Does anyone know what songs were recorded for unplugged but not included in the broadcast. I am pretty sure there is at least one because on Who Will Save Your Soul and Last Dance Rodeo she was playing her Taylor 912c. In between those two songs however, when she is thanking Don Waas(I think that's how you spell his name), she is holding a Gibson Super Jumbo 200 and she doesn't play that guitar on any of the other songs on the broadcast either. Please let me know if you know what the cut out songs are. Thanks. I don't mean this as a personal slam at all, but was anyone else kinda grossed out by the pictures of the oiled up feet in the spirit album jacket? I don't mind feet like some people do, but I'm sorry,I just thought they were kinda heinous enough to mention. LOL. In fact, i couldn't read the lyrics on those pages, I was just too creeped out. ;-) - --------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 98 08:48:15 -0500 From: Paul Tabachneck Subject: Jewel TV; what on earth? I could not believe the behaviour I saw from the EDA's/assorted rabble outside of the studio. Looking at that runway, I knew no one was going to let her get on it, but the level of grubbery exceeded my expectations. People climbing over each other to get a promo copy of "Spirit"; Jeez, guys, get jobs and buy one! Jewel stopped being relevant, and free stuff took over. She was visibly disgusted; I can't blame her. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 08:04:43 EST From: Puro1st@aol.com Subject: Original Lyrics changed Hola, My first post in a looong time. I used to be on this from way back under a different email...anyway. I got the album and was disappointed with the way some of it turned out. I had heard most of it previously (through undisclosed sources) and someone had mentioned it yesterday. They slowed most of the songs down BIG TIME. Deep Water suffers hugely. Barcelona has a different sound altogether as well. In fact, I was wondering how they were going to finally release it. When she sings "Fly" it was awful to hear originally.....it (im not good at describing vocals at all!!!) was sung going up and up and up. Now it's almost this straight up sound. Weird. The thing that bothers me the most though are the changed lyrics to "Sounds of freedom song". I know thats not the title, It's early and i'm having a brain fart. But, it used to be "Songs of freedom", which sounds SO much better than "Sounds" it's scary. Also, the lyric "live lives of love and bravery" used to be "free your mind from mental slavery". Again, much better. And lastly, she sings"C'mon you unbelievers" used to be "Damn you unbelievers" I just thought it kinda weird. The version I listened to was Incredible. It was my favorite on the track before they made the changes. I don't think the changes are attributable to the Producer, Patrick Leonard. I think Jewel made most of them and the album was slowed down. It's makes a truly great album only great. ;-) My two cents. - -------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 15:57:59 +0200 From: Cris Eichler Subject: My take on Spirit (might be a little controversial) Hi all, before I get any deeper into this mail, let me make clear that I think Spirit is really a very good album, I like it and I'm sure I will listen to it over and over again...... but.... : This album kind of makes me angry...... why ? Well, because I think it shows merely 60 per cent of Jewel's amazing talents, as a songwriter as well as a singer. From a musical perspective the album suffers from it's theme of spirituality and the "we're all O.K." message if you ask me, because this has excluded a whole bunch of songs to appear on the album that are far superior to the vast majority of songs on Spirit. If I had to choose the 13 songs for the album, only two or three of the tracks currently on Spirit would have survived: Enter From The East, Jupiter, and maybe Deep Water (in it's original form). While the other songs on the album are in no way bad, I'd just give them a 10/10 while there are other, unreleased songs that I'd easily give a 12/10... :-) The album still is a major step forward from POY, so I'm not too surprised that a majority of the reviews I read are really god. From the standpoint of the "normal" casual listener and record buyer this album is probably a 9/10 but from my view as a Jewel fan who was heard a lot more than POY it's not more than a 6/10... sorry... What makes me angry is that I had really hoped for an album that shows all what she's capable of, so that you could say to your friends "You don't know jewel? Go and get Spirit..." This has not materialized. You still got to tell 'em that the album they're about to hear, while it is very good, doesn't paint an accurate picture of the artist..... :-( The biggest