So she adds that line so superficial people won't misread her words. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 18:31:04 -0600 From: "Gia Hua" Subject: [Poll] POY vs. Spirit I know it is kind of early to be running a poll like this but I wanted to hear what everyone thought of the new album. God Bless! ~Daniel~ hi, i just thought you'd like to know, in a song recorded especially for "the craft" soundtrack, called 'under the water,' jewel does rap! it's the coolest song - it's so un-jewel, it's like hip-hop. but it's really cool! see ya's sleepy angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 19:31:03 EST From: XcRiEbAbYX@aol.com Subject: Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org i just got on this list today and after all the mail i have already received i have come to a conclusion...i think many of you are much too critical of Jewel. I just found it interesting that Jewel has started using the whole theme of doing stuff form the aspect of what she will think of it when she is reflecting on her life from her deathbed, since Steve Poltz often says and has said that he judges everything by the "80 year old man litmus test" which is basically the same concept. I'm not, by any means, saying that there is anything wrong with this. I think it is a very good concept, and I like seeing these connections. Of course, at one of the first Poltz solo shows that I saw (last March), he had said something like "we should all be nice to each other, because that is what really matters" during the show, and I was like "yeah! in the end only kindness matters!" so it appears to be a two-way street. ;op and hey, have a great day, everyday!!! We are not supposed to be on the list because we are die-hard fans of Jewel's breasts, midriff, legs or ass. 2. If Jewel wants to wear a neon green kilt, tye died socks, or absolutely nothing then she can, and you have to respect that. 3. We are not any better than anybody else just because we are Jewel fans 4. We should not say that we aren't as die-hard a list (or whatever) just because more people have joined. 5. we should not get all hyped about some appearence she's going to do if all we are going to do is critisize her after we see it. I'm really glad that that information will now be much more widely available on Jewel's web site. Sharing her wonderful talent and what she has to say with as many people as possible is, I think, what it's all about. And thanks, Mr BB, for your forbearance with us, too. And, while I'm in gratitude mode, thanks to those EDAs who post reviews of 'Spirit' and interviews with Jewel. These are really important especially to non-US EDAs like myself who otherwise would never get to read them. Which brings me to Paul Schreiber's post with article on Jewel and 'Spirit' in SD Union Trib where it said (in part): 'In fact, Jewel earned money singing in jazz bars when she attended high school on a partial scholarship at Interlochen, a Michigan music and arts academy. A great admirer of Ella Fitzgerald, she hopes to eventually record an album of jazz standards, such as Cole Porter's "Too Darn Hot," a frequent highlight of Jewel's concerts. "Jazz is one of my favorite things," she said.' That is such good news!!! It's something I'd hoped Jewel would do from the first time I heard her sing 'A Very Big Girl'. I guess the reason she hasn't sung too much in a bluesy/jazzy vein so far is, as she has said, she can't play jazz and blues on her guitar too well. But she is such a great bluesy/jazzy singer. I'd love to hear more. And it comes out on 'Spirit', particularly in 'Down So Long'. She's not restricted herself on this album but experimented with new songs and sounds and breathed new life into some wonderful 'old' songs (though I must admit 'Deep Water' was quite a shock when I first heard it, but now I like it as much as the older versions). The whole album is daring, defiant, so positive (though there is, I think, a little self irony there, too, say in 'Do You'), and some real fun as well. It is, like Jewel, just beautiful. I'm just asking about the whole Dylan White thing happening in downtown Toronto this Saturday. Well, I know nothing about any of it really, I don't even know who he is, but I do have that time to kill downtown on Saturday. I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on all the stuff I don't know, or might be interested in meeting up or something. I'm supposed to be at the Reverb at 2:00 for a sound check for the concert that I'm playing that night, so it's really perfect timing. P,lus you should come check me out! Okay, also, about the frequent use in Spirit of the metaphor of a flame. I think really it's a metaphor for the inner "spirit" that's inside all of us that is so easy to put out hence "fragile". I think if you look at the context of each time it comes up it fits that interpretation. Plus it gives the whole album that theme feel. ( Maybe it should have been called "Flame"?) And lastly I'm wondering if anyone has read "God Exists Quietly" in ANWA and has any thoughts (project). Or knows if there's any recording anywhere of Jewel reciting it. I hate to be one to add to all the fuss and stuff, but, since I've been emailing, defending myself all week, I figure I'll post something, so that hopefully everyone will understand. Its probably just me, but I keep feeling like maybe all of these "you shouldn't like Jewel for what she wears, but for what she is" posts are perhaps an attack on what I said Saturday and Sunday. My issue was not that I like Jewel because of what she wears, and that I don't like her now because of her skirt on SNL. That is not the issue at all. The issue simply was that I wasn't satisfied with her outfit, and IMHO, its not acceptable to ME. If you liked it, fine, I really don't care, but I didn't like it. I still very