I think that's right. Also Jewel talked about 'Don't' which you also mentioned. She said that it wasn't about a true experience because she was only 16 at the time she wrote it and didn't really have any experiences by that time. Hope this helps to clarify your questions. I thought "Don't" was one of the few true stories turned into a Jewel has said in concert (several times) that "Fat Boy" is based on a true story, some might confuse this with "Adrian" which she has said was not based on any Adrian. I'm not sure about "Don't", but _its_ certainly true on a more universal level. :-) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 12:11:26 WST From: "Shanda-Fleur Lane" Subject: Re: Jewel's webcast Just reembered that I was going to ask about the poem in my last emial. I didn't get to see the fancast cause I was out, wish I could have made a tape :) So I was wondering if someone could mabey drop me a note and basically just tell me how it went and perhaps tell me some of the more original questions she was asked and how she replied. This may be really hopeful but did anyone make a transcript? I hope it gets put up on Jewel's website! Also, I was just wondering if anyone knows if Jewel will be writing us anymore letters? Will those be posted to the whole world on the website too? :( I have to say, I was kinda expecting a letter by now since the release of "Spirit" is quite a milestone in her career. Also, everyone have a good time who's going to the totaly request live tommorrow. I wish I could be there! I won't even get to watch it because I live in Canada. Stupid, freezing cold country. :( Greg ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 04:39:56 GMT From: MADwand@earthling.net (MADwand) Subject: Re: Webcast On Tue, 17 Nov 1998 03:10:35 +0100, Jesse Houwing wrote: ::I really loved the webcast!!! In addition to being 50 minutes late starting, it was prerecorded questions and most likely prerecorded answers. It totally sucked. You had to feel like a complete loser sitting there expecting to really be able to see Jewel interacting with us, since all you really saw was Q&A flashing past while everybody complained about it being so fake. What a completely total disappointment, I sat around waiting all that time for nothing, missing cool stuff on TV, and she never really showed up. man, I'm bummed on this. and to top it off, today was sposed to be her appearance on the Rosie show, and they had Hanson on instead, what gives??? damn... Okay, I thought Jewel's mom sings with her on Hands and yet she wasn't on SNL. also, did I mention that I wished that Jewel's hair would've been the same as in the video? Well, I do!!!!! Another thing, I Mentioned that there's this show on the radio and they have short clips of Jewel interviewed, well, they show it every Sundays. But that's not why I'm writing. I'm writing to clear up that I said it was called "women in rock" well, it's called "Todays women" it's a very cool show. I record the stuff about Jewel so if, like I said, anyone wants to have a copy to put on the Internet for everyone else to hear, let me know. Now, the chat thing was GREAT from where I seen it. I seen it on the real video player. Of course I didn't get a question through but it was worth a short. I can't believe she sang "Absence of fear" that's one of my fav. songs!!!!! Okay, I have to go now. Talk to you all later. {\O/} /_\ Diana an EDA FOREVER!! Well, I think it would be a good idea to get a lot of different submissions, then I will hold a vote. The one that wins, is the official embleme. I will set some basic rules. * Must be under 5K * Can be animated or static * Send all submissions to codyrush@crsites.com * must have the acronym EDA in it. if there are any more rules you think should be added (or the above should be changed), e-mail me. I will make a *really* simple web site for everything at http://www.crsites.com/eda/index.html It will have rules and what have been submitted. Hope you help out. Visit it, to see the progress. I will announce when the vote will be held. Cody Rush The San Diego Angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 16:19:51 +1100 (EDT) From: blh301@coombs.anu.edu.au (Barry Howarth) Subject: Jewel and Plotinus Hi Angels, I was fascinated that Jewel would quote Plotinus in the booklet accompanying "Spirit". It helps make some of her views clearer for me, or at least I can now see where some of them may have come from. When I was in my early twenties I was very interested in mysticism and Plotinus is a major figure, though, I would say a godless, intellectual mystic. I had largely forgotten about him as my interests followed other paths and I would not have connected her with him but for the quote, which is, as all of you who now have "Spirit" will know: "We are not separate from Spirit, we are in it". The major ideas of Plotinus that I can now see in Jewel are the concept of the One, the Ultimate Reality, the Good and its emanations the Spirit or Intellect (Greek "nous") and the Soul being immanent in the everyday life of the senses (hence Jewel's quotation) and that the life of the senses is not irretrievably evil/sinful as Christian doctrine holds (the Fall and Original Sin); it is beautiful and good but imperfect (only the One is perfect). Though Plotinus, according to his biographer, Porphyry, "seemed ashamed to have a body". Jewel is certainly not that, and that is where I would see a major difference between her and people like Plotinus who see body and soul/mind as separate and even antagonistic, whereas, to me (I can't speak for Jewel), they are indivisible.