disappointment on Spirit has to be "Deep Water". I really don't like this sloooow version at all, and after I took another listen to the Jewelstock version I can only say that they have absolutely butchered the song. All the incredible power that this tune possessed is gone... Listen to the Jewelstock version again. The message of THAT Deep Water was "We MUST demand more, not from each other but more from OURSELVES !!" The message of the Spirit version is more like "Well I think we really should demand more, not necessarily from each other, but probably more from ourselves, but I'm not sure really..." Go figure.... On the positive side: Contrary to some other opinions I've read, I do like the way "Innocence Maintained" was changed and arranged. I think it's a song that has really grown up with Jewel. The production / the producer: Could you all please GET OFF MR LEONARD'S BACK ? When you talk about production of an album, you talk first and foremost about it's sound, not about the arrangement of the songs. It seems that many of you have confused this over the last couple of weeks... You may say many things about Spirit, but you can't say that it sounds bad. It is a very, very good production. Mr Leonard showed a great understanding of what Jewel is about and did NOT overproduce it at all. To my ears he did hardly anything to Jewel's voice, and as we all know that's not necessary either. Other than that, the album is a joy to listen to. Every instrument has it's own place and everything's coming together very nicely. Good job Patrick Leonard ! The band: Ever since I heard Jewel's arrangement of the National Anthem at the Superbowl, I was looking forward to hear a band on her next studio album. I wasn't disappointed. The songs that could need a band where arranged beautifully, while others were left a alone. In my mind the drumming is outstanding on a few tracks. The fact that I've been a fan of Luis Conte's work for quite some time doesn't hurt either, I suppose. The arrangements show that Jewel is not just a talented songwriter anymore. She has evolved into a capable musician. So, a good album after all.....if only............................ Cheers ! I took a four hour bus ride to get there (I'm from Rhode Island) but it was definitely worth it. Jewel looked even more beautiful in person, and I was in awe during her presence. As she was signing autographs, I couldn't quite reach to have her sign my POY cd, but a really nice guy standing near me got it to her and back to me, so I now have my POY cd signed which I'm happy about:) It was really great of her to do that for us! I was also very fortunate to meet some other EDA's (I was too high on life to remember everyone's names [sorry], but I do remember Lisa and her friend Ryan:). And if you caught all of Total Request, MTV recruited me to stand in front of the camera and say why I "voted" for Pretty Fly For a White Guy by the Offspring, so that's me on TV! I had never been to NY but I loved it, so I'm probably going to try to get back there again for the Christmas tree lighting when Jewel performs...anyone else going? One more thing---I want to give a thanks to MrBB for getting all of this MTV info to the list...without him I would have never known about it and I wouldn't have gotten to see one of my greatest inspirations (Jewel duh:) Take care, Nicole ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 10:56:51 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: 4 things about TRL One of the first questions, if not THE first, that Carson asked Jewel was the *exact* same question *I* asked her on the FANCAST Monday night...one she actually answered as well...the question was how she came up with the name "Spirit" for her new CD. Her answers were similar of course, but not quite the same...so I'm thinking there's many reasons why she chose that name...I bet she could write a couple pages on the topic. So thanks Carson, for stealing my question! (ha ha) Next, did anyone else notice that when they came back from I believe the first commercial break, when Carson mentioned to Jewel something about what song the band was playing, she said "that's Hand's, you should know that Carson..." or something to that effect. Actually it WASN'T Hands at all! Did anyone catch this??? They were playing the background music for Down So Long, like the main chords and stuff. They did it again later on too when they came back from another commercial. So Carson was right in not knowing the song, and JEWEL herself didn't even know what song it was!!!!! Can anyone else believe this? I find it hard to, only other than the fact she may have been slightly nervous and not paying much attention to the band. Anyway, I just found this to be very interesting. And last, as Matt's already said, I'd be willing to