much enjoy Jewel and her music. I still think shes a very beautiful person. I'm very happy with "Spirit", and am still continually motivated by her. I'm trying very hard not to say anything that is going to constitute a flame war, but I think this should be said. I think a lot of people here are taking conversation WAY too seriously. A very simple issue has turned into an incredible uproar. I know I'm probably only repeating what 50 million other people have been posting about, but.. oh well. I'm bored, and don't have anything else to do right now! I just wanted to write and say my appologies for anything I may have started, and wanted to remind everyone that life is too short to spend time bickering about such minor things. ...remember, uhh... nevermind, I don't remember. joe ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 01:37:09 -0000 From: "Barry" Subject: bad magazine!! you can find the disgusting review of spirit by NME here http://www.nme.com/scripts/frameserver.cgi?http://www.nme.com/reviews/review s/19981016113925reviews.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 20:18:05 EST From: NiKoS12@aol.com Subject: Jewel's comment about fixing her teeth...on Rosie Rosie said,"You could have that fixed if you wanted..." {{referring to jewel's teeth}} Jewel said, "No, b/c my fans would be 'but jewel if you change your teeth we won't love you b/c you won't be authentic.'" That comment is so true. This pertains to the SNL skirt also. "Jewel's not Jewel anymore, she's sluty...blah blah blah" I mean if Jewel did decide to have her teeth fixed, big deal. They are both delicious. - -Frank The Directing Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 19:44:53 -0600 From: Wyldfire Subject: Spirit Review (Please Read Carefully) Ok... Let me preface this by saying I like the new album. Spirit has some really good songs on it, and Jewel's voice is an exquisite instrument. That said, as a fan, I was slightly disappointed that I only "liked" the album. Spirit, as a whole, seemed to have lost the raw truth that POY had in abundance. She still writes from that truth- you can hear it- but also I hear the industry telling her to abandon the "storyteller" aspect of her songwriting, in favor of shorter, poppier, more marketable songs. I'm not saying that this is entirely wrong; I just think that she loses a lot of her originality if she lets this fall to the wayside. That said, I also hear her echoing many other artists- some of you have mentioned Tara McLean (sp?). I hear others as well; shades of Kansas in "Innocence Maintained" and "Enter From The East," Sarah McLachlan and Lisa Loeb in "Jupiter." Maybe this is just the result of her being exposed more to the world. I don't know. In short, I hope that whatever Jewel does next, she holds on to that quality which has made her one of my favorite artists- her originality and her steadfast determination to stay true to her beliefs. I'll probably be flamed for this- I'm sorry if I have offended anyone by saying these things, but it is true, for me. I am still a fan, but to me, the most important thing a fan can do is be honest about the artists they appreciate. Once again, I'll say I like Spirit, but I miss the intensity of POY. You lucky dog. lucky? nah, just fortunate i guess. now, if i had been picked to ask a question, that would've counted as 'lucky'. :) just ask amy. :) well, yesterday was interesting. first off, i had to work, so that's what i showed up wearing my freaking tie, which i was wearing on camera during TRL. it got too hot under the lights, and i took it off by the time Jewel TV started. after waiting in line forever, we finally all got inside the warmth of the studio. after a coat check (and beeper check, cell phone check, CHAP STICK check, car keys check, etc.) and a metal detector aided search, we all had to wait in a silly little line in two's. what is this?!?! freakin' kindergarten? ARGH! then we were lead to our seats two or four at a time. and yes, i said 'lead'. there was no choice. apparently they sat you where there was room, then moved people around according to the darkness and lightness of what they were wearing. poor jon reade was moved over because of his light ballcap. :( the pros and cons of where you sat depended on how you viewed things. you could either sit by the interview couch and hear everything that was said, or sit by the band area and get run over by the camera men. take your pick. either way, sitting on your ass for 2 hours hurt no matter where you sat. for TRL, it was basic TV "cue the audience applause" crap. but the enthusiasm was definitely not forced when jewel came out. it was exciting to see her so close again. the last time was over a year ago. and she had some friendly banter with the crowd which showed that she still down to earth, which was relieving. of course, it was funny how all these make-up people flocked to her during the first commercial break. it was like vultures to a carcass. and after jewel gave out cds outside, she came back in and taped "Down So Long" for a future airing when it becomes a single. that was very cool. i was actually hoping she'd play more for the hell of it. oh well. then she was quickly ushered out of the studio, but not before adrian du plessis got 2 autographs from her. go adrian! :) afterwards, a whole bunch of EDAs hung out in front of the Viacom building. some said their goodbyes, and the rest of us (about 20) went to the All-Star cafe for a very expensive dinner. ack! then we all split around 8pm or so and went our separate ways. it was a fun time, and it was great seeing everyone again, EDAs old and new. unfortunately, i won't have any pics to put on my site, because MTV didn't allow any cameras. bastards! :) but maybe i'll get the group shot ted berberian took. ted? :) well, that's it for now. take care.