bet anything that "Down So Long" will definitely be her next single. No doubt. The bidding starts at $1,000...ha ha. They're using that song more than Hands now I think...for background/intro music type of things...plus she played that on SNL as well. And of course it's a good radio song, since it's one of the more full, heavier sounding songs on the CD. As for her 3rd single, I'm not sure yet. And, did any guys get to ask her in-studio questions? I don't remember...all I saw were girls...why? Doesn't seem right to me. The only EDA I saw and recognized was Eric AKA Crashboy...so "hi" Eric! You lucky dog. I had a feeling many NY EDA's would show up. One more thing...whose idea was it for her to throw out CD's??? She looked so uncomfortable doing that...could you imagine Whitney or Mariah doing that...ha! No way. So why Jewel? Just didn't seem right. Carson should have thrown them out I think. Anyway I have noticed how the list has changed even from when I was on, but I think that is bound to happen with growth. I do think there are more people who idolize Jewel now then there were before, but that is also due to growth. I don't think Jewel was weirded out by the fans who were outside yesterday, I think she was just like, "wow!". To her when she looked out at all those fans, I think she felt a resposibility to herself and them to guide them in the direction of inspiration rather than idolize. Just my thoughts. We do need to stop our criticism though, there is a fine line between opinion and criticism and I think we can find it if we try. Sorry this was so long. The new poster is awesome, but some of the other things seem like a littl bit of an odd choice, and little expensive. Like the tea sets and bags? I'm not dissing Jewel or anything, I'm just asking about the stuff, so I can know whether or not it'd be a cool thing to have. I was just wondering who went to JewelTV? Because I actually got in!! You don't know how happy I was! I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time! When Jewel was singing, see was literally at my feet! I wasn't actually on the list (I posted about how to get on the list a few days) but I went to NYC at 10 am and kept talking to anyone i could, and they put my name on the waiting, well, there wasn't a waiting list before, so I was on top :) So I went to the Virgin Megastore and bought Spirit, and when I was there Jesse came in! hehe He interviewed me, but it didn't get used, but it was still really cool. Then when I got back to MTV studios I was just hanging out there for like 4 hours or so... So while I was waiting I met Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Carson Daily. Then I got to be in a promo commercial! It was such a cool day! Then my ex boyfriend showed up with his new girlfriend, and we went and waited online to get into the studio. I asked the lady if she thought I'd be able to go up, and she said she didn't know. So I just waited for a while and then they finally said I could go up!! I was sooooo excited!! The whole time I was there I was just so happy! It was soooooooo awesome!! So, I just wanted to say that JEWEL ROCKS!!! :) Love you all, Sharon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 14:01:46 -0500 From: carolart@gnat.net Subject: Re: SJC the fan thing >Subject: SJC: the fan thing.. > >when you get crazy about it... Just remember, Jewel, and assorted others >are normal people, who are just sharing a gift they have... >Carrie I really liked how you put that Carrie! I've been a "fan" of Jewel since I heard "WWSYS" the first time and bought "POY". I loved how simple it seemed, just a woman and her guitar sharing her love of music and life with us. And btw I love "Spirit" equally as much!! One thing that I thought was so nice to hear her say on "Jewel TV" is that "these songs were not written because others would hear them but because they are things I think about in my life and care about the most". That's integrity and that's what I admire about her most! She inspires me to continue writing, playing guitar and to do random acts of kindness! Back when she was on Oprah, and I heard her say that she has to write every night and how she loves to write with a pen and not computer, that's exactly me. We see the world in a similar light so I think of her more as a "friend" I can identify with than anything like an "idol". Anyone else feel that way? So even though I was far from one of the first on this mailing list, I am a long time admirer of Jewel. I don't believe the fact that I didn't have access to the internet, all the rare recordings, etc unitl this year should make me less of a fan. Hey,congrats to all of you lucky ones who met her yesterday! PeaceToYouAll, Carol ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #629 ***************************
